Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully produced, comprehensive look at Cuban artist Zilia Sánchez that traces her alluring and evocative paintings and sculpture from the 1950s to today Cuban artist Zilia Sánchez (b. 1926) often says, “Soy isla” (“I am an island”), expressing her desire for solitary, uncompromising practice. It also serves as a metaphor for her experience as an islander—connected to and disconnected from both the mainland and mainstream art currents, such as concretism, gestural abstraction, and minimalism. Characterized by reductive forms, clean lines, and sensuous curves suggestive of the female body, Sánchez’s work frequently references protagonists from ancient mythology and lunar motifs while embracing ambiguity. This groundbreaking volume examines her paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and graphic illustrations together with archival ephemera. It traces Sánchez’s artistic journey from her early years in Cuba through her travels in Europe and residence in New York in the 1960s to her move to Puerto Rico, where she still lives and works. With spectacular illustrations of more than 75 artworks, insightful essays situating Sánchez within the context of global modernism, and a conversation with the artist, this is the most comprehensive publication on Sánchez’s art to date.

Download or read book Carmen Herrera written by Dana Miller and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Carl Andre written by Yasmil Raymond and published by Dia Art Foundation, New York. This book was released on 2014 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major retrospective catalogue on the career of minimalist sculptor and poet Carl Andre Carl Andre (b. 1935) redefined the parameters of abstract sculpture in the 1960s and 1970s. He was a highly influential voice in the American minimalist movement, recognized for his ordered linear and grid formats. In the early 1960s, Andre's creative focus shifted to writing poetry when he took a job as a freight brakeman and conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad. His poems echoed and extended the themes in his sculptural work, and his experience with the railroad significantly influenced his choice of materials in later years. In this stunning catalogue, which accompanies the first retrospective of Andre's work since 1970, the artist's legacy is examined in eleven essays by international scholars. The book presents a broad range of sculpture made over the past fifty years, including Andre's emblematic floor and corner pieces, highlighting his radical use of standardized units of industrial material such as timber planks, concrete blocks, and metal plates. A vast selection of Andre's previously unpublished concrete poems, together with letters, postcards, ephemera, and documentation of important installations, further complements our understanding of an essential figure in the history of contemporary art.

Download or read book Sculptural Materiality in the Age of Conceptualism written by MarinR. Sullivan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sculptural Materiality in the Age of Conceptualism is structured around four distinct but interrelated projects initially realized in Italy between 1966 and 1972: Yayoi Kusama?s Narcissus Garden, Michelangelo Pistoletto?s Newspaper Sphere (Sfera di giornali), Robert Smithson?s Asphalt Rundown, and Joseph Beuys?s Arena. These works all utilized non-traditional materials, collaborative patronage models, and alternative modes of display to create a spatially and temporally dispersed arena of matter and action, with photography serving as a connective, material thread within the sculpture it reflects. While created by major artists of the postwar period, these particular projects have yet to receive substantive art historical analysis, especially from a sculptural perspective. Here, they anchor a transnational narrative in which sculpture emerged as a node, a center of transaction comprising multiple material phenomenon, including objects, images, and actors. When seen as entangled, polymorphous entities, these works suggest that the charge of sculpture in the late postwar period came from its concurrent existence as both three-dimensional phenomena and photographic image, in the interchanges among the materials that continue to activate and alter the constitution of sculpture within the contemporary sphere.

Book excerpt: ArteKids board books show children the world of art through imaginative paintings, sculpture, photographs, and drawings, with text in English and Spanish. Outside Todo el Día! Nature in English y Español introduces children to the wonders of nature by connecting them to art in a unique, fun, and colorful way. Terms for outdoor concepts like sky/cielo, water/aqua, mountain/montaña, flora (tree/árbol and flower/flor), and fauna are represented by masterful artworks from around the world. The contrast of night (noche) and day (día) are shown through Latin American needlework and an Ansel Adams photograph.
