Book Artifacts Illuminations

Download or read book Artifacts Illuminations written by Tom Lynch and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loren Eiseley (1907?77) is one of the most important American nature writers of the twentieth century and an admired practitioner of creative nonfiction. A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, Eiseley was a professor of anthropology and a prolific writer and poet who worked to bring an understanding of science to the general public, incorporating religion, philosophy, and science into his explorations of the human mind and the passage of time. As a writer who bridged the sciences and the humanities, Eiseley is a challenge for scholars locked into rigid disciplinary boundaries. Artifacts and Illuminations, the first full-length collection of critical essays on the writing of Eiseley, situates his work in the genres of creative nonfiction and nature writing. The contributing scholars apply a variety of critical approaches, including ecocriticism and place-oriented studies ranging across prairie, urban, and international contexts. Contributors explore such diverse topics as Eiseley?s use of anthropomorphism and Jungian concepts and examine how his work was informed by synecdoche. Long overdue, this collection demonstrates Eiseley?s continuing relevance as both a skilled literary craftsman and a profound thinker about the human place in the natural world.

Book A Primer of the Art of Illumination for the Use of Beginners

Download or read book A Primer of the Art of Illumination for the Use of Beginners written by Freeman Delamotte and published by . This book was released on 1860 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic manual on medieval illumination providing both a historical overview and practical how-to guide. The book is divided into two parts, "the first dealing with the history, definition, and characteristics of illumination, with particular reference to manuscripts owned by the British Museum, and the second providing practical directions on how to illuminate manuscripts, an overview of colors and how to make them, and an array of handy "tricks" detailing the many different techniques one could use to make modern manuscripts look more authentic. Freeman also included individual tables listing the dates, titles, interesting points, and museum locations of manuscripts from England, France, Italy, Germany, and the Near East to help his readers find for themselves actual examples on public display at the British Museum that could be used as historical and technical references in comparison to their own artistic efforts--even going so far as to point out that, despite popular belief to the contrary, female enthusiasts were also welcome at the British Museum, pointing out in the text's final note that "there are seats specially set apart for ladies" in the Museum's reading room"--An online description, "Delamotte's 1860 Primer of the Art of Illumination" by the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library of The Ohio State University

Book excerpt: A long-overdue publication that restores Wilfred to the art-historical canon Lumia presents a long-overdue reevaluation of the groundbreaking artist Thomas Wilfred (1889-1968), whose unprecedented works prefigured light art in America. As early as 1919, many years before the advent of consumer television and video technology, Wilfred began experimenting with light as his primary artistic medium, developing the means to control and project unique compositions of colorful, undulating light forms, which he referred to collectively as lumia. Manifested as both live performances on a cinematic scale and self-contained structures, Wilfred's innovative displays captivated audiences and influenced generations of artists to come. This publication, the first dedicated to Wilfred in over forty years, draws on the artist's personal archives and includes a number of insightful essays that trace the development of his work and its relation to his cultural milieu. Featuring a foreword by the celebrated artist James Turrell, Lumia helps to secure Wilfred's rightful place within the canon of modern art.
