This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Around the United States by Bicycle The red tape and minute detail this involved would have made even a preacher use some very strong language. The publication of our plans fell as a bomb-shell upon the community. Some said we were candi dates for the Kalamazoo Insane Asylum even to consider such a foolhardy proposition; a great many thought that it was simply a little newspaper story, that possibly we might start, but that we should be back very shortly; and there were a few, yes, a very few, who really did think that it was a great trip for any young man to take, consider ing it from an educational standpoint, but even they thought that we should fail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Around the World on a Bicycle: From Teheran to Yokohama During the winter I have examined, as far as circumstances have permitted, the merits and demerits Of the different routes to the Pacific Coast, and have decided upon going through Turkestan and Southern Siberia to the Amoor Valley, and thence either follow down the valley to Vladivostok or strike across Mongolia to Pekin the latter route by preference, if upon reaching Irkutsk I find it to be practicable; if not practicable, then the Amoor Valley route from necessity. This route I approve of, as it will not only take me through some of the most interesting country in Asia, but will probably be a more straightaway continuous land-journey than any other. The distance from Teheran to Vladivostok is some Six thousand miles, and, well aware that six thousand miles with a bicycle over Asiatic roads is a task Of no little magnitude, I at once determine upon taking advantage Of the fair March weather to ac complish at least the first Six hundred miles of the journey between Teheran and Meshed, one Of the holy cities of Persia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Around the World on a Bicycle I have only read specimen chapters of this book, but find in them the same simple and manly quality which attracted us all when Mr. Stevens told his story in person. It is pleasant to know that while peace reigns in America, a young man can always find an opportunity to take his life in his hand and orig inate some exploit as good as those of the much-wandering Ulysses. In the German story a Titan, Jean Paul describes a manly youth who longed for an adventure for his idle brav ery and it is pleasant to read the narrative of one who has quietly gone to work, in an honest way, to satisfy this longing. Download or read book Around the World on a Bicycle written by Fred A. Birchmore and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic, once hard-to-find travelogue recalls one of the very first around-the-world bicycle treks. Filled with rarely matched feats of endurance and determination, Around the World on a Bicycle tells of a young cyclist’s ever-changing and maturing worldview as he ventures through forty countries on the eve of World War II. It is an exuberant, youthful account, harking back to a time when the exploits of Richard Byrd, Amelia Earhart, and other adventurers stirred the popular imagination. In 1935 Fred A. Birchmore left the small American town of Athens, Georgia, to continue his college studies in Europe. In his spare time, Birchmore toured the continent on a one-speed bike he called Bucephalus (after the name of Alexander the Great’s horse). A born wanderer, Birchmore broadened his travels to include the British Isles and even the Mediterranean. After a lengthy, unplanned detour in Egypt, Birchmore put his studies on hold, pointed Bucephalus eastward, and just kept going. From desert valleys to frozen peaks, from palace promenades to muddy jungle trails, Birchmore saw it all on his eighteen-month, twenty-five-thousand-mile odyssey. Some of the people he encountered had never seen a bike—or, for that matter, an Anglo-European. As a good travel experience should, Birchmore’s trip changed his outlook on strangers. Always daring, outgoing, and energetic, he now saw an innate goodness in people. In between bone-breaking spills, wild animal attacks, and privation of all kinds, Birchmore learned that he had little to fear from human encounters. That he traveled through a world on the brink of global war makes this lesson even more remarkable—and timeless.

Book Across America by Motor Cycle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Across America by Motor Cycle Classic Reprint written by C. K. Shepherd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across America by Motor-Cycle A few months after the Armistice of 1918 was signed, when the talk of everyone concerned was either when they would be demobilized or what they would do when they were demobilized, two young men were exchanging views on this same subject in the heavy atmosphere of a very ordinary hotel somewhere in London. One was wondering how near, or how far, were the days when he would see the old home-folks once again "way back in Dixieland." The other was wondering what form of dissipation would be best suited to remove that haunting feeling of unrest, which as a result of three or four years of active service was so common amongst the youth of England at that time. "How about getting married?" suggested the one. Then followed a long pause, wherein the other was evidently considering the pros and cons of such a unique proposition. "Nothing doing," he replied eventually - "not exciting enough, old man." Another pause - "And when I come to think, I don't know of any girl who'd want to marry me even if I wanted to marry her." And as if to give a final decision to any proposal of that nature, he added - "Besides, I couldn't afford it!" "But I tell you what I will do, Steve," said he, "I'll go back with you across yon herring-pond and have a trot round America." This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across Asia on a Bicycle the Journey of Two American Students, From Constantinople to Peking The day after we were graduated at Washington Uni versity, St. Louis, Mo., we left for New York. Thence we sailed for Liverpool on June 23, 1890. Just three years afterward, lacking twenty days, we rolled into New York on our wheels, having put a girdle round the earth. Our bicycling experience began at Liverpool. After following many of the beaten lines of travel in the British Isles we arrived in London, where we formed our plans for traveling across Europe, Asia, and America. The most dangerous regions to be traversed in such a journey, we were told, were western China, the Desert of Gobi, and central China. Never since the days of Marco Polo had a European traveler succeeded in crossing the Chinese empire from the west to Peking. Crossing the Channel, we rode through Normandy to Paris, across the lowlands of western France to Bordeaux, eastward over the Lesser Alps to Marseilles, and along the Riviera into Italy. After visiting every important city on the peninsula, we left Italy at Brindisi on the last day of 1890 for Corfu, in Greece. Thence we traveled to Patras. Book The Wind s Will Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wind's Will There were two events that stood out prominently in the first twelve years of Christopher Dunham's life. The first was his discovery that money, in addition to being a useful medium of exchange, is also a standard of value and the product of the sweat of somebody's brow, either the owner's or someone subject to the owner's suasion, moral or otherwise. If it hadn't been for this first event, it is doubtful if the woman would have found the time, the place, and Christopher properly conjoined when she came driving down the road that led past the "store" and so out to the prairie, beyond which lay the rest of the world. And the coming of the woman was the second event. Christopher wanted a bicycle, one of the improved pneumatic-tired, diamond-framed, unattainable kind of safeties on which the Terrible Swede, Little Jimmy Michaels, and Jack Swinton, the county champion, rode to victory. Book Women on the Move

Download or read book Women on the Move written by Roger Gilles and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-10 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1890s was the peak of the American bicycle craze, and consumers, including women, were buying bicycles in large numbers. Despite critics who tried to discourage women from trying this new sport, women took to the bike in huge numbers, and mastery of the bicycle became a metaphor for women's mastery over their lives. Spurred by the emergence of the "safety" bicycle and the ensuing cultural craze, women's professional bicycle racing thrived in the United States from 1895 to 1902. For seven years, female racers drew large and enthusiastic crowds across the country, including Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City, and New Orleans--and many smaller cities in between. Unlike the trudging, round-the-clock marathons the men (and their spectators) endured, women's six-day races were tightly scheduled, fast-paced, and highly competitive. The best female racers of the era--Tillie Anderson, Lizzie Glaw, and Dottie Farnsworth--became household names and were America's first great women athletes. Despite concerted efforts by the League of American Wheelmen to marginalize the sport and by reporters and other critics to belittle and objectify the women, these athletes forced turn-of-the-century America to rethink strongly held convictions about female frailty and competitive spirit. By 1900 many cities began to ban the men's six-day races, and it became more difficult to ensure competitive women's races and attract large enough crowds. In 1902 two racers died, and the sport's seven-year run was finished--and it has been almost entirely ignored in sports history, women's history, and even bicycling history. Women on the Move tells the full story of America's most popular arena sport during the 1890s, giving these pioneering athletes the place they deserve in history.
