Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the finest examples of European craftsmanship are the clocks produced for the luxury trade in the eighteenth century. The J. Paul Getty Museum is fortunate to have in its decorative arts collection twenty clocks dating from around 1680 to 1798: eighteen produced in France and two in Germany. They demonstrate the extraordinary workmanship that went into both the design and execution of the cases and the intricate movements by which the clocks operated. In this handsome volume, each clock is pictured and discussed in detail, and each movement diagrammed and described. In addition, biographies of the clockmakers and enamelers are included, as are indexes of the names of the makers, previous owners, and locations.

Download or read book Treasures from the Oxus written by Massimo Vidale and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In history, this grand arterial 1500-mile waterway was always seen as the natural frontier between the northern provinces of the Iranian empires and the outer Turanian lands. It was for centuries central to Achaemenid and later Persian power. But, as the author shows, it has a prehistory which goes very much further back: and a succession of skilled yet still elusive Bronze Age cultures flourished here well before the rise of Cyrus the Great in the 6th century BCE. This richly illustrated book explores the fascinating history, art and archaeology of the region, including its primal trade in silk and foodstuffs; the mineral wealth of the Oxus basin; its exotic myths and beliefs; and the converging tribes and peoples which led to a new stability, economic growth and urbanism. The volume contains 150 full-colour photographs of notable artefacts, including silver decorated vessels, inlaid stone pots, agate beads and 25 'Bactrian Princesses': remarkable statuettes made in chlorite and limestone. Most of these rare objects have never been seen, let alone published, before.

Book Le Corbusier Pierre Jeanneret Restoration of the Clart Building Geneva

Download or read book Le Corbusier Pierre Jeanneret Restoration of the Clart Building Geneva written by Office du patrimoine et des sites and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the story of Clarté, Le Corbusier’s first apartment building, continuing the narrative into the 21st century. The steel skeleton building completed in Geneva in 1930/1932 is a prototype of the Moderne style and a precursor of the Unité d’Habitation. The building was neglected for many decades and not listed as a historic building until the 1990s. In 2007 the external envelope was repaired as the first step, followed by refurbishment of the interior, in which building preservation requirements were taken into account in an exemplary manner. The building log book by the architects and structural engineers is illustrated with numerous new and historic drawings and photographs, and has been supplemented with an account of the building’s history. The renovated building is presented in large photographs.

Book A Civil Society

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Smith Allen
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2022-05
  • ISBN : 9781496227782
  • Pages : 420 pages

Download or read book A Civil Society written by James Smith Allen and published by . This book was released on 2022-05 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Civil Society explores the struggle to initiate women as full participants in the masonic brotherhood that shared in the rise of France's civil society and its "civic morality" on behalf of women's rights. As a vital component of the third sector during France's modernization, freemasonry empowered women in complex social networks, contributing to a more liberal republic, a more open society, and a more engaged public culture. James Smith Allen shows that although women initially met with stiff resistance, their induction into the brotherhood was a significant step in the development of French civil society and its "civic morality," including the promotion of women's rights in the late nineteenth century. Pulling together the many gendered facets of masonry, Allen draws from periodicals, memoirs, and archival material to account for the rise of women within the masonic brotherhood in the context of rapid historical change. Thanks to women's social networks and their attendant social capital, masonry came to play a leading role in French civil society and the rethinking of gender relations in the public sphere.

Book excerpt: This monograph is the first to chart the entire career of Irish artist Conor Harrington, from the nascent graffiti of his teenage years to his status as an internationally recognised artist. Striking photography captures the visual evolution of a unique practice that has united the opulent ceremony of the baroque with the stark immediacy of graffiti. Equally celebrated for both his large-scale gallery work and vast outdoor pieces, the book is split into Indoor and Outdoor sections. Harrington's artistic journey takes in Ireland, the UK, the US, Norway, Spain, Poland, Brazil and even the Bethlehem Wall, and is supplemented by fascinating documentary photography alongside the artist's personal narrative. Jane Neal's newly commissioned essay The Dance of Mind introduces the monograph, whilst an informal Q&A between Harrington and journalist JJ O'Donoghue illuminates the methods of his practice. An accompanying zine entitled 'Before 2008'-designed to echo the DIY means of Harrington's youth-profiles the rebellious, creative landscape of his Cork adolescence.
