Download or read book Army Register of Ohio Volunteers in the Service of the United States Classic Reprint written by Charles A. Poland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Army Register of Ohio Volunteers in the Service of the United States We present this, the second edition of the Army Register of Ohio Volunteers, to the public, much improved, and corrected throughout. A large number of changes have taken place among the officers of the regiments since our last, and they will be found in the regimental lists, or among the casualties. On the 30th day of May the President called for more troops, to serve for throe months, and five regiments have been organized for that purpose. Several regiments are also recruiting for three years, among which arc the Forty-fifth, Fiftieth and Fifty-second. These regiments are rapidly filling up; and when the requisite number of men are secured they will be organized. We have endeavored to make this a perfectly reliable book of reference for both citizen and soldier, and feel assured we have succeeded. The Historic Review of the Rebellion has been brought down to date, and will be found to be a convenient and accurate record of the principal events of the war. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Record of the Ninety-Fourth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in the War of the Rebellion The history of any one volunteer regiment in the War of the Rebellion is, doubtless, very much the same as that of other regiments of the same line of service. The President's proclamations calling for volunteers, at the dates and for the numbers hereinafter mentioned, gave opportunities for enlistment according to the judgment and inclinations of different persons. There were some men with fewer hindrances than other; and some men were more disposed to adventure than others; and doubtless some men were more ready to risk their lives than others; but all men who enlisted when they believed their services were required for the prosecution of the war and the preservation of the Union should be esteemed equally patriotic. There was no regiment composed of men wholly of the same occupation. There was scarcely a company in which there were not men of nearly every profession and occupation. The volunteer army demonstrated a problem in a republican form of government which, in the minds of many people, especially in Europe, was of doubtful solution. It fully settled the question of the will and power of the people, in the absence of a large standing army, to fight their own battles, if necessary, in defense of the Republic. Everywhere, even among ourselves, there is a better understanding of the nature and stability of the Union. It is not at all probable that any sane man will ever again deem it possible to disrupt this Union by engaging in civil war. That question is settled by the arbitrament of arms. What was thus lightly undertaken then, was ren dered a duty when information was afterwards received that the warm friend and gallant officer had been removed from earth's labors, his task but partially completed. It is an awful big job, continues the General, to do the work in a way that will not class it with the hundreds of useless. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal-History of the Seventy-Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 1866 In September, 1561, a group of young men at Chillicothe, Ohio, discussed the possibility of raising a new regiment of volunteers, under the first call of the President for three hundred thousand men. After due consideration, they determined to make the attempt, and invited Captain Orland Smith, of the "Chillicothe Greys," to accept the colonelcy, and Jacob Hyer, Esq., of Greenfield, the lieutenant-colonelcy of the regiment. These gentlemen accepted the positions tendered them, and at once gave themselves to the work of recruiting and organization, A number of conditional commissions were issued by the Governor, and, by the middle of October, the work of recruiting was fairly begun. The new regiment was to be called the Seventy-third Ohio, and was ordered to rendezvous at "Camp Logan," near Chillicothe. Book History of the Fortieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Fortieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry Classic Reprint written by John N. Beach and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Fortieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry This volume is offered to survivors of the regiment as an outline history only; a bare statement of events with which we were closely identified, arranged chronologically, leaving comrades to supply details from memory. A more minute history would require access to official reports, orders etc., which the writer has not been able to obtain. What there is of the military history of the Officers and Men has been obtained under great difficulties. When the writer first determined to make a complete roster of the regiment, he expected to find all the material for such a paper in the Adjutant-General's office, at Columbus, but beyond the original muster-in rolls, this office has no records of our regiment, all others being at Washington City. Personal application for permission to copy, as well as a similar application by Adjutant-General Smith, of our State, was met by the statement that no copy of the rolls could be made by others than the clerks of the Department, and that they were so pressed with work that the courtesy was impossible. For this reason, all facts as to recruits, promotions, transfers, discharges, deaths, etc., have been obtained through a very general correspondence with comrades, many of whom have valuable memoranda. Great care has been taken to verify all statements as to those killed, dying in hospital, discharged or transferred; and all those enrolled and not thus accounted for, or by muster-out, may fairly be presumed to have served out their full time. Doubtless, errors and imperfections will be found in the roster, but it may serve as a basis for another, when some one, with better facilties, may undertake a more perfect record. As it is, the writer offers the result of his labors to his old comrades with the hope that they will find it of interest and value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Services of the Ninety-Sixth: Ohio Volunteers The Object in preparing this unpretentious volume is to place a sketch Of the History of the 96th Ohio Volunteers in permanent form, chiefly for the benefit Of the survivors of that command and the friends of those who gave their lives to their country while serving under its banner. As the events of the great war OF the rebellion become dimmed in the shadows Of receding years, increased interest will attach to them and the pages in which they are recorded become valuable, with all their omissions and imperfections; for our posterity cannot fail to refer with just pride to those who Offered their lives for the preservation Of republican liberty, as we do to those who, in the dark days Of seventy-six, won its blessings for the world, bequeathing all to our care and keeping. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Sketch of Company "B" Eighteenth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry; Three Months Service As friend Boring states we arrived at Columbus about A. M. We were marched up to the State House and spent the day about the grounds. We had a meal about 1 o'clock P. M., at the Goodale House, but so many hungry men had preceded us that but little to eat was left and that little was of poor quality and poorly cooked and served. Some of our boys had friends in the city and were invited to dinner with them and thus fared sumptuously. The first night we were quartered in the basement of the state house, where we slept on beds of straw upholstered with small lumps of coal. The next night we quartered in the rotunda of the capitol building, sleeping on the marble floor with neither straw nor coal to temper the springs of our beds. The next day we went to Camp Jackson, now Goodale Park. Here we spent some four weeks, drilling and learning the other duties of soldiers. On Thursday, the 25th, we were given quarters at the Ohio Penitentiary, taking our meals there and sleeping on the parlor and office floors and in the loft of a large barn adjoining the prison. Our meals during the time we were quartered here were taken at the mess table of the officers of the prison and were very satisfactory and a great improvement over our camp fare. We remained here about two weeks, when we returned to our barracks in camp. During our stay at the Penitentiary we spent the hours between meals at the camp drilling, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
