Book The Empire State of the South

Download or read book The Empire State of the South written by Christopher C. Meyers and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Empire State of the South: Georgia History in Documents and Essays offers teachers of Georgia history an alternative to the traditional narrative textbook. In this volume, students have the opportunity to read Georgia history rather than reading about Georgia history. Encompassing the entirety of Georgia history into the twenty-first century, The Empire State of the South is suitable for all courses on Georgia history. The text is divided into sixteen chapters comprising 129 documents and thirty-three essays on various topics of Georgia history. Each chapter consists of several parts. First is a short narrative introduction. The second part contains the documents themselves. Following the documents are two essays written by historians regarding some topic relevant to the chapter. At the end of each chapter is a short list of suggested readings. The documents themselves range from the usual: state constitutions, laws, and speeches, to the inordinate: plans for constructing what is regarded as the state's first concrete home, a corny campaign song for Eugene Talmadge, an attempt by the General Assembly in 1897 to ban the playing of football, and a 1962 letter Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote from an Albany prison that preceded his better-known Birmingham letter. Georgia has indeed had a colorful history and The Empire State of the South tells that story. Book jacket.

This book was released on 2015-11-12 with total page 2024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easily accessible resource that showcases the links between using documented primary sources and gaining a more nuanced understanding of military history. Primary source analysis is a valuable tool that teaches students how historians utilize documents and interpret evidence from the past. This four-volume reference traces key decisions in U.S. military history—from the Revolutionary War through the 21st-century conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq—by examining documents relating to military strategy and national policy judgments by U.S. military and political leaders. A comprehensive introductory essay provides readers with the context necessary to understand the relationship between diplomatic documents, military correspondence, and other documentation related to events that shaped warfare, diplomacy, and military strategy. Once the stage is set, the work covers 14 conflicts that are significant to U.S. history. Treatment of each of the conflicts begins with a historical overview followed by a chronology and approximately 30 primary source documents presented in chronological order. Each document is accompanied by a description and annotations and by an analysis that highlights its importance to the event or topic under discussion. Designed for secondary school and college students, the work will be exceptionally valuable to teachers who will appreciate the ready-made lessons that fit directly into core curriculum standards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: August 1813 - The Red Sticks, under the encouragement of England and Spain, have attacked peaceful Fort Mims. Hundreds are killed: men, women, children, and babies. Only eighteen people escape. Secretary of War John Armstrong calls for an all out war against the Red Stick nation. Major General Andrew Jackson has been placed in overall command of the forces sent to end the Indian problem. But President Madison knows Jackson can be a loose cannon. He needs someone he can trust to be a controlling force: Jonah Lee. Fresh from the northwest campaign, Jonah and his adopted brother Moses have just gotten home to Georgia when the dispatch arrives. Jonah is morose and grieving over the loss of his love to an Indian raiding party, so Moses feels this new assignment may be a balm for him. From the Battle at Horseshoe Bend to the burning of Washington, D.C., Jonah Lee and Moses answer the call of their nation. The Battle at Horseshoe Bend is the second novel in the War 1812 series by Michael Aye
