Download or read book Germain Boffrand written by Caroline van Eck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Germain Boffrand was one of the great French architects of the early eighteenth century. His work encompassed not only the design of town and country houses for the wealthy but also mines, bridges and hospitals. His Livre d’Architecture is one of the most original books on architecture ever written in France. Taking the Art of Poetry by the Latin poet Horace as its starting point, it developed an aesthetic of architecture focused on character, style and the emotional impact of a building that influenced Blondel, Le Camus de Mezieres and Soane, and is still central to contemporary debate about the nature and meaning of architecture. Translated for the first time by David Britt, Boffrand’s text is here accompanied by an extensive introduction and notes by Caroline van Eck who situates Boffrand within the main issues of eighteenth-century architectural aesthetics. Beautifully illustrated, including all the pictures chosen by Boffrand for his original publication, this book is an invaluable tool for teaching the history of architectural theory and an essential work for any architectural library. Germain Boffrand is published with the assistance of the Getty Foundation.

Download or read book EU Procedural Rights in Criminal Proceedings written by Taru Spronken and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2009 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All EU Member States are party to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which is the principal treaty setting out the basic standards for suspects' procedural rights in criminal proceedings in the EU. However, divergent practices in different Member States have hitherto hindered mutual trust and confidence between them. In order to counter this obstacle, the European Commission - in its 2003 Green Paper on Procedural Safeguards for Suspects and Defendants in Criminal Proceedings throughout the EU - held that the EU is justified in taking action in this field. Member States had also expressed the need and wish for cooperation in the matter on a EU level. However, the ideas in the 2004 Commission Proposal for a Council Framework Decision on Certain Procedural Rights in Criminal Proceedings throughout the European Union have not yet sparked any political agreement on the matter. In 2005, the Commission arranged for a study to be carried out on procedural rights in the EU in order to comply with the The Hague Programme's call for studies on the existing levels of safeguards in the Member states. This book contains the results of an EU-wide research project (JLS/2008/D3/002). The authors have conducted this follow-up report to the 2005 study, providing up-to-date information on the level of procedural rights in the Member States as a lead for possible new Commission legal initiative on the matter and as a boost for the Roadmap on Procedural Rights presented by the 2009 Swedish EU Presidency. The main procedural rights studied - the right to information, the right to legal advice, the right to legal assistance (partially) free of charge, and the right to interpretation and translation - seem to be guaranteed by law, more or less, in accordance with the ECHR in the criminal justice systems of the EU. However, a more in-depth look at the implementation of these rights raises doubts as to whether, in all Member States, everyday practice is in line with the Strasbourg standard. This underlines the need for EU action, probably even beyond this presumed acquis. Particularly striking is the fact that fundamental rights, such as the right to remain silent, to have access to the file, and to call and/or examine witnesses or experts, even if deemed basic requirements for a fair trial, are not provided for in legislation in all EU Member States.

Download or read book An EU wide Letter of Rights written by Taru Spronken and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report presents the results of the research project 'EU-Wide Letter of Rights in Criminal Proceedings: Towards Best Practice'. In this study information has been gathered on the way suspects in the EU Member States are informed in writing of their rights in criminal proceedings. Subsequently a normative framework has been developed based on the jurisprudence of the ECtHR to establish standards and a legal basis for information that should be given to the suspect in the initial phase of police investigations. Finally a model has been developed for an EU-wide Letter of Rights to be applicable throughout the EU that can function as an inspiration for initiatives on the national level as well as on the EU level. The book provides the complete research results in its annexes and an insight into the way suspects are informed of their rights throughout the EU."--Publisher.

An introduction presents the necessary background information about the framework and sources of the criminal justice system, and then proceeds to a detailed examination of the grounds for criminal liability, the justification of criminal offences, the defences that diminish or excuse criminal liability, the classification of criminal offences, and the sanctions system. Coverage of criminal procedure focuses on the organization of investigations, pre-trial proceedings, trial stage, and legal remedies. A final part describes the execution of sentences and orders, the prison system, and the extinction of custodial sanctions or sentences. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable resource for criminal lawyers, prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and criminal court judges handling cases connected with Denmark. Academics and researchers, as well as the various international organizations in the field, will welcome this very useful guide, and will appreciate its value in the study of comparative criminal law.
Download or read book Our Brother in Black His Freedom and His Future written by Atticus Greene Haygood and published by . This book was released on 1896 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haygood's Our Brothers in Black is a work that concentrates on how best to prepare the freed slaves for full participation in the American community. Noting African American community life, their relationship to the land and to their religion, he advocates education, missionary work and the establishment of black colleges. The book begins by discussing blacks' educational and economic shortcomings but discredits the popular idea that they should be returned to Africa. Haywood gives a detailed study of Lincoln and the motives for the emancipation but is focused on solving the present problem rather than condemning its existence.

Download or read book The Sassoons written by Joseph Sassoon and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spectacular generational saga of the making (and undoing) of a family dynasty: the riveting untold story of the gilded Jewish Bagdadi Sassoons, who built a vast empire through global finance and trade—cotton, opium, shipping, banking—that reached across three continents and ultimately changed the destinies of nations. With full access to rare family photographs and archives. “Engaging...compelling...well-paced and supremely satisfying. ”—The New York Times They were one of the richest families in the world for two hundred years, from the 19th century to the 20th, and were known as ‘the Rothschilds of the East.’ Mesopotamian in origin, and for more than forty years the chief treasurers to the pashas of Baghdad and Basra, they were forced to flee to Bushir on the Persian Gulf; David Sassoon and sons starting over with nothing, and beginning to trade in India in cotton and opium. The Sassoons soon were building textile mills and factories, and setting up branches in shipping in China, and expanding beyond, to Japan, and further west, to Paris and London. They became members of British parliament; were knighted; and owned and edited Britain’s leading newspapers, including The Sunday Times and The Observer. And in 1887, the exalted dynasty of Sassoon joined forces with the banking empire of Rothschild and were soon joined by marriage, fusing together two of the biggest Jewish commerce and banking families in the world. Against the monumental canvas of two centuries of the Ottoman Empire and the changing face of the Far East, across Europe and Great Britain during the time of its farthest reach, Joseph Sassoon gives us a riveting generational saga of the making of this magnificent family dynasty.
