Book excerpt: "It deals witb a distinguished career which led the Colombian artist from her early stage of "windows" and "doors" to a series of "atmospheres"--In which she seems to leap through the frames of her earlier paintings to find herself before the light that is on the other side and was merely hinted at before. The white canvases of her "atmospheres" - luminous, sparkling and full of matter - in turn fulfill their cycle, opening the way for a further stage which is marked by the recuperatian of the object and a new and fresh approach to nature.

Since his astonishing debut as a prodigy in the early 1940s, Grau has explored virtually every avenue of art: drawing, engraving, collage, silkscreen, woodcuts, painting, sculpture, theatrical costumes and sets, cinema, murals, frescos, and objects. In the course of his long career, Grau has achieved and consolidated a style that is personal and classical at the same time; he is unique in the panorama of Latin American art. This book pays homage to an artist as vital at the age of 83 as he was when the public first brought him acclaim over 60 years ago.

Book The Politics of Taste

  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book The Politics of Taste written by Ana María Reyes and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Politics of Taste Ana María Reyes examines the works of Colombian artist Beatriz González and Argentine-born art critic, Marta Traba, who championed González's art during Colombia's National Front coalition government (1958–74). During this critical period in Latin American art, artistic practice, art criticism, and institutional objectives came into strenuous yet productive tension. While González’s triumphant debut excited critics who wanted to cast Colombian art as modern, sophisticated, and universal, her turn to urban lowbrow culture proved deeply unsettling. Traba praised González's cursi (tacky) recycling aesthetic as daringly subversive and her strategic localism as resistant to U.S. cultural imperialism. Reyes reads González's and Traba's complex visual and textual production and their intertwined careers against Cold War modernization programs that were deeply embedded in the elite's fear of the masses and designed to avert Cuban-inspired revolution. In so doing, Reyes provides fresh insights into Colombia's social anxieties and frustrations while highlighting how interrogations of taste became vital expressions of the growing discontent with the Colombian state.

Book The art of gold the legacy of Pre Hispanic Colombia

Download or read book The art of gold the legacy of Pre Hispanic Colombia written by Juan Mayr and published by Skira. This book was released on 2007 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gold held a deep symbolic meaning for the pre-Hispanic cultures of present-day Colombia. Its color and brilliance made it analogous with the Sun and a powerful symbol of fertility. Its physical and chemical properties allowed for the creation of different textures and a variety of color tones that became part of the political and ritual functions of the objects produced. They manufactured simple objects used by ordinary members of the community, such as nose rings, earrings, breastplates, pendants and tools, as well as complex showy objects including body adornments, emblems of rank and power, and votive figures reserved for important figures such as governors, shaman and venerable elders. This richly illustrated volume traces the legacy of gold in pre-Hispanic Colombia in over 250 exceptional gold objects, supplemented by maps, diagrams, and illustrations that put in context the pieces that make up this extraordinary collection from the Gold Museum of Bogotà. The exceptional photographs are accompanied by brief descriptions of the cultures that created the objects, their customs, the territories they occupied, the techniques used and the symbolic value assigned to the different pieces.

Book Historia URGENTE del arte en Colombia

Download or read book Historia URGENTE del arte en Colombia written by Halim Badawi and published by Crítica Colombia. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Finding Caspicara

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susan Verdi Webster
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2024-10-01
  • ISBN : 1477329749
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Finding Caspicara written by Susan Verdi Webster and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of sculpture and authorship in eighteenth-century Quito that documents Caspicara as a participant in the innovative artistic production of the city’s workshops and its widespread commerce of polychrome sculptures. Who is Caspicara? Nothing is known of Caspicara’s life, and not a single sculpture has been documented as his work. Yet traditional histories laud him as a prolific Indigenous sculptor in eighteenth-century Quito who created exquisite polychrome figures and became a national artistic icon. Drawing on extensive archival, historical, and object research, Susan Verdi Webster peels away layers of historiographical fabrication to reveal what we do and do not know about Caspicara and his work. Rather than being a solitary master, Caspicara collaborated with other, largely Indigenous artists in Quito’s protoindustrial workshops, manufacturing sculptures now credited to him alone. The high quality of Quito sculptures produced by anonymous artists turned the city into a hub of wide-ranging commerce in religious icons. The art world and post-independence Ecuadorians have lionized the one named sculptor, Caspicara, according to the Western model of the artist-genius, amplifying the market for works bearing his name and creating a national hero on par with European masters. Lost in this process were the artists themselves. Webster returns to their world, detailing their methods and labor and, for the first time, documenting a sculpture made by Caspicara.

Book Academies and Schools of Art in Latin America

Download or read book Academies and Schools of Art in Latin America written by Oscar E. Vázquez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume’s chief aim is to bring together, in an English-language source, the principal histories and narratives of some of the most significant academies and national schools of art in South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries. The book highlights not only issues shared by Latin American academies of art but also those that differentiate them from their European counterparts. Authors examine issues including statutes, the influence of workshops and guilds, the importance of patronage, discourses of race and ethnicity in visual pedagogy, and European models versus the quest for national schools. It also offers first-time English translations of many foundational documents from several significant academies and schools. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, Latin American and Hispanic studies, and modern visual cultures.
