Download or read book The Positive Shift written by Catherine A. Sanderson and published by BenBella Books. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the reason why spending time on Facebook makes us feel sad and lonely. Why expensive name-brand medicines provide better pain relief than the generic stuff, even if they share the same ingredients. And why a hospital room with a good view speeds up recovery from surgery. The truth is, the way we think about ourselves and the world around us dramatically impacts our happiness, health, how fast or slow we age, and even how long we live. In fact, people with a positive mindset about aging live on average 7.5 years longer than those without. That might sound alarming to those of us who struggle to see the bright side, but the good news is we can make surprisingly simple changes or small shifts to how we think, feel, and act that will really pay off. In The Positive Shift: Mastering Mindset to Improve Happiness, Health, and Longevity, Dr. Catherine Sanderson breaks down the science of thought and shows how our mindset—or thought pattern—exerts a substantial influence on our psychological and physical health. Most important, this book demonstrates how, no matter what our natural tendency, with practice we can make minor tweaks in our mindset that will improve the quality—and longevity—of our life. Combining cutting-edge research from the fields of psychology, neuroscience, and medicine, as well as vivid real-world examples of the power of mindset, The Positive Shift gives readers practical and easy strategies for changing maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors so they can live longer, happier lives. These behaviors include: • Appreciating nature, with actions as simple as eating lunch outside • Giving to others, like volunteering • Spending money on experiences, not possessions Living your best life is truly mind over matter. Believe in yourself and rethink your way to a happier reality.

Download or read book Brainstorm written by Eric Maisel, PhD and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s true: a mind is a terrible thing to waste. Yet that’s what we do when we spend our weekend — and neurons — reliving a workplace squabble, spend a family visit chewing over childhood issues, or spend hours beating ourselves up when someone brings one of our own long-held (but never worked on) ideas to fruition. This kind of obsessing gets us, like a hamster on a wheel, nowhere. But as noted creativity expert Eric Maisel asserts, obsessing productively leads to fulfillment rather than frustration. A productive obsession, whether an idea for a novel, a business, or a vaccine, is chosen deliberately and pursued with determination. In this provocative, practical guide, Maisel coaches you to use the tendency to obsess to your creative advantage, fulfilling both your promise and your promises to yourself.

Download or read book The Power of Self Talk written by Bhavya Mangla and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A true devotee works independently of the world outside and draws his inspiration, equanimity and ecstasy from the source within himself"- Bhagavad Gita Verse 12.16As per a study, it is found that on an average, in a day, we have 45000 to 55000 thoughts which translate into 25 to 35 thoughts in a minute. More than 90% of these thoughts are involuntary and the majority of them are negative. It means our mind keeps on fluctuating throughout the day.We have 2 minds; Conscious and Subconscious. The conscious mind is an active mind which is thinking, observing and doing everything with attention. Like you are reading this synopsis or when you are playing any sports like chess or when you use remote for changing TV channels. While the subconscious mind is subjective in nature and responds to whatever is stored into it. It's like a recording machine which records everything irrespective of the quality of input data (good or bad). It works in autopilot mode for different activities like walking, swimming, driving, wearing trouser, speaking. Throughout the day whatever we think and store in our subconscious mind creates our destiny. The onus lies on us to shape our destiny. If we allow Garbage in, then only Garbage will come out. So, it is important to watch our thoughts. As per the research, it has been concluded that we cannot control our thoughts, but we can always direct it where we want it to be. Self-Talk plays a very important role in directing our thoughts, wherever we want. There are different ways of doing self-talk like Verbal, Non-verbal, written and recorded. Throughout the day, knowingly and unknowingly, we are creating positive and negative self-talk, which makes us the person we have become today. We can always change whatever we want to change provided we are clear, why we want to change and when we want to change. "Choose your self-talk wisely, it is up to you!"
Download or read book Think Twice written by Michael J. Mauboussin and published by Harvard Business Review Press. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No matter your field, industry, or specialty, as a leader you make a series of crucial decisions every single day. And the harsh truth is that the majority of decisions—no matter how good the intentions behind them—are mismanaged, resulting in a huge toll on organizations, the people they employ, and even the people they serve. So why is it so hard to make sound decisions? In Think Twice, now in paperback, Michael Mauboussin argues that we often fall victim to simplified mental routines that prevent us from coping with the complex realities inherent in important judgment calls. Yet these cognitive errors are preventable. In this engaging book, Mauboussin shows us how to recognize and avoid common mental missteps. These include misunderstanding cause-and-effect linkages, not considering enough alternative possibilities in making a decision, and relying too much on experts. Through vivid stories, the author presents memorable rules for avoiding each error and explains how to recognize when you should “think twice”—questioning your reasoning and adopting decision-making strategies that are far more effective, even if they seem counterintuitive. Armed with this awareness, you'll soon begin making sounder judgment calls that benefit (rather than hurt) your organization.

A true story that empowers you to overcome limitations and surpass your goals. Download or read book The Antidote written by Oliver Burkeman and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-help books don't seem to work. Few of the many advantages of modern life seem capable of lifting our collective mood. Wealth—even if you can get it—doesn't necessarily lead to happiness. Romance, family life, and work often bring as much stress as joy. We can't even agree on what "happiness" means. So are we engaged in a futile pursuit? Or are we just going about it the wrong way? Looking both east and west, in bulletins from the past and from far afield, Oliver Burkeman introduces us to an unusual group of people who share a single, surprising way of thinking about life. Whether experimental psychologists, terrorism experts, Buddhists, hardheaded business consultants, Greek philosophers, or modern-day gurus, they argue that in our personal lives, and in society at large, it's our constant effort to be happy that is making us miserable. And that there is an alternative path to happiness and success that involves embracing failure, pessimism, insecurity, and uncertainty—the very things we spend our lives trying to avoid. Thought-provoking, counterintuitive, and ultimately uplifting, The Antidote is the intelligent person's guide to understanding the much-misunderstood idea of happiness.
