Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Arthur's History of England Though I have not the happiness to be a mother, my love of children has led me to think a good deal about them. Their amusements, and their lessons. This little history was written for a real little arthur, and I have endeavoured to write it nearly as I would tell it to an intelligent child. I well remember what I wanted to be told myself, in addition to what I found in my lesson-book, when I was first allowed to read the History of England, and I hope I have answered most of the questions I recollect to have wished to ask. I may have failed in satisfying the almost bound less inquiries of intelligent children; and I could wish that the mother or governess, who may put this little book into the hands of her pupils, would read each chapter herself before she gives it to a child, that she may be ready with answers to such questions as the chapter may suggest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Arthur in History and Legend Clear and summary a form as possible, the origin and growth of King Arthur's historical and literary renown, and follows, largely, the lines of a chapter contributed by me to the first volume of The Cambridge History of English Literature. Although I have had, necessarily, to refer to much literary matter which is purely mythological, I have not sought to give any account of the specula tions of those who in our own time have endeavoured to reconstruct and interpret the myths and beliefs of pre-historic Celtic heathendom. Nor have I made more than the briefest allusion to the subsidiary legends which, mainly through the agency of French romantic scribes, came to be associated with Arthur's name, and 'to be included in the matter of Britain as it emerged out of the age of high romance. The book deals, all but exclusively, with King Arthur himself, as he is known to chroniclers, romancers and poets. Book King Arthur and His Knights

Download or read book King Arthur and His Knights written by Jessie Laidlay Weston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Arthur and His Knights: A Survey of Arthurian Romance The. Evolution of Arthur as a national hero, indeed, is a very curious and striking example of the unconquerable vitality and power of impressing itself characteristic of the Celtic genius. We reject, and very reasonably, the tradition which represents the British King as carrying his arms triumphantly through France and Italy, and Van (pushing even the power of Rome; but what the historical Arthur did not do, the legendary Arthur assuredly achieved. Not only did the English people (representative of the Saxon, Danish, and Norman invaders of British soil) take him to their heart, and as they became welded into one folk accept him as the traditionary embodiment of the spirit of their land, but he took captive the imagin ation alike of France and of Italy. He is immer talised in French verse and in Italian architecture; Sicily claims to be his resting-place; and there is no European literature of any importance which does not contribute its quota to the great mass of Arthurian romance. Yet a comparatively small proportion only of this literature is in the English tongue. When the Arthurian legend was at the height of its popularity the dominant language was French, and it was in the form of French romance that the literary legend became popularised in this land. Book The Death of King Arthur

Download or read book The Death of King Arthur written by Thomas Malory and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed biographer Peter Ackroyd vibrantly resurrects the legendary epic of Camelot in this modern adaptation. The names of Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, Guinevere, Galahad, the sword of Excalibur, and the court of Camelot are as recognizable as any from the world of myth. Although many versions exist of the stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Le Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory endures as the most moving and richly inventive. In this abridged retelling the inimitable Peter Ackroyd transforms Malory's fifteenth-century work into a dramatic modern story, vividly bringing to life a world of courage and chivalry, magic, and majesty. The golden age of Camelot, the perilous search for the Holy Grail, the love of Guinevere and Lancelot, and the treachery of Arthur's son Mordred are all rendered into contemporary prose with Ackroyd's characteristic charm and panache. Just as he did with his fresh new version of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, Ackroyd now brings one of the cornerstones of English literature to a whole new audience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arthur: A Short Sketch of His Life and History, in English Verse, of the First Half of the Fifteenth Century As one of the chief objects of the Early English d104 Society is to print every Early English d104 relating to Arthur, the Committee have decided that this short sketch of the British hero's life shall form one of the first issue of the Society's pub lications. The six hundred and forty-two English lines here printed occur in an incomplete Latin Chronicle of the Kings of Britain, an abbreviation of the Brut, bound up with many other valuable pieces in the Liber Rubens Bat/comm, 1428 a.d.,1 belonging to the Marquis of Bath. The old chronicler has dealt with Uther Pendragon, and is narrating Arthur's deeds, - telling of the siege of Bath, of Brounsteefl (excalibur) caliburm', gladii Arthuri, ' of the conquest of Scotland, Ireland, Gothland, and the founding of the Rotunda Tabula, made round that none should be above, none below, but all sit equal when, as if feeling that Latin prose was no fit vehicle for telling of Arthur, king of men, he breaks out into English verse.
