Book The Encyclopedia of American Catholic History

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of American Catholic History written by Michael Glazier and published by Michael Glazier Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 1590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The encyclopedia lists essential data on all Catholic colleges and universities and on all religious institutions of men and women, but it was not feasible to have a separate entry on each. Therefore, a representative selection was made and articles were written on some of the larger and smaller colleges and universities; and the same procedure was adopted with the religious orders and congregations. Unfortunately, space did not permit the inclusion of every important person or event in American Catholic history"--Introduction.

Download or read book American Crusade written by Benjamin J. Wetzel and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When is a war a holy crusade? And when does theology cause Christians to condemn violence? In American Crusade, Benjamin Wetzel argues that the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I shared a cultural meaning for white Protestant ministers in the United States, who considered each conflict to be a modern-day crusade. American Crusade examines the "holy war" mentality prevalent between 1860 and 1920, juxtaposing mainline Protestant support for these wars with more hesitant religious voices: Catholics, German-speaking Lutherans, and African American Methodists. The specific theologies and social locations of these more marginal denominations made their ministries highly critical of the crusading mentality. Religious understandings of the nation, both in support of and opposed to armed conflict, played a major role in such ideological contestation. Wetzel's book questions traditional periodizations and suggests that these three wars should be understood as a unit. Grappling with the views of America's religious leaders, supplemented by those of ordinary people, American Crusade provides a fresh way of understanding the three major American wars of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book American Churches and the First World War

Download or read book American Churches and the First World War written by Gordon L. Heath and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centenary of America's declaration of war in 1917 is a fitting time to examine afresh the reaction of the American churches to the conflict. Commenting on themes such as nationalism, nativism, nation-building, dissent, just war, and pacifism, this book provides a window into those perilous times from the viewpoint of Mainline and Evangelical Protestants, Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Pentecostals, Mennonites, Quakers, Mormons, and Jehovah's Witnesses. Also included are chapters on developments among American military chaplains in the First World War and the reaction of the American churches to the Armenian Genocide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive encyclopedia details the close ties between the German-speaking world and the Americas, examining the extensive Germanic cultural and political legacy in the nations of the New World and the equally substantial influence of the Americas on the Germanic nations. From the medical discoveries of Dr. Johann Siegert, surgeon general to Simon Bolivar, to the amazing explorations of the early-19th-century German explorer Alexander von Humboldt, whose South American and Caribbean travels made him one of the most celebrated men in Europe, Germany and the Americas examines both the profound Germanic cultural and political legacy throughout the Americas and the lasting influence of American culture on the German-speaking world. Ever since Baron von Steuben helped create George Washington's army, German Americans have exhibited decisive leadership not only in the military, but also in politics, the arts, and business. Germany and the Americas charts the lasting links between the Germanic world and the nations of the Americas in a comprehensive survey featuring a chronology of key events spanning 400 years of transatlantic history.
