Reviews From: "Journal of Olympic History", Vol. 9, No. 2, Spring 2001 Review by Anthony Bijkerk, the Netherlands "Over a period of forty years, I have read and collected many books on the Olympic Games, and of course in several of these books one can find references to the Olympic Art Competitions in the period from 1912 to 1948. But as far as I know, this happens to be the very first time an overall and complete history of this Olympic Art competition has ever been published. Richard Stanton has done a wonderful and thorough research on this particular subject. Every Olympic historian should be able to remember how Pierre de Coubertin in 1906 declined going to the Intercalary Games inAthens... ...Richard Stanton went through the archives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne with the finest comb he could find, with the result that we now have an almost complete insight in the efforts Coubertin put into making possible the union of sports and arts in the Olympic Games. Stanton made an English translation of many letters in the French language which he found in the archives... ...In this particular issue of the Journal of Olympic History, May 2001, Mr. Stanton, in an article submitted at the same time as his book, gives interesting details about the winners of that art competition from 1912. He continues with the developments of the art competitions in Antwerp 1920, Paris 1924, Amsterdam 1928, Los Angeles 1932 and Berlin 1936. The situation after World War Two, with the Olympic Games in London (and the last full art competition) is also given, just before the final chapter on the disparate union of the arts and sport unfolds immediately after these Games. In three consecutive chapters with the appropriate titles: "The Throwing of the Gauntlet", "The Setting of the Midnight Sun", and "The Coup de Grace", Stanton describes the circumstances (and persons involved), that made an end to the Olympic Art Competitions, and finally changed them into Olympic Art Exhibitions! Many of these details are known, but the whole story unfolds before us in a dramatic way. Of particular interest are the final chapters, giving us the possibility to meet with several artists who participated in these art competitions and won an Olympic medal or an Honorable Mention. Of course, for those of us who are interested in statistics, the full list with "Results, Lists & Other Curiosities" is the end of this interesting book."

Book excerpt: The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, proudly presents the original Olympics in all their sweaty, heroic glory. Like today, sports were a vital part of daily life in ancient Greece. "Games for the Gods" unearths the original traditions of athletics, highlighting both the fascinating similarities and the jarring differences between the ancient ways and our own. We might not be used to such Classical customs as associating athletic festivals with certain gods, seeing our athletes compete in the nude, or having them indulge in dirty fighting as accepted practice (then again...), but the excitement of competition, admiration for athletic skill, and adoration of champions--as well as several of the sports--are just as familiar to fans today as they were to the ancients. The Greek Games here come to life in a series of texts that explore the Olympics then and now, the origins of the games and various athletic events, and the ways in which the contests were prepared for and the victors honoured. With stunning illustrations of over 140 sculptures, vases, and coins, as well as photographs of modern athletes, "Games for the Gods" is a unique celebration of the Olympic spirit through the ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The article deals with the art competitions that appeared on the program of modern Olympic Games between 1912 and 1948. It reveals the philosophical background of their existence within the Summer Olympics and their relation to the idea of kalokagathia. The article describes the reasons for their origin and how the founder of the modern Olympic Movement Pierre de Coubertin succeeded in pushing this idea forward. Czech and Czechoslovak artists were frequent participants in the competitions. In total, works by more than 50 Czechoslovak artists were presented and some were remarkably successful. Two composers Josef Suk and Jaroslav Křička and a sculptor Jakub Obrovský were even awarded Olympic medals in the 1930s. The article aims to present a lesser known but important place of art competitions in the history of the modern Olympic Movement and to recall the achievements of Czech and Czechoslovak artists.

Book The Youth Olympic Games

Download or read book The Youth Olympic Games written by Dag Vidar Hanstad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) were held in Singapore in 2010 and the first winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck in 2012. The IOC hopes that the YOG will encourage young people to be more active and that they will bring the Olympic movement closer to its original founding values. This is the first book to be published on the Youth Olympic Games. It critically examines the origins of the Games and the motives of the Games organisers, as well as the organisation and management of the Games and their wider impact and significance. The first part of the book discusses the relationship between the YOG and the ideology of Olympism, in the context of broader developments in youth sport competitions. The second part investigates a wide range of managerial aspects including the bidding process, finance, the prominent role of young people on the organising committees and as volunteers, the role of media and sponsors, and the distinctive competition structure. The final part of the book assesses the current and likely future impact of the YOG on the host cities and countries, the IOC and on national youth sport policies. The Youth Olympic Games is essential reading for any researcher, advanced student or policy maker with an interest in Olympic Studies, sports development, sport policy, youth sport or event management.

Book The Olympic Games and Cultural Policy

Download or read book The Olympic Games and Cultural Policy written by Beatriz Garcia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how cultural policies are reflected in the design, management and promotion of the Olympic Games. Garcia examines the concept and evolution of cultural policies throughout the recent history of the Olympic Games and then specifically evaluates the cultural program of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. She argues that the cultural relevance of a major event is highly dependent on the consistency of the policy choices informing its cultural dimensions, and demonstrates how such events frequently fail to leave long-term cultural legacies, and are often unable to provide an experience that fully engages and represents the host community, due to their over-emphasis on an economic rather than a social and cultural agenda.

Book Competition Or Exhibition

Download or read book Competition Or Exhibition written by Chris Ingraham and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though they are widely forgotten today, the Modern Olympic Games once offered competitive medals for art. This tradition, which lasted through the seven Summer Olympic Games held from 1912 to 1948, found artists competing for gold much as athletes do now. These artists represented their nation in judged competitive events showcasing artistic works. In its initial form, the 'pentathlon of the muses,' as it was called, included competitive events in architecture, musical composition, sculpture, painting and literature. This paper considers the history of these arts competitions and their eventual demise as a study in cultural policy, arguing that no understanding of cultural policy is sufficient unless it considers the rhetorical factors that contribute to its formation.
