Book excerpt: Anecdotes are like windows to let light in upon a subject; God used these anecdotes in the D.L. Moody's ministry. He will be pleased to use them again. They are compiled here to illuminate and illustrate more clearly Bible truths often difficult to explain. The best anecdotes have been selected and carefully compiled under appropriate headings, alphabetically arranged, making the many stories easily available for the private reader and public teacher. "A book of anecdotes which have thrilled hundreds of thousands,"--Pittsburgh Banner "Wonderful….Thirty-four thousand copies have already been issued, reaching the seventh edition in three months. This is, perhaps, unparalleled in the history of Western literature; at least we know of no library book that has met with so large a sale in so short a time. It bids fair to sell right along, until everybody is supplied with a copy." -St. Louis Evangelist "A handsome and handy volume, which many will prize as highly characteristic of the great Evangelist. Throughout its two hundred pages the truth is keenly applied by the aids of wit and a peculiarly vivid and pictorial pathos." -New York Evangelist "Contains the pith of Moody's theology, methods and eloquence, and consists of a selection of the great preacher's best stories, drawn from his personal experience. It is a good insight into the workings and teachings of the great Evangelist and Christian Preacher." -New Orleans Daily Democrat "Comprises the most striking stories, told in Mr. Moody's well-known concise and graphic style, and arranged in alphabetical order….The book has been compiled by Rev. J. B. McClure, whose scholarship and journalistic experience perfectly fit him to do the work discriminatingly and well." -N. W. Christian Advocate (Methodist) "Excellent reading, and by their brevity and point will be found especially good for that occasional and perhaps, hasty reading, which is all that many persons can hope to find opportunity for." -Standard (Baptist) "The incidents are related in character - it is Mr. Moody that speaks. They are short, pointed, peculiarly apt…They form the arrows of the great marksman, and have done much of the execution of his sermons." -Zion's Herald (Boston)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1800s a supremely qualified woman educator and administrator made an unforgettable imprint on well-known missionaries, educators, and preachers. Emma Dryer worked with Pacific Garden Mission's George and Sarah Clarke, Methodist deaconess Lucy Rider Meyer, Wheaton College President Charles Blanchard, Anna Spafford--whose husband wrote the beloved hymn It is Well with My Soul--and many others. However, her greatest achievement came from her divinely guided association with evangelist Dwight L. Moody. Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, with its compelling and far-reaching ministries, would undoubtedly not exist today if not for the driving missionary fervor of Emma Dryer. Her story is finally being told in light of this association. A close examination of her ministry relationship with Mr. Moody reveals the interconnected aspects of their lives from a viewpoint never before written. This includes examining their leadership styles and effectiveness in modern day terms as well as contrasting their learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses as both evangelist and educator. This book represents the first biography of Emma Dryer's life with undying evidence of the answered prayers of a noble and virtuous woman who dedicated her life to serve and honor Christ until his eminent return.

Book excerpt: American evangelicalism has long walked hand in hand with modern consumer capitalism. Timothy Gloege shows us why, through an engaging story about God and big business at the Moody Bible Institute. Founded in Chicago by shoe-salesman-turned-revivalist Dwight Lyman Moody in 1889, the institute became a center of fundamentalism under the guidance of the innovative promoter and president of Quaker Oats, Henry Crowell. Gloege explores the framework for understanding humanity shared by these business and evangelical leaders, whose perspectives clearly differed from those underlying modern scientific theories. At the core of their "corporate evangelical" framework was a modern individualism understood primarily in terms of economic relations. Conservative evangelicalism and modern business grew symbiotically, transforming the ways that Americans worshipped, worked, and consumed. Gilded Age evangelicals initially understood themselves primarily as new "Christian workers--employees of God guided by their divine contract, the Bible. But when these ideas were put to revolutionary ends by Populists, corporate evangelicals reimagined themselves as savvy religious consumers and reformulated their beliefs. Their consumer-oriented "orthodoxy" displaced traditional creeds and undermined denominational authority, forever altering the American religious landscape. Guaranteed pure of both liberal theology and Populist excesses, this was a new form of old-time religion not simply compatible with modern consumer capitalism but uniquely dependent on it.

Download or read book Evangelicals Incorporated written by Daniel Vaca and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new history explores the commercial heart of evangelical Christianity. American evangelicalism is big business. For decades, the world’s largest media conglomerates have sought out evangelical consumers, and evangelical books have regularly become international best sellers. In the early 2000s, Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life spent ninety weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list and sold more than thirty million copies. But why have evangelicals achieved such remarkable commercial success? According to Daniel Vaca, evangelicalism depends upon commercialism. Tracing the once-humble evangelical book industry’s emergence as a lucrative center of the US book trade, Vaca argues that evangelical Christianity became religiously and politically prominent through business activity. Through areas of commerce such as branding, retailing, marketing, and finance, for-profit media companies have capitalized on the expansive potential of evangelicalism for more than a century. Rather than treat evangelicalism as a type of conservative Protestantism that market forces have commodified and corrupted, Vaca argues that evangelicalism is an expressly commercial religion. Although religious traditions seem to incorporate people who embrace distinct theological ideas and beliefs, Vaca shows, members of contemporary consumer society often participate in religious cultures by engaging commercial products and corporations. By examining the history of companies and corporate conglomerates that have produced and distributed best-selling religious books, bibles, and more, Vaca not only illustrates how evangelical ideas, identities, and alliances have developed through commercial activity but also reveals how the production of evangelical identity became a component of modern capitalism.

Book excerpt: Charles Haddon Spurgeon was a reformed pastor who adhered to the 1689 Baptist Confession of faith. Spurgeon was a prolific writer and preacher. Spurgeon sometimes preached as often as ten times in a week. The quality, as well as the quantity, of his sermons earned him the nickname "Prince of Preachers." Spurgeon adhered to Calvinist views and supported a conservative approach to biblical interpretation while categorically denying the allegorical method. He opposed all liberal and pragmatic tendencies of the church. Witnesses claim that he delivered powerful sermons that mesmerized listeners with his oratorical prowess. The sermons were unfailing accurate and plumbed the depths of spiritual thought. Spurgeon authored many works, including thousands of sermons, an autobiography, biblical commentaries, a book on prayer, as well as multiple prayers, poems, and hymns. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The solemn work of Christian ministry demands a man’s all, and that all should be at its best. To engage in ministry halfheartedly is an insult to God and man. Sleep must leave our eyelids before men are allowed to perish. Yet we are all prone to sleep, and students, among the rest, are apt to act the part of the foolish virgins. Therefore, I have sought to speak out my whole soul in the hope that I might not create or foster any dullness in others, and to this end, my lectures are colloquial, familiar, full of anecdote, and often humorous. May He, in whose hand are the churches and their pastors, bless these words to younger brethren in the ministry, and if so, I will count it more than a full reward and will gratefully praise the Lord." - Charles H. Spurgeon Includes lectures 1-7 from Volume 3 Table of Contents Ch. 1: Illustrations in Preaching Ch. 2: Anecdotes from the Pulpit Ch. 3: The Uses of Illustrations and Anecdotes Ch. 4: Where Can We Find Anecdotes and Illustrations?
