Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean War (1950?53) began as a conflict between North Korea and South Korea and eventually involved the United States and nineteen other nations. An estimated three million people lost their lives during the war. For Americans who think that only GIs and their United Nations contingent comrades fought effectively, The Korean War will be a surprising introduction to the valor and sacrifice of the South Korean army. This comprehensive view of the war from the South Korean perspective has not been previously available in English translation.øThe Korean War comprises three volumes. Volume 3 follows the final course of the war from fighting to cease-fire negotiations and the opening of truce talks. The establishment of the demilitarized zone, the end product of the armistice agreement, and the start of the cease-fire structure are described in detail. The volume concludes with an examination of the Political Conference held in Geneva, which sought a peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula.

  • Pages : 37 pages

Book excerpt: The Korean War, which lasted from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953, was a conflict between North and South Korea. It began when North Korea invaded South Korea after a series of border battles and uprisings in the South. The United Nations supported South Korea, with the United States as its primary backer, while North Korea received support from China and the Soviet Union. On July 27, 1953, the war ended with an armistice. After Japan's surrender to the Allies on August 15, 1945, at the end of World War II, Korea, which had been under Japanese rule for 35 years, was divided along the 38th parallel by the United States and the Soviet Union. This division led to the establishment of two sovereign entities in 1948: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, led by the communist ruler Kim Il-sung, and the Republic of Korea in the south, led by the authoritarian Syngman Rhee. Both claimed to be the legitimate authority for all of Korea and rejected the border as a long-term solution. The Korean War began when troops from the North Korean People's Army crossed the border into South Korea. In response, the UN Security Council declared it an invasion and authorized the formation of a UN Command to repel the North Korean forces. The UN forces, primarily composed of US troops, launched a daring counteroffensive from Incheon in September 1950, cutting off the North Korean troops and forcing them to retreat. However, Chinese forces from the People's Volunteer Army joined the war effort in October 1950, leading to a UN withdrawal from North Korea. Chinese troops remained stationed in North Korea, and the conflict continued with various offensives until an armistice was reached in July 1953.

  • Author : Wada Haruki

Download or read book The Korean War written by Wada Haruki and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic history of the Korean War—from its origins through the armistice—is now available in a paperback edition including a substantive introduction that considers the heightened danger of a new Northeast Asian war as Trump and Kim Jong-un escalate their rhetoric. Wada Haruki, one of the world’s leading scholars of the war, draws on archival and other primary sources in Russia, China, the United States, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan to provide the first full understanding of the Korean War as an international conflict from the perspective of all the actors involved. Wada traces the North Korean invasion of South Korea in riveting detail, providing new insights into the behavior of Kim Il Sung and Syngman Rhee. He also provides new insights into the behavior of Communist leaders in Korea, China, Russia, Eastern Europe, and their rivals in other nations. He traces the course of the war from its origins in the North and South Korean leaders’ failed attempts to unify their country by force, ultimately escalating into a Sino-American war on the Korean Peninsula. Although sixty-five years have passed since the armistice, the Korean conflict has never really ended. Tensions remain high on the peninsula as Washington and Pyongyang, as well as Seoul and Pyongyang, continue to face off. It is even more timely now to address the origins of the Korean War, the nature of the confrontation, and the ways in which it affects the geopolitical landscape of Northeast Asia and the Pacific region. With his unmatched ability to draw on sources from every country involved, Wada paints a rich and full portrait of a conflict that continues to generate controversy.
