It may not Offer the most direct route between two given points but as, avoiding the dusty high road, it leads the wanderer over verdant meadows, through fields of golden grain, or amid the still recesses of sheltering woodlands, he will not grudge the lengthening Of his journey. Along such path ways, which best afford opportunities for quiet meditation, eye and car are Often greeted by sights and sounds not seen or heard on the more frequented highway. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Country: A Book of Love Praise of England Another moment he is joining in a chorus with hundreds of his fellow-soldiers: - "Hi-tiddly-hi-ti - take me back to Blighty!" Then his thoughts fly off on another tack, for he is fed up with the war, and he recalls what he has seen in the past few days - villages as sweet as any at home ravaged and destroyed. He thinks of the cruel rapine and outrage, and he sets his teeth and determines to see it through; to do his bit, that the homeland may be spared. Yes, that little brown hut with the Red Triangle on the roof is a link with the Old Country; the letters written therein, with the Red Triangle on the paper, bring joy into thousands of homes every day. And what of the future? When the Boys come home, assuredly they will look for the sigh they have learnt to love and honour. We know that, by the long queue waiting outside headquarters every morning - men discharged from the Army or Navy who are in search of employment. The question is often asked: "What are you going to do with your huts after the war?" The answer comes clearly in one's day-dreams. One thinks of a big Triangle hut, doing good service to-day on some common, - removed when the war is over to some carefully selected site in rural England and adapted to meet the needs of village life. A Red Triangle Club-house would be a perfect boon to many a village we know, and would put an end to that deathly-dullness so many town dwellers regard as inseparable from country life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old England: Its Scenery, Art, and People The motive which has chiefly led to the publication of the following recollections of English travel, has been the hope of exerting some little influence upon our countrymen who go abroad, to induce them to spend more time in England than they are commonly inclined to do, and to see that country more thoroughly, instead of making it a stepping-stone to the Continent. There have been heretofore, it is true, good reasons for this disinclination of Americans to remain very long in England; but these reasons do not now exist, or at least to the extent that they once did. And it hardly need be said, that there is no country which contains so much of absorbing interest to a thoughtful American as Old England; finding there as he does the head-springs of the life and power of his own nation, and in almost every object that his eye rests upon, seeing that which (a short two centuries ago) formed part of his own history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Owl Tower: The Story of a Family Feud in Old England The old ivy-covered tower was haunted; there was not the slightest doubt about that in the minds of the villagers, whose white-washed cottages nestled cozily down the valley away from the sight of its evil presence. Many generations of villagers before their time had believed in its baleful in uence over those who dared to enter its walls, and nothing tending to increase the mystery attached to it was lost in transmission. Moreover, did not old Samuel Tredinnick, the village oracle, and sexton to boot, whose duties naturally made him better acquainted with such things, aver that the place was more uncanny than the village cemetery? Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old-Fashioned Journey Through England and Wales Some years ago a friend persuaded me to join him on a driving tour through the southern counties. It was my first experience of such a delightful mode of travel, and I determined it should not be my last. Before that never-to - be-forgotten journey, I thought I knew England and English scenery well, but that drive was to me a revelation. Since then fortune has been propitious; time and opportunity have permitted me to enjoy my summer holiday by taking driving excursions of some hundreds of miles every year, being away some two or three months each time. This volume is compiled from brief notes taken during one of those pleasant journeys. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old England: A God's-Eye View of a Village MY dear Omen - When I first discussed with you my idea of presenting an English village as a whole, I little guessed that it would lead me on to such an immense task. Balzac made an heroic attempt to depict the nation of his day. Despite his giant industry he needed ten lives to achieve his intention, and in these so much more. Complex days the attempt would be hopeless. It is possible, however, to portray the unit with which I have dealt and to show therein the factors and problems of the land which are basic in rural England. To do this I had to freeze my unit and exhibit it motionless. TO show it in action would take as many novels as there are characters. The village is our largest social unit, being a society in which every person knows everything about every one, and in which the whole of the members are in personal relation. Our next unit is the small market town of some 4000 inhabitants, in the least of which are a number of distinct circles; but the village, running up to 1000 souls, is a self-contained cosmos, a large family, and has no beyond. Its soul is coherent and complete. I have taken such a village at one moment during the war and endeavoured to give a camera-obscura presentment of the multitudinous intrigues, ambitions, desires, disputes, interests, and all the social, political, financial, sexual and religious factors which thread the fabric so closely.
