Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book offers an extensive legal analysis-grounded in public, EU, and international law-of arms trade regulation, integrated with insights drawn from international relations. The sale of weapons and related technologies is, globally, one of the most politically controversial and ethically contentious forms of commerce. Intimately connected with sustaining repressive governments and violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, arms exports are also a central element in the economic and strategic policies of the governments of all large industrial states. They have also been the source of abundant corruption, and of serious challenges to the norms and effectiveness of constitutional accountability in democratic states. On paper, the arms trade is heavily regulated: national legislation and international treaties are in place which purport to prohibit certain transactions and limit others. Yet despite its importance, legal and international relations scholarship on the subject has been surprisingly limited. This book fills this gap in the literature by examining and comparing the export control regimes of eight leading nations - USA, Russia, the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, China, and India - with chapters contributed by leading experts in the field of law and international relations.

Book Arms Transfers under Nixon

Download or read book Arms Transfers under Nixon written by Lewis Sorley and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model of policy analysis, Arms Transfers under Nixon provides a lucid and lively demonstration of how the Nixon administration combined skillful diplomacy and the adroit use of arms transfers to bring about a remarkable series of American foreign policy achievements. The Middle East provides the most dramatic example. Here, the Arab-Israeli military balance was stabilized, Egypt was persuaded and enabled to forsake its heavy dependence upon the Soviet Union, conditions favorable to peace negotiations were arranged, and important interim agreements were brokered by the United States. In the Persian Gulf, the promotion of Iran and Saudi Arabia as effective guarantors of regional stability in the wake of British withdrawal, and maintaining the pro-Western orientation of these governments, are shown to have been essential to crucial United States and Western interests. The dramatic reversal with the collapse of the Shah's government is assessed, as are the causes of that post-Nixon debacle. The battles that accompanied the administration's initiatives—battles with hostile nations, with allies, with the Congress, and even within the administration—and the diplomatic and political moves by which opposition was overcome provide the stuff of an exciting and instructive narrative.

Book A System Dynamics Approach to Modeling the U S Arms Transfer Process

Download or read book A System Dynamics Approach to Modeling the U S Arms Transfer Process written by Mark Edward Nickell and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transfer of arms between countries plays a significant role in the political, economic, and military affairs of the entire world, and is, consequently, subject to constant criticism and review from many quarters. Because of the complexity of the relationships in, and the diversity of opinion about arms transfers, a concise policy which will satisfy everyone is virtually impossible to devise. This thesis is an attempt to bring together all of the significant variables concerning the arms transfer system, with particular emphasis on the welfare of United States' national interests. While this model will not be able to produce policies which will keep all interested parties satisfied, it should depict the consequences of arms transfer decisions in terms of the major variables. The model will also facilitate the examination of policies such as the dollar ceiling on sales in terms of impact on the strategic position and economy of the United States.

Book The Arms Trade Treaty A Commentary

Download or read book The Arms Trade Treaty A Commentary written by Andrew Clapham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations Arms Trade Treaty became binding international law in late 2014, and although the text of the treaty is a relatively concise framework for assessing whether to authorize or deny proposed conventional weapons transfers by States Parties, there exists controversy as to the meaning of certain key provisions. Furthermore, the treaty requires a national regulatory body to authorize proposed transfers of conventional weapons covered by the treaty, but does not detail how such a body should be established and how it should effectively function. The Arms Trade Treaty: A Commentary explains in detail each of the treaty provisions, the parameters for prohibitions or the denial of transfers, international cooperation and assistance, and implementation obligations and mechanisms. As states ratify and implement the Treaty over the next few years, the commentary provides invaluable guidance to government officials, commentators, and scholars on the meaning of its contentious provisions. This volume describes in detail which weapons are covered by the treaty and explains the different forms of transfer that the Arms Trade Treaty regulates. It covers international human rights, trade, disarmament, humanitarian law, criminal law, and state-to-state use of force, as well as the application of the treaty to non-state actors.
