Book excerpt: Art & Today is an innovative and extensive survey of international contemporary art from the 1980s to the present. Over four hundred of the most significant contemporary artists from around the world are represented in this comprehensive overview - some emerging, some mid-career, and others long established. Each of the book's sixteen chapters address recurring and relevant themes as diverse as "Art & Popular Culture," "Art & Its Institutions," and "Art & Globalism," rather than follow a strict chronological, geographical, or stylistic structure. Lively and up-to-date, Art & Today explores an era in which art defies simple categorization. The result is a surprising and original yet clear and reasoned perspective on contemporary art that breaks from prescribed classifications to offer a survey as expansive as the art it describes. For instance, in the chapter "Art & the Body," one might find performance discussed alongside figurative painting, sculpture and photography alongside video, and North American artists alongside Asian artists. The chapter "Art and Globalism" discusses artists whose nationality, generation, and medium are as diverse as those of Alan Sekula, Michal Rovner, Cildo Meireles, Manuel Ocampo, Chen Zhen, and Andreas Gursky. Internationally renowned art critic and scholar Eleanor Heartney is respected for her clear language and pragmatic approach to contemporary art. Her straightforward, engaging descriptions and explanations will appeal to both experts and newcomers alike, and will serve as an invaluable resource for years to come.

Book excerpt: In Art Today Brandon Taylor charts the ideas and practices of contemporary art across a wide international spectrum. From Minimalism and Conceptualism to video and film, from painting and sculpture to performance and installation, he shows how advanced art has continued to provoke and perplex a fascinated public. Art Today shows how the new art of the last three decades has been energized not merely by changing technologies of art-making, but by the spread of new museum architecture, by the voice of the critic, and in recent times by the activity of the powerful international curator. It also shows how the dominant narrative of advanced art in the USA and Western Europe has been invigorated by an expanding international network, from the West Coast of America, from Eastern and Central Europe, and more recently from Asia and Africa. Reviewing the major controversies of the later twentieth century and the early years of the twenty-first, it also includes a discussion of the impact of the internet and digital art. Generously illustrated in colour, Art Today is a guiding narrative to the most adventurous art of our time.

Book Icelandic Art Today

Download or read book Icelandic Art Today written by Christian Schoen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Icelandic culture is so strongly oriented towards language that the visual arts didn't truly begin to develop until the early twentieth century - which is remarkable for a Western country. This unique situation may explain the nature of the contemporary art scene in Iceland. Even though Conceptual art remains a considerable international influence, and globalization is most certainly affecting this isolated island in the North Atlantic, Icelandic art continues to develop at its own speed, marked by a playful creative energy and the pleasure of experimentation. Icelandic Art Today introduces 50 of the country's most important artists - including Finnbogi Petursson, Gabriela Fridriksdottir, Helgi Thorgils Fridjonsson, Icelandic Love Corporation, Katrin Sigurdardottir, Margret H. Blondal, Olafur Olafsson + Libia Castro, Ragnar Kjartansson and Ruri and Steingrimur Eyfjord - who have contributed to the contemporary landscape of Icelandic art from the 1970s through the present. Essays by historian and curator Christian Schoen, critic Halldor Bjorn Runolfsson and Director of the Reykjavik Art Museum Hafthor Yngvason trace the development of Iceland's avant-garde over the past 40 years.

Book Art in the Age of the Internet

Download or read book Art in the Age of the Internet written by Eva Respini and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today is the first major thematic group exhibition in the United States to examine the radical impact of internet culture on visual art. Featuring 60 artists, collaborations, and collectives, the exhibition is comprised of over 70 works across a variety of mediums, including painting, performance, photography, sculpture, video, web-based projects, and virtual reality. The exhibition is divided into five sections that explore themes such as emergent ideas of the body and notions of human enhancement; the internet as a site of both surveillance and resistance; the circulation and control of images and information; the possibilities for exploring identity and community afforded by virtual domains; and new economies of visibility accelerated by social media. Throughout, the work in the exhibition addresses the internet-age democratization of culture that comprises our current moment. The earliest work in the exhibition is from 1989, the year that Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. This development, and others that followed in quick succession, modernized the internet, and in the process radically changed our way of life--from how we access and generate information, make friends and share experiences, to how we imagine our future bodies and how nations police national security. 1989 also marked a watershed moment across the globe, with significant shifts in politics, geographies, and economies. Events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and protests in Tiananmen Square signaled the beginning of our current globalized age, which cannot be imagined without the internet.

Book excerpt: A monograph on Keith Sonnier, the revolutionary pioneer of the Process Art movement, this book documents five decades of the artist's prolific and ever-evolving exploration of three-dimensional art. One of the first artists to use light, specifically neon, as a form of sculpture, Keith Sonnier changed our ideas of what sculpture is and could be. From his early pieces such as Rat Tail Exercise and the Ba-O-Ba series to his most recent luminous neon-based series, this book explores the progression and influence of Sonnier's oeuvre. Essays in the book look at Sonnier's numerous public art projects, including a kilometer-long installation at the Munich airport, his relationship with his native Louisiana culture, and the architectural influences in his work. One of the art world's most productive figures, Sonnier continues to redefine the parameters of sculpture. This beautiful monograph celebrates an artist who has never ceased experimenting--and never stopped astonishing his audience. Published in association with the Parrish Art Museum

Book Multiculturalism in Art Museums Today

Download or read book Multiculturalism in Art Museums Today written by Joni Boyd Acuff and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at museum educators, Multiculturalism in Art Museums Today seeks to marry museum and multicultural education theories. It reveals how the union of these theories yields more equitable educational practices and guides museum educators to address misrepresentation, exclusivity, accessibility, and educational inequality. This contemporary text is directive; it encourages museum educators to consider the critical multicultural education theoretical framework in their day-to-day functions in order to illuminate and combat shortcomings at the crux of museum education: Museum Educators as Change Agents Inclusion versus Exclusion Collaboration with Diverse Audiences Responsive Pedagogy This book adopts a broad definition of multiculturalism, which names not only race and ethnicity as concerns, but also gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, and class. While focusing on these various facets of identity, the authors demonstrate how museums are social systems that should offer comprehensive, diverse educational experiences not only through exhibitions but through other educational activities. The authors pull from their own research and practical experiences which exemplify how museums have been and can be attentive to these areas of identity. Multiculturalism in Art Museums Today is hopeful and inspiring, as it identifies and commends the positive and effective practices that some museum educators have enacted in an effort to be inclusive. Museum educators are at the front-line interacting with the public on a daily basis. Thus, these educators can be the real vanguard of change, modeling critical multicultural behavior and practices.
