Book Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis

Download or read book Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis written by Jim Johnson (Physical therapist) and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're looking down at your arthritic knee and seeing only a worn-out joint with eroding cartilage, you're thinking about your knee the wrong way. There are two problems with this line of thinking. First of all, the structural changes that commonly take place in arthritis, things such as cartilage loss, meniscus tears, and bone spurs, can all be found in people with no knee pain. Consider the study that looked at 319 subjects between the ages of 25 and 74 with knee arthritis on x-ray - and found that only 47% had knee pain. Put another way, 53% of these people were walking around with knee arthritis and no pain. Yet another study looked at 49 subjects over the age of 45 with no knee pain or arthritis, and found that 76% of them had meniscus tears The second problem with focusing on the structural changes in knee arthritis is trying to figure out what's causing your pain. Most of the numerous structures in your knee have nerve pain fibers going to them, so good luck trying to pinpoint which one(s) are the exact source of your pain. In fact, about the only knee structure we can safely rule out is the articular cartilage that can be seen wearing out on x-rays Knee cartilage itself actually has no pain fibers going to it, and therefore cannot produce any pain. So what now? Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis takes a new approach to an old problem. Instead of worrying about structural problems (that studies show people can live just fine with) you will learn how to fix the functional problems found in knees with arthritis. And as the research shows again and again, if you improve functions such as the strength and proprioception of your knee, the pain goes away. Based entirely on randomized controlled trials, Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis is a simple, yet effective program that can be done in the privacy of your home with minimal cost or equipment. Exercise sheets are also provided to help guide you step-by-step through a six-week program.

Book Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment

Download or read book Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-07-12 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide disability benefits: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. SSDI provides disability benefits to people (under the full retirement age) who are no longer able to work because of a disabling medical condition. SSI provides income assistance for disabled, blind, and aged people who have limited income and resources regardless of their prior participation in the labor force. Both programs share a common disability determination process administered by SSA and state agencies as well as a common definition of disability for adults: "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." Disabled workers might receive either SSDI benefits or SSI payments, or both, depending on their recent work history and current income and assets. Disabled workers might also receive benefits from other public programs such as workers' compensation, which insures against work-related illness or injuries occurring on the job, but those other programs have their own definitions and eligibility criteria. Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment identifies and defines the professionally accepted, standard measurements of outcomes improvement for medical conditions. This report also identifies specific, long-lasting medical conditions for adults in the categories of mental health disorders, cancers, and musculoskeletal disorders. Specifically, these conditions are disabling for a length of time, but typically don't result in permanently disabling limitations; are responsive to treatment; and after a specific length of time of treatment, improve to the point at which the conditions are no longer disabling.

"Many People have come to me over the years having no understanding of their knee arthritic problems," writes Dr. David Morley, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. "They fail prey to clinicians who often prescribe aggressive, costly, and sometimes dangerous therapeutic options, including knee replacement." And no one-man or woman, young or old, overweight or thin-is immune from knee pain. "If your job involves performing the same joint-stressing motions over and over," he points out, "or carrying weight, or both, you are also a candidate." He writes from his decades-long experience and professional knowledge, using a reader-friendly, often humorous style that makes his information particularly accessible and understandable for readers. In part, he contrasts a healthy knee to an arthritic knee, including noting the signs and symptoms that many of us tend to dismiss, and he offers scientific facts to educate us on treatment. His purpose is to help avoid knee arthritis, if possible, or to treat it conservatively when it is present-and for those who think surgery is the only option, Dr. Morley stresses, "The great majority of patients will show improvement with a non-operative approach." The Mechanics of the Knee is for anyone with knee pain, those who have risk factors for knee arthritis, or those who wish to learn more about the disease. It is, quite simply, the definitive book on knee arthritis. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: More than 20 years have passed since the International Symposium on Total Knee Replacement was held in London in 1974. Prosthetic design and operative technique have been greatly improved since then, and there is now an accepted standard concept of total knee arthroplasty. Thirteen years after the London symposium, another international symposium on total knee replacement was held, this time in Nagoya, Japan, in 1987. Its ambitious objective was to push forward the frontiers of continuous investigation and improve ment of total knee replacement. The fruits of the individual efforts presented at the Nagoya symposium were published in a volume of proceedings entitled Total Knee Replacement. In the years since 1987, further investigations have been conducted in various parts of the world regarding prosthetic design, fixation, long-term radiological follow-up, biomechanical evaluation, and biomaterials research. In knee ligament reconstruc tion, rapid progress has been made in the past five years in clinical practice and fundamental research by means of arthroscopic surgery and tissue transplantation, and we have come close to establishing a standard treatment. Under these circumstances, an international symposium on knee joint reconstruc tion was planned for 1994, again to be held in Nagoya, to provide ample opportunity for exchanging information and sharing clinical experience from around the world.
