Book The Medical Department of the United States Army in the World War Vol 10

Download or read book The Medical Department of the United States Army in the World War Vol 10 written by Pearce Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical Department of the United States Army in the World War, Vol. 10: Neuropsychiatry Before the United States entered the World War, the attention Of both the American medical profession and the public had been attracted by the prev alence Of some apparently new types Of mental reactions under the stress Of actual campaign. From the earliest days of the fighting at Mons, stories had come to the United States Of strange new diseases apparently having their origin in the stress and special horrors Of modern warfare and presenting problems in treatment and prevention that baffled the medical organizations Of the armies that later were to become our allies. After making all possible allowances for exaggeration and highly colored lay reports Of technical and medical matters, it was apparent that some new medical problems had arisen in connection with the reactions Of the central nervous system to the new conditions Of warfare. It was also apparent that a new type Of casualty which might threaten most seriously the manpower Of armies existed in the inability Of human beings to stand more than a certain amount Of exposure to the effects Of high explosives, even though they escaped bodily injury. For these reasons the first published reports on the neurological and psychiatric aspects Of the war were eagerly read by neurologists and psychiatrists in the United States who realized, even then, that the time might very soon come when they would be dealing with the same problems in troops serving under their own flag. Book The Medical Department of the United States Army in the World War 1928 Vol 3

Download or read book The Medical Department of the United States Army in the World War 1928 Vol 3 written by Edwin P. Wolfe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical Department of the United States Army in the World War, 1928, Vol. 3: Finance and Supply The purpose of this volume is to record the manner in which the Medical Department functioned as a supply department during the World War and to give details concerning Selected articles Of supply. Because of the breadth of the subject, it is manifestly impossible to include herein all matters relating either to the administrative features of the subject or to the supplies themselves. Since this is the first time an attempt has been made to consider fully the his tory of Medical Department supplies, it is appropriate that due consideration be given to the pre-war history of supplies. More especially does this apply to that period of time intervening between the spanish-american War and the World War, for it was during this interval that the Medical Department not only brought its field equipment to a high state of e mciency but also established for itself a reasonable reserve of such equipment. Furthermore, the supply experiences of the Medical Department in connection with the Mexican border mobilization of our Army (1911 - 1916) make a fitting prelude to any considera tion of World War medical supply matters, for the one merged imperceptibly into the other. It is to be regretted that it has been possible, through lack of space, to use only two of the reports of activities Of the medical supply depots in the United States. The report of the New York medical supply depot was chosen as the type depot for description, because it always has been our most important depot and was the parent from Which the others might be considered to have sprung. While its methods of procedure may have differed in certain respects from those of the other depots, and while it is true that some depots handled certain classes Of articles to a preponderant extent, nevertheless the account Of one of these supply depots answers present purposes very well. On the other hand, since the motor ambulance supply depot at Louisville was the only depot of its kind, a chapter has been devoted to it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Jerome A. Greene is renowned for his memorable chronicles of egregious events involving American Indians and the U.S. military, including Sand Creek, Washita, and Wounded Knee. Now, in January Moon, Greene draws from extensive research and fieldwork to explore a signal—and appallingly brutal—event in American history: the desperate flight of Chief Dull Knife’s Northern Cheyenne Indians from imprisonment at Fort Robinson, Nebraska. In the wake of the Great Sioux War of 1876–77, the U.S. government expelled most Northern Cheyennes from their northern plains homeland to Indian Territory, in present-day Oklahoma. Following mounting hardships, many of those people, under Chiefs Dull Knife and Little Wolf, broke away, seeking to return north. While Little Wolf’s band managed initially to elude pursuing U.S. troops, Dull Knife’s people were captured in 1878 and ushered into a makeshift barrack prison at Camp (later Fort) Robinson, where they spent months waiting for government officials to decide their fate. It is here that Greene’s riveting narrative edges toward its climax. On the night of January 9, 1879, in a bloody struggle with troops, Dull Knife’s people staged a massive breakout from their barrack prison in a last-ditch bid for freedom. Greene paints a vivid picture of their frantic escape, which took place under an unusually brilliant moon that doomed many of those fleeing by silhouetting them against the snow. A climactic engagement at Antelope Creek proved especially devastating, and the helpless people were nearly annihilated. In gripping detail, Greene follows the survivors’ dreadful experiences into their aftermath, including creation of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Carrying the story to the present day, he describes Cheyenne tribal events commemorating the breakout—all designed to ensure that the injustices of nineteenth-century U.S. government policy will never be forgotten.

Book Getting the message through A Branch History of the U S Army Signal Corps

Download or read book Getting the message through A Branch History of the U S Army Signal Corps written by Rebecca Robbins Raines and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1996 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.
