Sir, True history, like a faithful mirror, gives princes, as well as private men, an exact representation of the transactions of past ages; but if partiality infatuates the historian, or prejudice overbalances his judgment, his images appear monstrous and unnatural, and we lose the only benefit we hoped to reap from his labours. The story I now presume to lay at your Majesty's feet, is no less than the fall of the vast Persian empire, and the establishment of the Grecian upon its ruins. No period of time was ever more famous: no general ever pushed his conquests so far in so short a time, nor over-run so many countries with so small a force. None had a more numerous race of writers, to recommend his acts to posterity; but the greatest part of their compositions was either panegyric or satire; for none durst write the truth concerning him while he lived, and few seem to have had an inclination to it after his death. These, and the like considerations, moved our author to undertake this History, wherein he has drawn a more natural and lively portraiture of him than any of the rest, and painted his vices, as well as his virtues, in their proper colours. This, added to his judiciousness and impartiality, has gained him so high an esteem in the world, that the greatest princes, in different ages, have deigned him their protection. It is primarily a military history, reflecting the content of Arrian's model, Xenophon's Anabasis; the work begins with Alexander's accession to the Macedonian throne in 336 BC, and has nothing to say about Alexander's early life (in contrast, say, to Plutarch's Life of Alexander). Nor does Arrian aim to provide a complete history of the Greek-speaking world during Alexander's reign. Arrian's chief sources in writing the Anabasis were the lost contemporary histories of the campaign by Ptolemy and Aristobulus and, for his later books, Nearchus. One of Arrian's main aims in writing his history seems to have been to correct the standard "Vulgate" narrative of Alexander's reign that was current in his own day, primarily associated with the lost writings of the historian Cleitarchus.

The Persian (or Achaemenid, named for its reigning dynasty) Empire assimilated an astonishing diversity of lands, peoples, languages, and cultures. Through archaeological remains, ancient texts, and work by a new generation of historians, a picture can today be built of this remarkable civilization and their most famous leaders. Of course, far more is known about Alexander the Great and his military accomplishments, the most important of which was bringing about the demise of the Persian Empire. Over the last 2,000 years, ambitious men have dreamed of forging vast empires and attaining eternal glory in battle, but of all the conquerors who took steps toward such dreams, none were ever as successful as antiquity's first great conqueror. Leaders of the 20th century hoped to rival Napoleon's accomplishments, while Napoleon aimed to emulate the accomplishments of Julius Caesar. But Caesar himself found inspiration in Alexander the Great (356-323 BCE), the Macedonian king who managed to stretch an empire from Greece to the Himalayas in Asia by the age of 30.
