Download or read book Grimoires written by Owen Davies and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a grimoire? The word has a familiar ring to many people, particularly as a consequence of such popular television dramas as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. But few people are sure exactly what it means. Put simply, grimoires are books of spells that were first recorded in the Ancient Middle East and which have developed and spread across much of the Western Hemisphere and beyond over the ensuing millennia. At their most benign, they contain charms and remedies for natural and supernatural ailments and advice on contacting spirits to help find treasures and protect from evil. But at their most sinister they provide instructions on how to manipulate people for corrupt purposes and, worst of all, to call up and make a pact with the Devil. Both types have proven remarkably resilient and adaptable and retain much of their relevance and fascination to this day. But the grimoire represents much more than just magic. To understand the history of grimoires is to understand the spread of Christianity, the development of early science, the cultural influence of the print revolution, the growth of literacy, the impact of colonialism, and the expansion of western cultures across the oceans. As this book richly demonstrates, the history of grimoires illuminates many of the most important developments in European history over the last two thousand years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cultural journey down memory lane showcases how major Western figures, events, and places have been portrayed in folk legends, art, literature, and popular culture. Ever since the days of the 49ers and George Armstrong Custer, the Old West has been America's most potent source of legend. But it is sometimes hard to separate fact from fiction. Did you know, for example, that Annie Oakley was a talented marksman who shot an estimated 40,000 rounds per year while practicing and performing for Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show in the late l800s? Or that many interpreters believe that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is not just a fairy tale, but also a Populist allegory? These are just two of the folk legends dissected and examined in this veritable cultural geography. The volume covers everything from billionaire Howard Hughes and composer Aaron Copeland to Aztlan (the legendary first city of the Aztecs) and Area 51, the top-secret U.S. Air Force base at Groom Lake, Nevada, that has fascinated UFO and conspiracy buffs.

Book The Language of Humor

Download or read book The Language of Humor written by Don L. F. Nilsen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of today's communication is carried out through various kinds of humor, and we therefore need to be able to understand its many aspects. Here, two of the world's leading pioneers in humor studies, Alleen and Don Nilsen, explore how humor can be explained across the numerous sub-disciplines of linguistics. Drawing on examples from language play and jokes in a range of real-life contexts, such as art, business, marketing, comedy, creative writing, science, journalism and politics, the authors use their own theory of 'Features, functions and subjects of Humor' to analyze humor across all disciplines. Each highly accessible chapter uses a rich array of examples to stimulate discussion and interaction even in large classes. Supplemental PowerPoints to accompany each of the 25 chapters are available online, taking many of the insights from the chapters for further interactional discussions with students.

Book Dictator s Dreamscape

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph R. Hartman
  • Publisher : University of Pittsburgh Press
  • Release : 2019-04-23
  • ISBN : 0822986493
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book Dictator s Dreamscape written by Joseph R. Hartman and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Hartman focuses on the public works campaign of Cuban president, and later dictator, Gerardo Machado. Political histories often condemn Machado as a US-puppet dictator, overthrown in a labor revolt and popular revolution in 1933. Architectural histories tend to catalogue his regime’s public works as derivatives of US and European models. Dictator’s Dreamscape reassesses the regime’s public works program as a highly nuanced visual project embedded in centuries-old representations of Cuba alongside wider debates on the nature of art and architecture in general, especially in regards to globalization and the spread of US-style consumerism. The cultural production overseen by Machado gives a fresh and greatly broadened perspective on his regime’s accomplishments, failures, and crimes. The book addresses the regime’s architectural program as a visual and architectonic response to debates over Cuban national identity, US imperialism, and Machado’s own cult of personality.

Book The Story of American Literature

Download or read book The Story of American Literature written by Ludwig Lewisohn and published by Greenslet Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE STORY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE BY LUDWIG LEWISOHN THE MODERN LIBRARY NEW YORK LUDWIG LEWISOHN 1883- A NOTE ON THE AUTHOR OF The Story of American Literature No history of American criticism can ignore the contributions of Ludwig Lewisohn. Over a period embracing the World War and its long after math, his writings have given a new impetus and scope to the evaluation of American literature. Always enlightened and just, realistic and sensi tive, Mr. Lewisohns books are all devoted to a search of essences in personality and ideas. He is equally the creator and critic. His work is both adventurous and solidly rooted in tradition, wide in its range and sure in its discrimination. Born in Berlin in 1883, Ludwig Lewisohn was brought to America when he was seven years old. He received a wholly American education, at first at the College of Charleston, South Carolina, and later at Colum bia, University. As a teacher, at the University of Wisconsin and Ohio State University, 1910-1918, he exercised a strong literary influence over his students. From the academic world he moved into the more exciting field of journalism and then became drama critic on the staff of The Nation, 1918-1924. For a number of years he lived in Europe and repeatedly visited Palestine and North Africa. He is the author of twenty-five volumes, embracing criticism, biography and fiction. His critical works include The Modern Drama, The Creative Life, The Drama and the Stage, Cities and Men, The Story of American Literature, of which the last named, here amplified and reprinted, is undoubtedly the culmination. Among his novels, those that have become integral parts of modern literature, not only at home but in translation in countries as diverse as Sweden and France, are The Case of Mr. Crump, The Island Within, Stephen Escott, The Last Days of Shylock, The Golden Vase, Trumpet of ubilee. The same may be said of his two autobiographical volumes, Up Stream and Mid-Channel. For many years now he has given a great part of his time and strength to the service of the Zionist cause. He resides in New Rochelle, New York, with his wife, Thelma Spear Lewisohn, the concert singer, and their son. Every history and every history of literature becomes a jrag went immediately upon completion Action and creation continue on their march the book n static. Hence for this Modern Library Giant edition of The Story of American Literature have written a postscript, bringing, as best I could, the matter up to date. Tht book is now, at least, less fragmentary than it was before. It may indeed, whatever its shortcomings, be said to complete the record of an epoch fast drawing to its close.
