Book Introduction to Controlled Vocabularies

Download or read book Introduction to Controlled Vocabularies written by Patricia Harpring and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed book is a “how-to” guide to building controlled vocabulary tools, cataloging and indexing cultural materials with terms and names from controlled vocabularies, and using vocabularies in search engines and databases to enhance discovery and retrieval online. Also covered are the following: What are controlled vocabularies and why are they useful? Which vocabularies exist for cataloging art and cultural objects? How should they be integrated in a cataloging system? How should they be used for indexing and for retrieval? How should an institution construct a local authority file? The links in a controlled vocabulary ensure that relationships are defined and maintained for both cataloging and retrieval, clarifying whether a rose window and a Catherine wheel are the same thing, or how pot-metal glass is related to the more general term stained glass. The book provides organizations and individuals with a practical tool for creating and implementing vocabularies as reference tools, sources of documentation, and powerful enhancements for online searching.

Book Essential Thesaurus Construction

Download or read book Essential Thesaurus Construction written by Vanda Broughton and published by Facet Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many information professionals working in small units today fail to find the published tools for subject based organization that are appropriate to their local needs, whether they are archivists, special librarians, information officers, or knowledge or content managers. Large established standards for document description and organization are too unwieldy, unnecessarily detailed, or too expensive to install and maintain. In other cases the available systems are insufficient for a specialist environment, or don't bring things together in a helpful way. A purpose built, in-house system would seem to be the answer, but too often the skills necessary to create one are lacking. This practical text examines the criteria relevant to the selection of a subject management system, describes the characteristics of some common types of subject tool, and takes the novice step-by-step through the process of creating a system for a specialist environment. The methodology employed is a standard technique for the building of a thesaurus that incidentally creates a compatible classification or taxonomy, both of which may be used in a variety of ways for document or information management. Key areas covered are: What is a thesaurus? Tools for subject access and retrieval What a thesaurus is used for Why use a thesaurus? Examples of thesauri The structure of a thesaurus Thesaural relations Practical thesaurus construction The vocabulary of the thesaurus Building the systematic structure Conversion to alphabetic format Forms of entry in the thesaurus Maintaining the thesaurus Thesaurus software The wider environment. Readership: Although primarily aimed at the practising information professional, the book is also suitable for students of library and information science.

This book was released on 1994-03 with total page 3182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) provides a standard, controlled vocabulary for use by indexers, catalogers, and other professionals concerned with information management in the fields of art and architecture. This new, complete second edition contains more than 90,000 words and phrases used to describe objects, materials, activities, agents, styles and periods, physical attributes, and associated concepts in the disciplines of fine arts, architecture, decorative arts, and material culture of the Western world from antiquity to the present. The vocabulary is presented both in hierarchical displays and in alphabetical order, providing the user with precise information on definitions, relationships, and dependencies of related terms. The standardized vocabulary allows the primary users to compile accurate, consistent records of items in their collections. Applicable to a broad range of archival and special collections, the AAT can be used to describe not only objects but also visual surrogates of objects (slides, photographs, etc.), documents and records, and publications. Each recommended term, or descriptor, included in the AAT represents a single concept; synonyms and spelling variants are included as "lead-in terms." The second edition contains 24,496 descriptors, 2,756 guide terms, and 63,003 alternate and lead-in terms, for a total American English vocabulary of 87,499 terms. Also included are 3,462 related terms and 1,812 British English descriptors, alternate terms, and lead-in terms. The addition of British English terms in the second edition enhances the use of the AAT for an international audience. The Guide to Indexing and Cataloging with the Art and Architecture Thesaurus is directed to members of four major indexing and cataloging communities--archives, libraries, museums, and visual resources collections--and is intended to train them in the use of the AAT vocabulary as an indexing tool. The Guide includes a general introduction, specific instructions for indexing special materials, and separate chapters directed to each of the four user communities, written by an expert practitioner and vetted by peer review. Also included in the volume are a section devoted to management and policy issues arising from local applications of a standardized indexing vocabulary, a glossary of technical terms used in the volume, and a bibliography of suggested readings on subject analysis, indexing, and controlled vocabulary usage. This volume is set-packed with the five volumes of the second edition of the AAT and is also available as open stock.
