Book excerpt: Vibrant woodcuts are paired with new poems, creating a special dialogue between image and text, each throwing light on the otherThis collaboration has found a new resonance during the current pandemic, with our heightened awareness of the power of touch. The artworks celebrate the ability of hands to make, do, and communicateThis creative collaboration between artist Naoko Matsubara and poet Penny Boxall celebrates in words and colours the beauty and variety of the human hand. The series of dynamic woodcuts at the heart of this book was initially inspired by the artist's wonder at the busy hand movements of her baby son and grew into a wider celebration of hands in all their extraordinary variety - hands engaged in music, sport, prayer, or creative acts. The woodcuts convey a sense of joy and energy, whether exploring the symbolism of gestures, playing with form and colour, or expressing a mood or emotion. Penny Boxall's new poems were specially written to accompany the woodcuts. In their clarity and playfulness, their range of mood and their deceptive simplicity, they form a remarkable creative synergy with the art works. During the coronavirus pandemic the subject of hands - and the idea of touch or its absence - has taken on a new significance. Many of the images in the series have taken on powerful new meanings: healing hands, hands finding ways to occupy hours of furlough, or hands clapping in support of those working to keep us safe. We are particularly delighted that this elegant book has been designed by Yoshiki Waterhouse, Naoko Matsubara's son, whose baby hands were the original inspiration for the series.

In Morpho: Hands and Feet, artist and teacher Michel Lauricella presents a unique approach to learning to draw the human body. In this book, Lauricella focuses exclusively on the hands and feet—arguably the most popular and, for many, the most challenging parts of the body to draw successfully. Breaking the subject matter down into the underlying skeletal shapes, followed by the musculature, then the skin and fat, and finally, the veins, Lauricella offers multiple approaches—from simple forms to complex renderings—and a plethora of positions and gestures are included to help you improve your drawing skills.

Geared toward artists of all levels, from beginners through professionals, this handy, pocket-sized book will help spark your imagination and creativity. Whether your interest is in figure drawing, fine arts, fashion design, game design, or creating comic book or manga art, you will find this helpful book filled with actionable insights.

(Publisher's Note: This book features an “exposed” binding style. This is intentional as it is designed to help the book lay flat as you draw.)

Download or read book Success in Art Drawing Hands Feet written by Ken Goldman and published by Walter Foster Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ready to take your drawing skills to the next level? Success in Art: Drawing Hands & Feet allows beginning artists to master the challenges of rendering realistic hands and feet. Drawing realistic hands and feet in graphite pencil is a challenging subject for most beginners. With Drawing Hands & Feet, follow along as you study the common forms of the fingers and toes and learn to create and meld basic shapes to build realistic final art. Discover how light and shadow play an important part in creating muscle definition, expression, and realism. Understand the effect of perspective when choosing and rendering a pose. Drawing Hands & Feet encourages artists to master the individual parts of the form—the pose, structure, values, and shading—before approaching the composition as a whole. More than a basic step-by-step drawing guide, the Success in Art series focuses on subject matter that is often challenging for artists, regardless of skill level. From highly foundational art concepts, such as proportion and perspective, light and shadow, and composition to mastering textures and the human figure, Success in Art covers difficult subject matter in an approachable way using easy-to-grasp techniques and step-by-step exercises.

Book Art Artisans and Apprentices

Download or read book Art Artisans and Apprentices written by James Ayres and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the foundation of academies of art in London in 1758 and Philadelphia in 1805, most individuals who were to emerge as artists trained in workshops of varying degrees of relevance. Easel painters began their careers apprenticed to carriage, house, sign or ship painters, whilst a few were placed with those who made pictures. Sculptors emerged from a training as ornamental plasterers or carvers. Of the many other trades in a position to offer an appropriate background were ‘limning’, staining, engraving, surveying, chasing and die-sinking. In addition, plumbers gained the right to use oil painting and, for plasterers, the application of distemper was an extension of their trade. Central to the theme of this book is the notion that, for those who were to become either painters or sculptor, a training in a trade met their practical needs. This ‘training’ was of an altogether different nature to an ‘education’ in an art school. In the past, prospective artists were offered, by means of apprenticeships, an empirical rather than a theoretical understanding of their ultimate vocation. James Ayres provides a lively account of the inter-relationship between art and trade in the late seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries, in both Britain and North America. He demonstrates with numerous, illustrated examples, the many cross-overs in the ‘art and mystery’ of artistic training, and, to modern eyes, the sometimes incongruous relationships between the various trades that contributed to the blossoming of many artistic careers, including some of the most illustrious names of the ‘long’ eighteenth century.
