Book excerpt: First published in 1988, Arms Transfers and Dependence was written to provide a view of arms transfers in the context of the global distribution of power. The book analyses different types of dependence and is focused on comparing the enhancement of military capabilities as a result of arms transfers with the dependence that may be caused by those transfers. Download or read book Security and Arms Control A guide to national policymaking written by Edward A. Kolodziej and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1989 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first in a two-volume set, is organized around the idea that national and international security and arms control studies are interdisciplinary fields of study. Together, the volumes give form and substance to these emerging fields. This first volume is concerned with broad analytical perspectives that are relevant to the security and arms control considerations of any national government. subfield to assist more in-depth analysis by researchers and Volume 1 is divided into four parts. The first identifies those characteristics of the international system that condition the use of or the threat to use force. It also explores those aspects of the system that prompt the need for ways to control violence and to discipline it to the national purpose. Twelve functions of national strategic policy are covered in parts two and three. A final section reviews ways that might be used to go beyond violence or threats in coping with human conflict. Through the topics selected for inclusion, the guide attempts to define the scope of security and arms control studies as a serious field of systematic inquiry. It identifies major problems, key concepts, methods, disciplinary approaches, intellectual styles, and data sources associated with the principal subfields of the discipline. It critically reviews and evaluates the most important literature associated with each subfield to assist more in-depth analysis by researchers and policymakers.

Download or read book Cascade of Arms written by Andrew J. Pierre and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 1997-11-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the post-cold war emphasis on the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the neglected dimension has been the spread of advanced conventional arms. Yet these are the arms most likely to be used in conflict. They present the greatest diversion from economic and social development, and are the centerpiece of regional security balances. This book examines the policies and practices of the major arms-supplying nations, looks at the impact of weapons purchases on the principal recipient regions and the possibilities for regional arms control, and dissects the economics of arms exports for the producer nations in both the developing and industrialized worlds. The book thoroughly discusses the opportunities for, and obstacles to, achieving multilateral restraint on arms. In addition to the editor, contributors are Ian Anthony, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute; Nicole Ball, Overseas Development Council; Julian Cooper, University of Birmingham; Lawrence Freedman and Martin Navias, King's College, London; Rodney Jones, Policy Architects International; Ethan Kapstein, University of Minnesota; Michael Klare, Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies; Andrew Mack, Australian National University; Abdel Monem Said Aly, Center for Political and Strategic Studies, Cairo; Janne Nolan, Brookings Institution; Andrew Ross, Naval War College; Gerald Segal, International Institute for Strategic Studies; and Gerald Steinberg, Bar-Ilan University, Israel. Book Russia s New Ground Forces

Download or read book Russia s New Ground Forces written by Igor Sutyagin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Whitehall Paper provides an in-depth analysis of Russia’s Ground Forces, including airborne and naval troops. It examines their role in Russian foreign policy, reforms to units’ equipment and operational roles, performance during combat operations against Ukraine, and current unit deployment locations and purposes in the Central, Southern and Western Military Districts. Russia perceives itself as operating from a position of weakness and surrounded by superior NATO forces. It is pursuing a programme of military reform, both in terms of equipment and structures. The Russian Ground Forces are being geared towards fighting in aggressive, short, sharp and complex operations into enemy territory, as well as being streamlined to increase readiness levels and deployability at short notice. However, operations against Ukraine have required force generation efforts from almost every Russian Ground Forces formation, including those in the Far East, which is evidence that the Kremlin’s ability to sustain even a moderate tempo of operations in the medium term is limited. Furthermore, chronic undermanning and morale issues remain, which will be exacerbated by the political decision to re-establish division-scale formations. In addition, Western sanctions and Russia’s difficult economic situation are severely hampering efforts to extend equipment reforms across the whole force. Russian Ground Forces should not be seen by the West as an unstoppable colossus. However, the West must not ignore the unmistakable Russian efforts to prepare for offensive, high-tempo operations against NATO, and the formidable political will that will use them if given the opportunity.

Book Defence Industries in the 21st Century

Download or read book Defence Industries in the 21st Century written by Çağlar Kurç and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defence Industries in the 21st Century explores the transformation in the global defence industrial production through examining the interaction between international and domestic factors. With the global defence industry and arms market likely continue to expand and mature, the ways in which this progression could influence international politics remain obscure. In practice, as the contents of this book show, the defence industrial bases and arms export policies of emerging states display significant variance. This variance is the result of a unique balance between domestic and international factors that has shaped the defence industrialisation behaviour and policies of the less industrialised states. One of the most important conclusions of the book is that the interplay between domestic and international factors clearly influences the variation in the emerging states’ defence industrialisation policies, as well as their success or failure. While international factors create opportunities, they also limit the options available to emerging economies. Domestic factors also play an important role by shaping the policy choices of the states’ decision makers. Exploring the balance between international and domestic factors and the ways in which they influence defence industrialisation in emerging states, Defence Industries in the 21st Century will be of great interest to scholars of Defence Industries, Arms Manufacturing, and Defence, Strategic and Security Studies more generally. The chapters were originally published in Defence Studies, Comparative Strategy and All Azimuth.

Book Ethical Dilemmas in the Global Defense Industry

Download or read book Ethical Dilemmas in the Global Defense Industry written by Daniel Schoeni and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defense industry develops, produces, and sells weapons that cause great harm. It operates at the intersection of the public and private sectors, with increased reliance on technology companies. Although such firms exist primarily to serve their host states, they routinely interact with foreign legal systems and diverse cultures. This context creates unique ethical challenges. That being the case, is the defense industry ethically defensible? How should it be regulated? How should it respond to worrisome technological developments such as autonomous weapons systems? How should business be conducted in countries where bribery is the norm? To what extent can this industry's intrinsic ethical problems be overcome? This book addresses such questions, bringing together the diverse perspectives of scholars and practitioners from academia, government service, the military, and the private sector. It aims to inform a discussion about the moral and legal challenges facing the global defense industry and to introduce solutions that are innovative, effective, and practical.
