Book Art Education Applied to Industry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Art Education Applied to Industry Classic Reprint written by George Ward Nichols and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art Education Applied to Industry The object of this book is to show the present need of art education in the United States; to relate something of its history in Europe; to ex plain what is meant by its application to industry; and to propose a meth od of instruction best adapted to our people and institutions. The broad meaning of the term art education has not always been understood. It is most often used in its relation to the fine arts of paint ing, sculpture, and architecture, as if these higher arts and the industries were not mutually dependent, or as if the boundary which is supposed to separate them were not, in all three of the arts, constantly invaded, so that often the product of the industry may be called a work of art. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and Industrial Education Since 1870 the rapidity of the development Of art and industrial education in the United States has been so marked and so effective, the rapid increase in the num ber of special schools and museums of the fine arts SO strik ing, as to make exceedingly difficult a satisfactory survey of this subject within the limits of a monograph. The movement for the general introduction of drawing in the public schools, and of definite endeavors to promote art education, with a purpose to develop and improve the art industries of a people, seemed alike sudden in England and in the United States. In England it was apparently the definite result Of the first world's fair - the exhibition of 1851. In the United States it had its origin in Boston, in 1870, where it was a direct outcome of the English movement. The Centennial exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, where the work in drawing of the Massachusetts normal art school, and of the public schools in Boston, was shown, made possible the rapid and remarkable development throughout the United States of the two kindred elements in education, namely, industrial art drawing and manual training. This addition of these two new studies to the regular courses of the public schools has been, perhaps, the most notable characteristic educational feature of the past two decades. AS the English were long held to be a people hopelessly inartistic and devoid Of art possibilities, their wonderful development since 1851, in so many lines Of artistic manu factures, challenges investigation, especially by a people long similarly accused as being innately inartistic, and for a long perio, d, it must be admitted, apparently deservedly SO accused. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and Industry in Education The Arts and Crafts Club of Teachers College has been able this year to realize a desire it has felt for some years, in publishing a book that attempts to show the relation of Fine Art to Industrial Art, and to represent the attitude of both departments toward the educational situation. It is felt that there is an evident need and demand for such a publication, that will, in some measure at least, answer the inquiries concerning the place of Art and In dustry in Education; and to the extent that this book meets this need and answers these inquiries, its purpose will have been realized. It should be understood, however, that the book con fines itself to the principles being worked out by the departments, and to the fact that Fine Art and Industrial Art are inseparable. An eff ort was made last year to publish a production somewhat of this nature, but for a number of reasons the undertaking was given up. It has been the good fortune of the Club this year, however, to have among its members one who voluntarily agreed to be responsible for any deficit which might result. For thus making the publication possible the Club wishes to express its very grateful appreciation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Books of Art Education In presenting to the public the series of d104 Books of Art Education, of which this volume is a part, it is desired to state briefly the aims and purposes of the plan upon which the series is based. It is not necessary to review the history of art education in public schools, nor to present argument for the introduction or retention of drawing as an important study. These questions have been exhaustively treated, and need no fresh discussion. The school that does not offer to its community some kind of systematic art instruction is today an exception. Education along specific lines should conform to the philosophy which is accepted as fundamental in general educational work. The educational principles adhered to in these books are, therefore, in accord with the psychological laws of child development which are endorsed by the leading educators of the present time, and the effort has been made to work out in these books a series of lessons that shall be not only educationally sound and artistically correct, but at the same time adapted in the different stages to the child's ability to comprehend and his power to express. With this end in view, the lessons in the d104 Books of Art Education have been divided into three groups which may be known as the Observational or Objective Group, in which the study of things is the aim; the Subjective Group, in which the study of principles or laws of beauty is the aim; and the Creative Group, in which the application of accumulated knowledge and ability is the aim. In furthering the work of the first group, the topics so familiar to the art teacher of our modern schools are treated - landscape, plants, life, and still life. In the second group are presented the principles of perspective, of industrial drawing, of color harmony, and most important of all, the principles of pure design. In the third group are placed creative exercises in composition, in decorative design, and in many forms of manual training. While the same division of work is kept throughout the course, the manner of presentation differs greatly in the different years. In the primary grades, the work is largely objective in its character. Children are taught to see and to do. Book Art in Industry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Art in Industry Classic Reprint written by Charles Russell Richards and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art in Industry The object of the survey embodied in the following report is to ascertain as accurately as possible the situation existing in American art industries as to standards of design and the conditions that at present operate to limit these standards. The report is based on no theory or traditional point of view, but has sought to be thoroughly objective in its attitude and methods. The survey has been an essentially cooperative enterprise, involving the assistance of eighty-eight individuals who served on trade and school committees, as well as many others prominent in the art industries. It represents a study of five hundred and ten producing establishments located in fifty-five different cities, as well as of fifty-five schools giving instruction in industrial art. The aim is to present a picture of actual conditions relating to the practice of applied design in the United States, to the end that clearer thought may be brought to bear upon the situation and that intelligent measures for its improvement may be developed. In the make-up of the report the more definite and concrete recommendations will be found in the summaries at the end of each of the trade surveys and in the school study. The final conclusions deal with the larger elements of the problem. It may be felt that in recommendations and in descriptive matter, undue consideration has been given to New York City. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial Arts in Elementary Education As we look back over this growth in the conception of a school study we wonder that advancement has been so slow. Industry from the first demanded of education that it be made industrial, not merely that it be made manual. The result of our inability to understand the demands made by industry has been that manual activities have flooded our schools; manual activities, activities specifically manual and decidedly unindustrial. School courses have been limited to one or two materials, easily obtained and easily worked, because teachers have persisted in holding fast to the old exploded theory that the acquisition of skill should be the ultimate aim of all industrial courses. As to the character of this activity, different opinions prevail. Some believe it is a mere educational spasm which will soon pass away; others that it is only the beginning of what we are to see, - of a new era in education. That the latter are right, that this new-born activity is justified by enduring considerations of educational and industrial policy, a survey of the more conspicuous facts will make evident enough. This survey must embrace not only the field at home, but the foreign as well. An Age of Industrial Conflict. While no one can say that the time approaches when Europe will cease to "tremble under the drums and tramplings" of martial hosts, yet it is very clear that she is now to behold a long age of industrial conflicts among the leading nations, with issues quite as momentous as an- that were decided at Waterloo or Sedan. This age has fairly set in, as a glance at the past, by way of comparison, will show. At the beginning of the present century, it was the well-drilled soldier upon whom the different nations of Europe relied for defence: the well-trained workman counted for little.
