Book Art and the Camera Classic Reprint

Download or read book Art and the Camera Classic Reprint written by Antony Guest and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and the Camera Such matters are dealt with in a somewhat dis cursive way, without any notion of producing a cut and-dried text-book that will tell the reader exactly what to do; it is rather sought to bring his aesthetic and intellectual faculties into play on the various branches of the subject, so that there may be a stirring Of ideas with reasonable principles as their basis. Though well aware of the proverbial danger of giving reasons for critical or any other kind of judgement, I have endeavoured to do so through out, for it has seemed to me that unless the artistic impulse has a logical foundation it is very likely to go astray; and at least in finding arguments to oppose to the views expressed, the aspirant must inevitably widen his own artistic horizon. If he can be induced to think about, and to grip the meanin of the qualities that will make his work pictoria a great part of the present object will have been attained; but the book is also designed for the assistance of those who are advancing still further in the artistic use of photography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colour Photography: And Other Recent Developments of the Art of the Camera An exquisite automatic delicacy resulting in an image of unyielding exactness - that, then, is the physical basis Of this autochrome process; and our task is to discover what manner Of azsthetic structure it is possible to erect on such a base. And when we examine the case for Autochrome in this bare way, picked clean and reduced to its simplest elements, two decidedly ominous Circumstances begin to thrust themselves forward. For we find, in the first place, that the exquisite automatic delicacy is Of such a jealous nature that it becomes the stern enemy Of all subsequent delicacies. And we find, in the second, that the unyielding exactness of the image is veracious in that fanatical way which is really a kind Of fierce falsehood, that the image is truer to Nature than Nature is true to herself, so implacably precise that it is in effect a distortion. We are so focused on the products of the camera, the indelible images marking our lives and times, that it's easy to forget the instrument itself has a history. Now that history has been comprehensively traced for photography buffs and amateurs alike by Todd Gustavson, Curator of Technology at George Eastman House. In this ... volume, hundreds of new and archival images from George Eastman House bring the story to life and provide an unmatched reference source. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camera Craft, 1930, Vol. 37: A Photographic Monthly Four years ago I found the load I was carrying, without vaca tions or even short periods of rest, was beginning to exact its ines capable toll. Irritability of temper, and other unpleasant Sensations became manifest. The violin, dearly loved from childhood and erstwhile a source of pleasure, lost its relaxing charm. The camera was suggested as a toy, a diverting instrument. After some hesita tion and not a little amusement at the idea I accepted. A camera it should, be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camera Craft, Vol. 13: A Photographic Monthly; July 1906 Probably if one W ere to sift to the bottom the prejudice that makes pos sible this sweeping statement he would find that it has been largely caused as I have already suggested by the attitude of the photographers of the old school towards anything that smacked of art. Further than this is the wide spread belief among laymen that the whole thing is as cold and mechanical as a burdy-gurdy; that personality, impressionism; and all great art is in some degree impressionistic; may\ not be infused into the products of a series of mechanical processes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art in Photography: With Selected Examples of European and American Work Graphy, or the Art of the Camera, with some degree of exactness. Most, however, of these have been foredoomed to failure by reason of the rapid developments which not only the technical but also the art side have recently undergone. What is true of its general limitations today may not be nearly so true to - morrow, next week, next month, or a year hence. There are many who are of the opinion that Photography's claim to be an art is being most surely and steadily advanced along the lines of pictorial composition the elimination either by treatment of the negative or of the print of the superfluous and the crude; and the more subtle and artistic methods of printing which have during the last decade, and even during the last five years, come into general favour with its best exponents, and have at the same time brought about so distinct and advantageous a change. But, as has been so often said, it is the spirit at the back of all photographic work, in a word the mind behind the focussing screen, and in the dark room, and the sentiment which is brought to bear when the actual print is about to be produced or the initial experiment in printing made, which may or may not go far to support the claim that the results attained are artistic. Many workers are given to take themselves - not their work - too seriously, and are prone to relegate the negative to an altogether subsidiary position as regards the picture. It is little use to adopt this course unless there be something in the training or tempera ment of the individual capable of producing that too frequently rare result, a photographic picture in which real sentiment and personal expression is evident. It is pretty safe to assert that where such results are attained they are more often than not brought about by either the trained or innate artistic perception of the worker rather than by the adoption of any of the canons which are held by some to govern the production of prints laying claim to be pictorial. Without the natural gift of artistic expression, all the art knowledge in the world will, in nine cases out of ten, when applied to photo graphy prove futile. The elements of composition which go to the making of painted pictures may be acquired, but with the camera one is confronted by a medium of expression far more uncompromising than that afforded by a colour box. It is the knowledge and intuition which brings about the softening and modifying of the uncompromising character of the results usually obtained by the camera; the power of elimination of the crude or superfluous (so far as possible) on the actual negative, and afterwards on the print itself; and the introduction of atmosphere and G B 2.
