Book excerpt: Through a visually oriented investigation of historical (in)visibility in early modern Italy, the essays in this volume recover those women - wives, widows, mistresses, the illegitimate - who have been erased from history in modern literature, rendered invisible or obscured by history or scholarship, as well as those who were overshadowed by male relatives, political accident, or spatial location. A multi-faceted invisibility of the individual and of the object is the thread that unites the chapters in this volume. Though some women chose to be invisible, for example the cloistered nun, these essays show that in fact, their voices are heard or seen through their commissions and their patronage of the arts, which afforded them some visibility. Invisibility is also examined in terms of commissions which are no longer extant or are inaccessible. What is revealed throughout the essays is a new way of looking at works of art, a new way to visualize the past by addressing representational invisibility, the marginalized or absent subject or object and historical (in)visibility to discover who does the 'looking,' and how this shapes how something or someone is visible or invisible. The result is a more nuanced understanding of the place of women and gender in early modern Italy.

Patronage – the support of a person or institution and their work by a patron – in Renaissance society was the basis of a complex network of familial and political relationships between clients and patrons, whose ideas, values, and norms of behavior were shared with the collective. Bringing to light new archival documentation, this book examines the intricate network of patronage interrelationships in Rome. Unlike other Italian cities where political control was monocentric and exercised by single rulers, sources of patronage in Rome comprised a multiplicity of courts and potential patrons, which included the pope, high prelates, nobles and foreign diplomats. Morucci uses archival records, and the correspondence of the Orsini and Colonna families in particular, to investigate the local activity and circulation of musicians and the cultivation of music within the broader civic network of Roman aristocratic families over the period. The author also shows that the familial union of the Medici and Orsini families established a bidirectional network for artistic exchange outside of the Eternal City, and that the Orsini-Colonna circle represented a musical bridge between Naples, Rome, and Florence.

The study focuses on the intersection of art and power in the ceiling paintings commissioned by Urban's nephews in the 1620s and 1630s to adorn their new palace. Viewed against the backdrop of the changing social codes and power relationships that characterized the ferment of Rome in this period, Palazzo Barberini stands as a remarkable document asserting the divine sanction of that family's emergence. The author presents a new analytical approach for appraising the form and content of ceiling imagery, allowing for a thorough assessment of the painted scenes that functioned as vehicles of the social and political agenda of the Barberini. The vast fresco painted by Pietro da Cortona in the palace salone--the largest ceiling painting in Rome since Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling--and Andrea Sacchi's Divine Wisdom fresco receive major consideration for their novel pictorial illusionism and their poetic symbolism. These principal components of the Barberini Palace cycle embody the definitive statement of Baroque allegory as a mode of optical and intellectual persuasion. Propagandistic purpose here finds exalted theo-political expression. In sum, this study undertakes to define the linkage between art patronage and social aspirations in the last great age of papal nepotism and to establish within this societal context a new means for grasping the technical and iconographic novelties of Roman Baroque ceiling painting.

Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of patrons in the Italian quattrocento. It will be of great interest to art historians and their students and to lovers of Renaissance art and civilization. At the start of the fifteenth century the patron, not the artist, was seen as the creator and he carefully controlled both subject and medium. In a competitive and voilent age, image and ostentation were essential statements of power. Buildings, bronze or tapestry were much more eloquent statements than the cheaper marble or fresco. The artistic quality that concerns us was less important than perceived cost. The arts in any case were just part of a pattern of conspicuous expenditure which would have included for instance holy relics, manuscripts and jewels - all of which had the added advantage that they were portable and could be used as collateral for bank loans. Since Christian teaching frowned on wealth and power, money had also to be spent on religious endowments made in expiation. But here too the patron was in control, and used the arts and other means to express religious belief, not aesthetic sensibility. Thus artists in the Early Renaissance were employed as craftsmen. Only late in the century did their relations with patrons start to adopt a pattern we might recognize today. This book, which also discusses the important differences between mercantile republics like Florence and Venice, the princely states such as Naples and Milan, and the papal court in Rome, is essential for a full understanding of why the works of this seminal period take the forms they do. --inside cover.
