Book excerpt: ""The amount sounds marvellous: 3500 years of Colombian art! Do we really have so much art to review? So much to show? This new book by Villegas Editores indicates so." "Through a chronological synthesis, for the first time in a single volume, the artistic production is grouped together to what today is Colombian territory. The book presents the early manifestations of pre-Columbian art until and throughout the Twentieth Century." "This recount, supported by the collections from the Gold Museum and the Art Collection, both part of the Central Bank of Colombia, and complemented by other important public collections, focuses on the periods starting from the Conquest, on painting and sculpture. It is the author's opinion - Santiago Londono Velez - that the rest of the material in the book deserves a separate treatment."--Rabat de la jaquette

Book excerpt: Signat l'amic del Cor is a song cycle by Nico Gutiérrez for mezzo-soprano, piano, and audio samples. Comprised of five songs, Signat l'amic del Cor is sung entirely in Catalan and is a tribute to two of Catalonia's most prominent and distinguished poets. Based on the texts by Carles Duarte and Màrius Sampere, this cycle explores themes of love, nature and, most importantly, water in a contemporary, neo-impressionist soundscape. Written in 2019, the cycle was premiered by Patricia Caicedo and Nikos Stavlas at the 15th annual Barcelona Festival of Song at the Palau de la Música Catalana. In this cycle, Nicolás Gutierrez knew how to capture the depth of the poetry as well as the rhythm of the Catalan language. Signat l ́amic del cor is a 21st-century cycle; it includes electronic elements, like the sound of the sea or the recording of the voice of one of the poets. These elements contribute to highlighting the meaning of the poem, making the cycle more accessible to contemporary audiences. This cycle brings freshness and diversity to the genre of art song by giving life to the Catalan language, one of the most beautiful and least sung Romance languages. We are sure that this music will be heard in concert halls around the world.

Book The Baroque World of Fernando Botero

Download or read book The Baroque World of Fernando Botero written by John Sillevis and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colombian-born Fernando Botero (b. 1932) is a painter, sculptor, and draftsman renowned for his extravagantly rounded figures combining the polish and excess of Spanish colonial baroque with the social realism of the Mexican muralists. Their humorous exaggeration belies the more serious content of Botero’s work—commentary on colonialism, political instability in Latin America, and the vernacular artistic traditions of the region, as well as European art history. Accompanying the artist’s first American retrospective in over thirty years, The Baroque World of Fernando Botero is the most extensive study of his life and work to date. Drawn exclusively from Botero’s private collection, the 100 works featured in this book, including previously unpublished paintings and drawings, represent the full scope of his oeuvre from a uniquely personal perspective. Many of these—portraits of friends and family members and remembered scenes—have remained in the artist’s possession since their creation, while others he has bought back over the years as markers of significant developments in his career. Three essays examine the artist’s creative life, from the aesthetic environment in which Botero developed his unique style to his catalyzing influence on the Colombian art world of the 1960s and 70s.

Book excerpt: "This book presents artifacts - or artefactos - from everyday life, objects that have accompanied Colombian people through the centuries, both in their earthly and spiritual activities. In both English and Spanish, the word artifact means, literally, "made with skill or art." Although all worthy of museums and galleries, these are not just exhibition pieces, nor are their makers all members of a separate artisan class. There is no Colombian home, however humble, that does not have a handmade broom, stool, basket, textile, or rustic furniture; nor is there a single Amazon Indian who cannot quickly piece together a basket from leaves found in the jungle."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Colombian Constitutional Law

  • Author : Manuel José Cepeda Espinosa
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Colombian Constitutional Law written by Manuel José Cepeda Espinosa and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides in English the case law of the Colombian Constitutional Court, which has become one of the most creative and important courts of the global south and the world since its creation in 1991. It offers concise and carefully chosen extracts of the Court's most important cases, along with notes and introductory materials to place them in historical and comparative context. The book covers the Court's landmark rights jurisprudence, including the decriminalization of drug possession, the legalization of same-sex marriage, the protection of social rights through broad structural orders such as the ones covering internally displaced persons and the right to health. It also covers the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples to cultural autonomy and to be consulted before economic projects are undertaken on their land, and the rights of victims of the country's long-running internal armed conflict to truth, justice, and reparations. Also provided are the Court's most noteworthy structural cases, particularly its successful attempt to limit the use of states of exception and its substitution of the constitution doctrine, which allows it to strike down amendments that replace rather than amending core principles of the existing constitutional order. The materials focus on the Court's contributions in a comparative perspective, showing how they are exemplary of a range of problems faced by courts around the world and particularly as an example of aggressive judicial review by the courts of the global south. At the same time, they demonstrate how many of the Court's key cases - such as the judicial review of the peace process with guerrilla groups or the striking down of an amendment to allow a popular president to seek a third term - are reactions to the historical features of the Colombian legal and social landscape.
