Este primer volumen de Historia de la pintura y la escultura del siglo xx en España estudia el período comprendido entre los años 1900 y 1940, en la hipótesis de que la Guerra Civil constituye un punto de ruptura y su desenlace inicia una época diferente. El relato tiene en cuenta la trayectoria del arte en la búsqueda de una modernidad que solo ocasionalmente se alcanza, de forma más clara y rotunda, fuera del país, en la obra de Picasso, Joan Miró y Julio González, también en la de aquellos artistas que componen la llamada Escuela española en París.
