Book Army Gas Cooled Reactor Systems Program Design Report ML 1 Precooler Test Facility Design Report

Download or read book Army Gas Cooled Reactor Systems Program Design Report ML 1 Precooler Test Facility Design Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The improved ML-1 precooler was designed and fabricated by Stewart-Warner Corporation to specifications prepared by AGN. These specifications incorporated provisions to correct the deficiencies that existed in the original ML-1 precooler design and to permit the evaluation of a unit suitable for inclusion in the ML-1A plant. The improved ML-1 precooler core is an aluminum plate and fin, single pass, cross flow heat exchanger designed to be capable of cooling 27.0 lb/sec of nitrogen gas from 500 to 125/sup 0/F, with 100/sup 0/F ambient air (under forced convection) as the cooling medium. The unit was delivered to AGN in March 1965. The improved air-side cooling assembly for the precooler was designed and fabricated at AGN, San Ramon, to correct the deficiencies in cooling air mass flow and distribution that existed in the original ML-1 precooler design. The improved cooling assembly consists of six 36-in. diameter, 1800/900 rpm fans mounted in a box-type aluminum support structure together with the associated plenum assemblies.

Book Army Gas Cooled Reactor Systems Program The ML 1 Analytical Design Report Volume IV Electrical Design

Download or read book Army Gas Cooled Reactor Systems Program The ML 1 Analytical Design Report Volume IV Electrical Design written by and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis preceding and supporting the design of the ML-1--a mobile, low-power, nuclear power plant--is described in sufficient detail for an engineer, not a specialist, to follow the development of the design. Test results and similar data are used to support the calculations whenever possible. Useless repetition of detail is avoided: when the development of several items of equipment, performing a similar function under similar conditions, is described the calculations and derivations are given only once.

Book Army Gas Cooled Reactor Systems Program Quarterly Progress Report October 1 December 31 1963

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ML-1 power plant did not operate during the report period; low power reactor physics and shielding experiments were conducted with the ML-1 reactor. Evaluation of moderate corrosion observed on aluminum parts exposed to the ML-1 shield solution indicated no loss of performance capability. Preliminary tests showed that the corrosion probably was caused by heavy metal ions or chlorides in the solution, Massive corrosion observed on the ML-1 fuel element lower spiders was attributed to sub-standard material; failure of some spiders was attributed to a combination of corrosion and sub-standard fabrication. Evaluation indicated that the upper spiders will perform satisfactorily for the design lifetime. Modification, repair, and reassembly of the CSN-1A t-c set was completed. Operation demonstrated bearing stability, but showed that the turbine effective flow area was too large. A bypass flow path in the turbine was being corrected. The TCS-670 t-c set will be stored indefinitely. Since a commercial alternator will be used for the ML-1A, further development of the brushless alternator was postponed indefinitely. Evaluation revealed that the ML-1 improved precooler design was not compatible with ML-1A requirements. Operntion of the IB-17R-2 and -3 test elements in the GETR continued without incident. Preliminary design of the ML-1A power plant was initiated. Design of modifications to the GCRE facility to adapt it to testing the ML-1 reactor skid was initiated. (auth).

Book Army Gas Cooled Reactor Systems Program Semiannual Progress Report for January 1 JUNE 30 1960

Download or read book Army Gas Cooled Reactor Systems Program Semiannual Progress Report for January 1 JUNE 30 1960 written by and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas Cooled Reactor Experiment I. Expedient modifications to the tube bundle and control rods made possible the attainment of initial critical of the GCRE-I reactor early in February. The scheduled series of low-power experiments was completed and the facility shut down in midApril to permit the permanent modification to the tube bundle, control rods, and instrumentation. Gas Cooled Reactor Experiment II. Work on the GCRE-II was limited to materials development and systems studies. These studies included mobile and portable power systems using homogeneous graphite reactors as well as modifications and improvements to the ML-1 system. The materials development effort was devoted to homogeneous graphite fuel materials. The ML-1. Activation measurements were made in the Lid Tank Facility. Reanalysis of stresses in the tube sheet indicated high stresses in certain regions. Design of most of the reactor package was completed and fabrication initiated. An alloy (80% Ag--15% In--5% Cd) was selected for the ML- 1 control blades on the basis of ductility tests, corrosion tests, and neutronic calculations. A critical experiment was performed on the ML-1 configuration with pin type fuel elements. The recuperator design selected is a four-pas-s shell and tube heat exchanger. Fuel-element Development. A preliminary design study indicated that the seven-pin fuel element does not significantly improve performance over that obtainable with the 19-pin design. A corrosion test specimen of Hastelloy X exposed for 5000 hr in air at 1750 deg F showed 0.0016- in. penetration. Beryllium oxide-- uranium oxide capsule irradiation was completed with about 2 at.% U/sup 235/ burn-up at maximum surface temperature of 1740 deg F. The IB-2T-Z irradiation test was completed after about 800 hr of operation, including 1147 thermal cycles between 1000 and 1600 deg F without any evidence of malfunction. The irradiation of the GCRE-1 plate type element (1-3P) was completed after 429 hr of operation. (For preceding period see IDO-28549.) (W.L.H.).

Book Army Gas cooled Reactor Systems Program Initial Full Power and Limited Endurance Tests of the ML 1 Nuclear Power Plant Final Test Report

Download or read book Army Gas cooled Reactor Systems Program Initial Full Power and Limited Endurance Tests of the ML 1 Nuclear Power Plant Final Test Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of the data generated during the full power and limited endurance tests of the ML-1 mobile nuclear power plant indicates that the reactor performs in accordance with the design specifications. During the 101 hr test period, the reactor attained a maximum power of 3.44 Mw(and 247 kw(e) was measured at the output shaft of the turbine-compressor set. No operating limits were exceeded during these tests and all systems performed satisfactorily Except for the known performance deficiency of the turbinecompressor set, which prevented the attainment of design output power, no operational, stability, or control problems were encountered. All test objectives were achieved and the tests were considered completely successful. (auth).
