  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2021-03-25
  • ISBN : 1000358488
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book The Parthians written by Uwe Ellerbrock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the history and culture of the Parthian Empire, which existed for almost 500 years from 247 BC to 224 AD. The Parthians were Rome’s great opponents in the east, but comparatively little is known about them. The Parthians focuses on the rise, expansion, flowering and decline of the Parthian Empire and covers both the wars with the Romans in the west and the nomads in the east. Sources include the small amount from the Empire itself, as well as those from outside the Parthian world, such as Greek, Roman and Chinese documents. Ellerbrock also explores the Parthian military, social history, religions, art, architecture and numismatics, all supported by a great number of images and maps. The Parthians is an invaluable resource for those studying the Ancient Near East during the period of the Parthian Empire, as well as for more general readers interested in this era.

Book The Parthian and Early Sasanian Empires

Download or read book The Parthian and Early Sasanian Empires written by Vesta Sarkhosh Curtis and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much of the primary information about the Parthian period comes from coins, there has been much new research undertaken over the past few decades into wider aspects of both the Parthian and Sassanian Empires including the Arsacid Parthians, and their material culture. Despite a change of ruling dynasty, the two empires were closely connected and cannot be regarded as totally separate entities. The continuation of Parthian influence particularly into the early Sasanian period cannot be disputed. An historic lack of detailed information arose partly through the relative lack of excavated archaeological sites dating to the Parthian period in Iran and western scholars’ lack of knowledge of recent excavations and their results that are usually published in Persian, coupled with the inevitable difficulties for academic research engendered by the recent political situation in the region. Although an attempt has been made by several scholars in the west to place this important Iranian dynasty in its proper cultural context, the traditional GrecoRoman influenced approach is still prevalent. The present volume presents 15 papers covering various aspects of Parthian and early Sasanian history, material culture, linguistics and religion which demonstrate a rich surviving heritage and provide many new insights into ideology, royal genealogy, social organization, military tactics, linguistic developments and trading contacts.

Book Sculpture in the Parthian Empire

Download or read book Sculpture in the Parthian Empire written by Hans Erik Mathiesen and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study on the chronology of the sculpture, primarily large-scale, of the Parthian Empire. The catalogue describes individual sculptural monuments and enumerates results and proposals of previous research. The text volume attempts to date the monuments according to their style and other criteria (such as iconographical traits, historical identifications or the contents of accompanying inscriptions and technical details). The study deals with sculptures from the central part of the Parthian Empire, defined as the area from around the Euphrates in the west (including a few monuments from Edesa and ancient Armenia) to the eastern frontiers of Iran, and from the Persian Gulf in the south to Parthyene, the southern part of Soviet Turkmenistan, in the north. However, some ivory reliefs found at Olbia and normally included in studies on Parthian art are also treated here.

Book Looking Out

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Lord
  • Publisher : Parthian
  • Release : 2021-10
  • ISBN : 9781912681976
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Looking Out written by Peter Lord and published by Parthian. This book was released on 2021-10 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six sequential essays in this collection provide a narrative of a century and a half of Welsh painting, written with an emphasis on issues of social class and national identity. Through his earlier writing, Peter Lord has contributed to the establishment of an historical tradition of Welsh painting, but because it does not feature in the wider story of Western art history as presently told, the work revealed continues to be perceived as marginal, existing in isolation from ideas and movements in other countries. These essays break new ground by discussing the concerns of Welsh painters not only in domestic terms but also in the context of the ways in which artists in other parts of Europe and in the United States reacted to the common underlying causes of those concerns. The author challenges the idea that the work of Welsh painters is relevant only to the evolution of their own communities and, through confident and detailed analysis, validates their pictures also in terms of the arts of other Western cultures.
