Book excerpt: This volume identifies the pattern of military spending in the Southeast Asian region over the past ten to fifteen years and provides explanations for the variations in spending rates. Two overview essays evaluate the role of threat perceptions and systemic variables on the shaping of defence spending while a third examines the methodological problems involved in assessing defence expenditures. In the case studies that follow, eight Southeast Asian countries are looked at systematically to see how their heterogeneous defence spending patterns are shaped by factors such as the geopolitical environment, the sense of threat and vulnerability, the decision-making structures, the military procurement patterns, and external affiliations.

Download or read book The Arms Race in Asia written by Andrew T.H. Tan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic examination of the emerging arms race in Asia. The global trade in arms is to a large degree underpinned by the strong demand for arms in Asia and the Middle East, the two largest arms export markets in the world. Of these two regions Asia has become particularly significant, led by the emergence of China and India as major powers. It is therefore not surprising that the rapid military modernisation in Asia, accompanied by significant increases in the size and sophistication of armed forces, has generated attention as to its trends, key characteristics, causes and implications. This phenomenon, which has become evident since the end of the Cold War, has also been widely described as an Asian 'arms race'. This book evaluates the key conceptual ideas which can shed light on this phenomenon, as well as examining the complex mix of internal, external and technological factors that have led to its emergence. The volume explores the way in which the arms race is leading ultimately to three distinctive blocs in the emerging geostrategic landscape: a loose bloc of US allies in the region; a counter-bloc of potential US adversaries; and a neutral bloc of states with industrial age armed forces whose allegiances will vary according to circumstances and geostrategic developments. The Arms Race in Asia concludes that if the emerging arms race is left unchecked, it is likely that Asia will increasingly become a region of instability, marked by conflicts and interstate wars. The book will be of great interest to students of Asian politics, strategic studies, defence studies, security studies and IR in general.

Book Military Modernisation in Southeast Asia after the Cold War

Download or read book Military Modernisation in Southeast Asia after the Cold War written by Shang-Su Wu and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asian countries represent a wide range of approaches to military modernisation due to their great diversity in politics, economies, geography and other factors. Bounded by the Pacific and Indian Oceans and located between China and India is the setting for the geostrategic impacts of military modernisation in Southeast Asian countries. Differing from previous research focused on military acquisition, this book additionally covers retention of assets and carefully examines the ageing issues that affect readiness and capabilities. In doing so, it provides a comprehensive view of military modernisation. This book also compares each country’s situation in the region in terms of military strength and security challenges to elaborate on the geostrategic impacts of military modernisation. The ten cases of military modernisation in the post-Cold War context provide rich content for readers to explore the evolution of military modernisation in developing countries after 1991. This book sheds light on security studies of Southeast Asia and is a useful resource for academic researchers, policy-makers and defence practitioners.

Book Security Arms Control and Defence Restructuring in East Asia

Download or read book Security Arms Control and Defence Restructuring in East Asia written by Bjørn Møller and published by Dartmouth Publishing Company. This book was released on 1998 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text examines arms control and defence restructuring in East Asia. It explores Western misconceptions of Asia and provides a survey of security and defence political trends in Asia. Asia has been the subject of heated debates in the west, and among the disputed issues are: whether the west is heading for a confrontation with the rest, ie an alliance between the confucian and Islamic civilizations - a clash of civilizations; does the lack of international organizations in Asia imply that the region is a raw international anarchy, or are there functional substitutes at work; are Asian notions fundamentally bellicose, or at least more inclined to use force than the west; should the west be concerned with the apparent arms build-up in parts of Asia; and if so, is the appropriate western response a compensatory build-up of arms, accompanied by the adoption of counter-proliferation strategies?
