Book Academics Artists and Museums

Download or read book Academics Artists and Museums written by Irina D. Costache and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collaboration and interdisciplinary practice in the museum are on the rise. Academics, Artists, and Museums examines twenty-first century partnerships between the museum and higher education sectors, with a focus on art museums and exhibits. The edited volume offers detailed analysis of how innovative curatorial relationships between museums and academia have sought to engage new, younger, audiences through the collaborative transformation of museums and exhibitions. Thematic topics explored include the forming and nature of interdisciplinary partnerships, the integration of museum learning into higher education, audience engagement, and digital technology. With a particular emphasis on practice in the US, the range of projects discussed includes those at both widely recognized and lesser known institutions, from The Met to the Tohono O’odham Nation Cultural Center in the US, to Ewha University Museum in South Korea, and Palazzo Strozzi in Italy. The role of art and the work of the artist are firmly positioned at the core of many of the relationships explored. Academics, Artists, and Museums advocates for the museum as an experimental ‘laboratory’ where academia, art and the museum profession can combine to engage new audiences. It is a useful resource for museum professionals, artists, scholars, and students interested in collaboration and innovative practice.

Book Museums and Higher Education Working Together

Download or read book Museums and Higher Education Working Together written by Jos Boys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years the educational role of the museum has come to be central to its mission. There are now far more educational opportunities, new spaces, new interfaces - both digital and physical, and a growing number of education and interpretation departments, educational curators and public engagement programmes. Despite these developments, however, higher education has remained a marginal collaborator compared to primary and secondary schools and to other forms of adult learning. This has meant that the possibilities for partnerships between universities, colleges, museums and galleries has remained relatively unexplored, especially in relation to their potential for generating innovative patterns of research and learning. This book addresses the key issues which are preventing such partnerships and examines how to enable more effective and creative connections between museums and higher education. The authors identify conceptual and practical barriers and explore whether current academic models are fit for purpose. They argue that as pressures mount on public educational resources around the world, there needs to be an urgent increase in the exchange of knowledge across these sectors and the forging of world-class scholarly partnerships. Examples of research undertaken internationally offer best practice models for collaboration and integration. This book will be compulsory reading for museum and educational specialists and those interested in engaging in museum/higher education partnerships. It will also be of interest to those involved in policy and decision-making in education, the museum sector and national and local government.

Book Engaging Communities Through Civic Engagement in Art Museum Education

Download or read book Engaging Communities Through Civic Engagement in Art Museum Education written by Bobick, Bryna and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-12-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As art museum educators become more involved in curatorial decisions and creating opportunities for community voices to be represented in the galleries of the museum, museum education is shifting from responding to works of art to developing authentic opportunities for engagement with their communities. Current research focuses on museum education experiences and the wide-reaching benefits of including these experiences into art education courses. As more universities add art museum education to their curricula, there is a need for a text to support the topic and offer examples of real-world museum education experiences. Engaging Communities Through Civic Engagement in Art Museum Education deepens knowledge on museum and art education and civic engagement and bridges the gap from theory to practice. The chapters focus on various sectors of this research, including diversity and inclusion in museum experiences, engaging communities through new techniques, and museum and university partnerships. As such, it includes coverage on timely topics that include programs and audience engagement with the LGBTQ+, refugee, disability, and senior communities; socially responsive museum pedagogy; and the use of student workers. This book is ideal for museum educators, museum directors, curators, professionals, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students who are interested in updated knowledge and research in art education, curriculum development, and civic engagement.

Book Art and the Museum The Educational Partnership Between a Museum and a School

Download or read book Art and the Museum The Educational Partnership Between a Museum and a School written by Laurie Kader and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis provides an inside look at the dynamics of museum/school partnerships. One of the more successful of these programs is Arrimage, a program which combines art and academic subject matter geared to enhance problem solving skills, cognitive development, and to sensitize children to art and its history. My research centers on the Arrimage partnership (musee d'art contemporain de Montreal), and examines the key components of positive, interactive relationships with art educators in museums and schools. I conducted three in-depth interviews with key, but diverse Arrimage participants, each conducted in their respective institutions; one museum school educator, one generalist school-teacher and one art specialist. The generalist school teacher and art specialist worked together in the same school. Each participant was strategically chosen for the purpose of gaining as much knowledge as possible about museum/school partnerships. The three interviews were transcribed and analyzed for a different and/or a similar working knowledge of the partnership. My research shows that when schools and museums partner their resources, students benefit from art education with increased artistic skills and self-awareness; learning through the arts can shape the future of education. A successful museum/school partnership is a comprehensive and creative way for students to have a hands-on and inspiring experience in art education.

Book Multiculturalism in Art Museums Today

Download or read book Multiculturalism in Art Museums Today written by Joni Boyd Acuff and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at museum educators, Multiculturalism in Art Museums Today seeks to marry museum and multicultural education theories. It reveals how the union of these theories yields more equitable educational practices and guides museum educators to address misrepresentation, exclusivity, accessibility, and educational inequality. This contemporary text is directive; it encourages museum educators to consider the critical multicultural education theoretical framework in their day-to-day functions in order to illuminate and combat shortcomings at the crux of museum education: Museum Educators as Change Agents Inclusion versus Exclusion Collaboration with Diverse Audiences Responsive Pedagogy This book adopts a broad definition of multiculturalism, which names not only race and ethnicity as concerns, but also gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, and class. While focusing on these various facets of identity, the authors demonstrate how museums are social systems that should offer comprehensive, diverse educational experiences not only through exhibitions but through other educational activities. The authors pull from their own research and practical experiences which exemplify how museums have been and can be attentive to these areas of identity. Multiculturalism in Art Museums Today is hopeful and inspiring, as it identifies and commends the positive and effective practices that some museum educators have enacted in an effort to be inclusive. Museum educators are at the front-line interacting with the public on a daily basis. Thus, these educators can be the real vanguard of change, modeling critical multicultural behavior and practices.

Book excerpt: Museums as educational institutions can provide social, aesthetic, and historical meaning to our lives. Bringing schoolchildren to museums on field trips is a traditional way of introducing them to the museum's collections. This book describes a program developed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to bring museum collections to classrooms through their teachers. It illustrates how an idea took shape, the program that emerged and the conclusions drawn, and might serve to spark other ideas for outreach collaborations between museums and schools. "I came away with a new appreciation for the history of civilization. I kept thinking why on earth not teach history through art!" - Brenda Johnson, teacher

Book Collaboration and Virtual Learning in the Art Museum

Download or read book Collaboration and Virtual Learning in the Art Museum written by Katherine L. Ericson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For my capstone project, I examined the five online fine art courses offered through the North Carolina Virtual Public School to high school students that were developed by the North Carolina Museum of Art and North Carolina Virtual Public School. The focus of the research includes the initiation, development and implementation of the courses. Information was collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis, and assembled to create an account of why and how the North Carolina Museum of Art chose to partner with the North Carolina Virtual Public School to create courses that cater exclusively to online high school students of North Carolina. Findings include a look at the demographics and level of outreach, sustainability, and the importance of collaboration in the development process. I also created an online publication through ISSUU that serves as a concise visual representation of findings to be used as a resource for museum educators that can be found at: http://issuu.com/kericson/docs/capstone. My capstone paper describes my research process, findings, and recommendations. First I discuss the body of literature that exists that is relevant to school and museum partnerships and examines the history of distance education. Next, I describe my methodology and the resulting information from interviews with course developers that comprise the case study. Finally, I share my findings and recommendations. I conclude this capstone paper with insights concerning the museum's decision to cater to a smaller audience with their specific online learning experience.

Book The Bridge Exemplary Partnerships

Download or read book The Bridge Exemplary Partnerships written by Kayla McCormick and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this thesis is an examination of the best practices exercised by three art museum and public school partnerships currently in place across the United States. The topic is collaboration between education professionals in each of the institutions. The research aims to discover the exemplary characteristics of partnerships between art museums and public schools today, using a set of criteria developed by widely accepted scholars in the field. Oral history research methods that consisted of two interviews from each of the participating museum professionals provide the main body of information. Data collection comprises of field notes on background information of each partnership, direct field notes from verbal questions prompted through telephone interview, and transcripts of written interview sent electronically. The main hypothesis was confirmed through the discovery that one of the most essential characteristics of exemplary partnerships between art museums and public schools is the value of collaboration based on good interpersonal relationships between professionals. These findings correspond to written scholarship in the field of museum education and effective organizations generally.
