Book Protecting the Environment During Armed Conflict

Download or read book Protecting the Environment During Armed Conflict written by Elizabeth Mrema and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2009 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report inventories and analyses the range of international laws that protect the environment during armed conflict. With a view to identifying the current gaps and weaknesses in this system, the authors examine the relevant provisions within four bodies of international law - environmental humanitarian (IHL), international criminal law (ICL), international environmental law (IEL), and international human rights law (HRL). The report concludes with twelve concrete recommendations on ways to strengthen this legal framework and its enforcement. The Environment and Natural Resources are crucial for building and consolidating peace, it is urgent that their protection in times of armed conflict be strengthened. There can be no durable peace if the natural resources that sustain livelihoods are damaged or destroyed. This report provides a basis upon which Member States can draw upon to clarify, expand and enforce international law on environmental protection in times of war.

Download or read book Protecting the Polar Marine Environment written by Davor Vidas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-11-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we best protect the polar marine environment against pollution? Leading scholars on environmental law, the law of the sea, and Arctic and Antarctic affairs here examine this important question. To what extent do existing global instruments of environmental protection apply to the Arctic Ocean and the Southern Ocean? Can the arrangements adopted at regional, sub-regional and national levels provide adequate protection? This book examines and compares various levels of regulation in protecting the marine environment of the Arctic and Antarctic, with specific attention to land-based activities, radioactive waste dumping, and shipping in ice-covered waters. Developments since the establishment of the Arctic Council in 1996 and the entry into force of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty in 1998 are also discussed. This is a volume that will appeal to polar specialists and to all those interested in environmental law and policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue Planet Law is the global and future-oriented environmental law that is necessary to face the global environmental crisis in the Anthropocene, assuming especially the link between climate action (SDG 13) and ocean sustainability (SDG 14). This open access book focuses on means of overcoming global environmental problems such as climate change, ocean degradation and biodiversity loss and the consequent risks for human life, health, food and wellbeing. It explores how environmental law, at the international, European and national levels, might set economic and technological development on a more sustainable path. Law must engage in dialogue with other areas such as philosophy, economics, ecology, and biology. This book highlights protection of the climate and the oceans and sustainable use of natural resources, through new policies, economies and technologies, including biotechnology, with a view to the preservation of life, health, food and a healthy environment for the present and future generations. The book may be seen as a contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 13 and 14 and a tribute to the Declaration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, also known as the Stockholm Conference (1972), on its 50th Anniversary.

Book Sustainability and Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : Volker Mauerhofer
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2020-07-07
  • ISBN : 3030426300
  • Pages : 756 pages

Download or read book Sustainability and Law written by Volker Mauerhofer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses sustainability and law in a multifaceted way. Together, sustainability and law are an emerging challenge for research and science. This volume contributes through an interdisciplinary concept to its further exploration. The contributions explore this exciting domain with innovative ideas and replicable approaches. It combines a variety of authors, from both the public and the private sectors, and thereby guarantees a broad view that enshrines the more theoretical arguments from the academic side as well as stronger practical applicable perspectives. The book provides space for thoughtful expansions of established theories as well as the hopeful emergence of innovative ideas. Moreover, the combination of three to five contributions into the eleven parts respectively aims toward a compression of like minded thoughts. This should lead to an intensification of exchange of viewpoints from different angles on a similar theme. Readers therefore also have the opportunity to concentrate on single chapters, but receive comprised knowledge and a variety of thoughts for new ideas on a particular theme.

Book Greening the Civil Codes Comparative Private Law and Environmental Protection

Download or read book Greening the Civil Codes Comparative Private Law and Environmental Protection written by Sabrina Lanni and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the greening of civil codes from a comparative perspective. It takes into account the increasing requirements of supranational rules, which favour measures to reduce global warming and its negative environmental impacts; it discusses the necessity to expand distributive justice given the current ecological emergency; and it reflects on which private law legal tools potentially may be employed to defend nature’s interests. The work fills a gap in the growing literature on developing rights of nature and ecosystem in transnational law. While the focus is on the environmental issues pertaining to the new civil codes and new projects of civil codes, the book promotes interdisciplinary research applicable to a range of environmental and natural resources–focused courses across the social sciences, especially those related to comparative law systems, legal anthropology, legal traditions in the world, political science and international relations.

Book A diagnostic tool for implementing an ecosystem approach to fisheries through policy and legal frameworks

Download or read book A diagnostic tool for implementing an ecosystem approach to fisheries through policy and legal frameworks written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The implementation of an ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) contributes to sustainable fisheries in various ways. One of them is by reviewing national policy and legal instruments to identify gaps which prevent a country from progressing towards full alignment with, and implementation of, an EAF. This diagnostic tool builds on the previous work of FAO by translating the 17 EAF components identified in the How-to Guide on legislating for an EAF into an EAF Legal Checklist for legal practitioners, policymakers and fisheries managers to use in conducting a preliminary assessment of selected policy and legal instruments and determining whether they are congruent an EAF. The outcomes of the assessment may result in decisions to amend existing national policies and/or legislation, or develop new policy and legal instruments that are aligned with the 17 EAF components, to ensure the full implementation of an EAF towards improving, in a holistic way, the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources, biodiversity and ecosystems.
