Book Playing the Bass with Three Left Hands

Download or read book Playing the Bass with Three Left Hands written by Will Carruthers and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I can confirm that should you ever find yourself on stage playing the bass guitar with tree left hands, it is usually the one in the middle that is the real one. The other two are probably phantoms. Playing the Bass with Three Left Hands tells the story of one of the most influential, revered and ultimately demented British bands of the 1980s, Spacemen 3. In classic rock n roll style they split up on the brink of their major breakthrough. As the decade turned sour and acid house hit the news, Rugby's finest imploded spectacularly, with Jason Pierce (aka Jason Spaceman) and Pete Kember (aka Sonic Boom) going their separate ways. Here, Will Carruthers tells the whole sorry story and the segue into Spirtualised in one of the funniest and most memorable memoirs committed to the page.

Book excerpt: Gabriel Orozco's Asterisms is a two-part sculptural and photographic installation comprising thousands of items of detritus he gathered at two sites - a playing field near his home in New York City and a coastal wildlife reserve in Baja California, Mexico. Presented as a taxonomic study of material, shape, size and colour, the exhibition highlights Orozco's subtle practice of subjecting the world to personal, idiosyncratic systems while invoking several of the artist's recurring motifs, including the effects of erosion, the poetry of the mundane, the relationship between the macro and the micro, and the tension between nature and culture. Nancy Spector, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Guggenheim Museum, contributes an essay to this richly illustrated volume.

Book excerpt: Since the 1990s, critics and curators have broadly accepted the notion that participatory art is the ultimate political art: that by encouraging an audience to take part an artist can promote new emancipatory social relations. Around the world, the champions of this form of expression are numerous, ranging from art historians such as Grant Kester, curators such as Nicolas Bourriaud and Nato Thompson, to performance theorists such as Shannon Jackson. Artificial Hells is the first historical and theoretical overview of socially engaged participatory art, known in the US as "social practice." Claire Bishop follows the trajectory of twentieth-century art and examines key moments in the development of a participatory aesthetic. This itinerary takes in Futurism and Dada; the Situationist International; Happenings in Eastern Europe, Argentina and Paris; the 1970s Community Arts Movement; and the Artists Placement Group. It concludes with a discussion of long-term educational projects by contemporary artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tania Bruguera, Pawe? Althamer and Paul Chan. Since her controversial essay in Artforum in 2006, Claire Bishop has been one of the few to challenge the political and aesthetic ambitions of participatory art. In Artificial Hells, she not only scrutinizes the emancipatory claims made for these projects, but also provides an alternative to the ethical (rather than artistic) criteria invited by such artworks. Artificial Hells calls for a less prescriptive approach to art and politics, and for more compelling, troubling and bolder forms of participatory art and criticism.

Then and there, she made a vow to God that if she ever had the opportunity to save a life, she would do it. But she did much more than that. When she was appointed the housekeeper for a German major, the highest-ranking German officer in Tarnopol, Poland, Irena saved thirteen lives by hiding twelve Jews in her employer’s basement, without his knowledge, for eight months. The thirteenth life she saved was a baby who was conceived in hiding. Now a major motion picture starring Sophie Nélisse, Irena’s Vow is one of the most remarkable, true stories of courage to come out of the Holocaust.

Book We are All Flesh

Download or read book We are All Flesh written by Berlinde de Bruyckere and published by Mer. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berlinde De Bruyckere's work prompts the viewer to respond. That is why it has a particular appeal for writers of literature: they are fascinated by the compositions of distorted parts of humans and horses that refer to horror and comfort, to a cruel death and the sublime. De Bruyckere empties the bodies. Through holes, the public notices the darkness of a world inside that both appeals and repels. There is space around her work that resonates and in which writers can indulge in creativity -not by writing about objects, but by juxtaposing the work with creative texts. The author does not remove meanings of the work by trying to explain it, but rather adds to its meaning by responding to art with art. Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee rises to this challenge: together with De Bruyckere he has chosen fragments from his impassioned and unsettling novels that are full of great beauty. Thus, the two present a composition of texts and images that from inside illuminates the dark world of their work.

Book excerpt: "Radical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art, the first comprehensive survey of performance art by black visual artists. While black performance has been largely contextualized as an extension of theater, visual artists have integrated performance into their work for over five decades, generating a repository of performance work that has gone largely unrecognized until now. Radical Presence provides a critical framework to discuss the history of black performance traditions within the visual arts beginning with the "happenings" of the early 1960s, throughout the 1980s, and into the present practices of contemporary artists."--Publisher's website

Book Emil Nolde

  • Author : Emil Nolde
  • Publisher : Gallery of Scotland

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Emil Nolde written by Emil Nolde and published by Gallery of Scotland. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emil Nolde (1867-1956) was one of the greatest colourists of the twentieth century. An artist passionate about his north German home near the Danish border, with its immense skies, flat, windswept landscapes and storm-tossed seas, he was equally fascinated by the demi-monde of Berlin's cafes and cabarets, the busy to and fro of tugboats in the port of Hamburg and the myriad of peoples and places he saw on his trip to the South Seas in 1914. Nolde felt strongly about what he painted, identifying with his subjects in every brushstroke he made, heightening his colours and simplifying his shapes, so that we, the viewers, can also experience his emotional response to the world about him. This book features five essays and over 100 illustrations drawn from the incomparable collection of the Emil Nolde Foundation in Seebull (the artist's former home in north Germany). It covers Nolde's complete career, from his early atmospheric paintings of his homeland right through to the intensely coloured, so-called 'unpainted paintings', works done on small pieces of paper during the Third Reich when Nolde was branded 'degenerate' and forbidden to work as an artist. Exhibition: National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, Ireland (14.02. - 10.06.2018) / Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, Scotland (14.07.-21.10.2018).
