Book excerpt: Henri Peyre, dean of French scholars in the United States, introduces "The Two Faces of Ionesco" thus: "Rosette Lamont, the shrewdest and most perceptive interpreter of Ioensco in Europe and America, and Melvin Friedman, known in France for his" Confirguation Critique de Samuel Beckett," which was published by The University of Chicago Press as "Samuel Beckett Now," have ingeniously gathered here a series of chapters by diverse hands which illuminate all the conflicting aspects of that enigmatic personality. Their introduction, and Professor Lamont's own essays in this volume, brilliantly written, unravel the thought, the technique and the complexities of Ionesco's work.

Book Discourse as Performance

Download or read book Discourse as Performance written by Michael Issacharoff and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first books to apply contemporary linguistic and semiotic research to drama, Discourse as Performance is an investigation into theatrical discourse - the specifically theatrical use of language in the broadest sense, from verbal utterance to non verbal uses comprising the visual elements of gesture, facial expression, movement, costume, players' bodies, properties, and decor. The book is in three parts. In the first part, the author deals with theatrical discourse proper and distinguishes between its two main modes: dialogue and stage directions. Both modes address the problem of the specificity of theatrical discourse in contrast to other types of discourse, both literary and non-literary. The dialogue raises the questions of who speaks in a play (author, characters, actors) and to whom; the stage directions raise the question of reading a play, as opposed to seeing it performed onstage. The author links these issues to speech act theory and intertextuality.

Book excerpt: Demastes draws a distinction between the genus realism and its central species, naturalism. He studies, from an historical perspective, the growth of realism into the foremost aesthetic form in 20th century theater, and focuses on American playwrights who have used realism to challenge outdated and essentially naturalist thought, thereby infusing realism with fresh and contemporary perspectives of the world around them. Demastes analyzes the unique contributions of David Rabe, David Mamet, Sam Shepard, Charles Fuller, Beth Henley, and Marsha Norman, and assesses their overall critical reception. Book Their Place on the Stage

Download or read book Their Place on the Stage written by Eliz Brown Guillory and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-03-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of black American women playwrights. It will be useful to scholars in the fields of black and women's literature and an excellent source of background reading in graduate and undergraduate courses on American women playwrights. The author's training as both a scholar and a playwright is evident in this book. Choice This important contribution to African American and women's studies analyzes the dramatic works of America's black women playwrights. The plays of such writers as Alice Childress, Lorraine Hansberry, and Ntozake Shange are examined in light of the tradition from which they emerged. Brown-Guillory begins by tracing the development of African American theater with its roots in African theatrics, then moves on to discuss women playwrights of the Harlem Renaissance such as Angelina Weld Grimke, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Georgia Douglas Johnson, May Miller, Mary Burrill, Myrtle Smith Livingston, Ruth Gaines-Shelton, Eulalie Spence, and Marita Bonner. Though rarely anthologized and infrequently made the subject of critical interpretation, asserts the author, the plays of these early twentieth-century black women offer much to the American theater in the way of content, tonal and structural form, characterization, as well as dialogue, and were instrumental in paving a way for black playwrights from the 1950s to the present.

Download or read book A Collier s Friday Night written by D. H. Lawrence and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not a lot happens in D H Lawrence's 'A Collier's Friday Night' which is one of its chief glories. Eschewing the neat plot-turns and engineered debates of the writers he called the 'rule and measure mathematical folk' (Shaw, Galsworthy, Barker), the 24-year-old Lawrence effectively threw away the rulebook, and created out of the habitual Friday night activities of a miner's family (counting out the pay, courting, baking bread, etc) a lovely sense of the inconsequential drift of ordinary experience.
