Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1903, Cambridge Springs was described in Cutter's Guide as "the Great Health and Pleasure Resort of Pennsylvania." Located in northwestern Pennsylvania on the banks of French Creek, it fell halfway between Chicago and New York City on the Erie Railroad. From the promotion of the mineral springs in 1884, this town of some six hundred people grew into a luxurious vacation spot that included accommodations such as the Riverside Hotel, the Rider Hotel, the New Cambridge Hotel (now the Bartlett), and more than forty other hotels and cottages. Around Cambridge Springs not only celebrates this town's golden age of resorts and affluence but also remembers the people, such as W.A. Baird Jr.; the places, such as Alliance College; and the events, such as the devastating fires of 1897 and 1931, that have shaped this community over the last two hundred years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marshall’s Brilliant Victory In the spring of 1904, most of the chess world’s elite gathered in the sleepy northwestern Pennsylvania town of Cambridge Springs, where the first great tournament of the twentieth century was to take place. World Champion Emanuel Lasker topped the field. The champions of America (Harry Pillsbury), Russia (Mikhail Chigorin), France (David Janowski) and the Austria-Hungarian Empire (Carl Schlechter) were also playing. Among the other players in this historic fifteen-round-robin event was a young master from Brooklyn, Frank Marshall. He had some international experience, including defeating World Champion Lasker in their individual encounter at Paris in 1900. However, he certainly was not considered among the favorites at the time. Nevertheless, Marshall finished in first place, two full points ahead of the rest of the field, the only undefeated player. The story of this great tournament is superbly told by author Robert Sherwood. Each game is deeply annotated, while contemporary sources and rare archival photos nicely supplement the round-by-round account. With this victory, Frank Marshall took his place among the world-class players of his era. You are invited to join Marshall on his journey in this splendid account of his magnificent triumph in the first major international tournament of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pennsylvania's mid-20th-century Route 6 brought together appealing natural environments, historical events, and cultural landscapes. The eastern length of the route crosses an area featuring rolling mountains and tranquil valleys dotted by farms and towns. To the west, Route 6 traverses a more level landscape that also includes lakes. This book presents the 370-mile scenic drive as a destination in itself. It covers the secluded setting of northern Pennsylvania where Route 6 and its towns have experienced minimal changes associated with larger metropolitan regions and interstate highways. As a result, the mid-20th-century landscapes of Route 6 have lingered a little longer. The authors give the reader a peek of a past not entirely swept away.
