As the title suggests, it is a 30-day adventure that will jolt your life to a new level of engagement. Unlike many devotional books that offer a nice story and a moving thought for the day, "Ready for a Revolution" is more like an interactive devotional. Each day you will be challenged with concrete activities and thought-provoking exercises. Froswa' Booker-Drew takes you on a journey of deep reflection that has the potential to transform your life. You will gain insight into yourself, your relationships, and your world. These are the kind of insights that can lead you to significant change in your life. "This journal is a guide not a solution. I am a believer in reflective learning. My goal is to make you think. In understanding your story, especially in relationship with God and with others who can support you, the changes you want to see are possible. This is a 30 day opportunity to think about your life, your habits, and your desires." Dr. Froswa' Booker-Drew is currently National Community Engagement Director for World Vision, where she serves to facilitate the emergence and strengthening of community-led initiatives to improve and sustain the well-being of children and their families. She supervises staff in several locations around the United States. She was a part of the documentary, Friendly Captivity, a film that follows a cast of 7 women from Dallas to India. She was a semi-finalist for the SMU TED Talks in 2012. Froswa' is the author of the book, Rules of Engagement: Making Connections Last. The workbook helps women build identity and psychological capital that can result in stronger social capital.

Book Allie Victoria Tennant and the Visual Arts in Dallas

Download or read book Allie Victoria Tennant and the Visual Arts in Dallas written by Light Townsend Cummins and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2016 Liz Carpenter Award for the Research in the History of Women, presented at the Texas State Historical Association Annual Meeting At Fair Park in Dallas, a sculpture of a Native American figure, bronze with gilded gold leaf, strains a bow before sending an arrow into flight. Tejas Warrior has welcomed thousands of visitors since the Texas Centennial Exposition opened in the 1930s. The iconic piece is instantly recognizable, yet few people know about its creator: Allie Victoria Tennant, one of a notable group of Texas artists who actively advanced regionalist art in the decades before World War II. Light Townsend Cummins follows Tennant’s public career from the 1920s to the 1960s, both as an artist and as a culture-bearer, as she advanced cultural endeavors, including the arts. A true pathfinder, she helped to create and nurture art institutions that still exist today, most especially the Dallas Museum of Art, on whose board of trustees she sat for almost thirty years. Tennant also worked on behalf of other civic institutions, including the public schools, art academies, and the State Fair of Texas, where she helped create the Women’s Building. Allie Victoria Tennant and the Visual Arts in Dallas sheds new light on an often overlooked artist.

Book excerpt: In 1936, Texas commemorated the 100th anniversary of its independence from Mexico with a series of statewide celebrations. A central exposition was proposed, with four cities waging a sometimes bitter campaign to secure the rights to stage this auspicious event. At stake for the host city was unparalleled national exposure and a strong economic boost in the midst of the Great Depression. Using the existing grounds and buildings at Fair Park as the basis of its bid, Dallas outhustled and outspent its competitors to be designated as the host city of the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition. The fair was planned by chief architect George Dahl with legions of talented designers and artists who collaborated to produce one of the great American world's fairs of the 1930s. In addition to the centennial celebration, 1936 marked the 50th anniversary of Fair Park as the site of the great State Fair of Texas. Many of the exhibition structures, livestock barns, and sports and performance venues built for the fair over the previous 50 years were incorporated into the new layout and design of the exposition. The architectural style that was applied to the old and new buildings at Fair Park was described as "Texanic," a combination of Texas iconography and classical motifs with the more spare, streamlined regimen of the moderne style. The result was a revelation to the millions of visitors that attended the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936.
