Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1950, when he commissioned the first edition of The Armed Forces Officer, Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall told its author, S.L.A. Marshall, that "American military officers, of whatever service, should share common ground ethically and morally." In this new edition, the authors methodically explore that common ground, reflecting on the basics of the Profession of Arms, and the officer's special place and distinctive obligations within that profession and especially to the Constitution.

Book Advising Chiang s Army

Download or read book Advising Chiang s Army written by Stephen L. Wilson and published by Hillcrest Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Phil Saunders was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1942. After receiving further training at Fort Benning and serving as a training officer at Camp Wheeler, he was assigned as a combat liaison officer with Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist army in China. He arrived in the China-Burma-India theater in the fall of 1943 and soon discovered the Chinese soldiers were underfed, underpaid, unprepared for combat, and reluctant to engage the Japanese. 'Advising Chiang's Army' details Phil's two years spent in China and describes how the troops he worked with gradually became an effective fighting force, shifted from defensive to offensive combat, and ultimately defeated the enemy. The book also recounts his post-war career in state politics and with the National Labor Relations Board."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: An exciting series of adventures in a far away time and place a millennium from now. On a distant planet with three moons there's action, romance, suspense, and the lives of alien inhabitants to read about and learn from. This is no ordinary sci-fi, but an entire study of history, sociology, and military conflicts with the added ingredients of morality included throughout. What happened to them, and why, and how they managed to survive by coping with anything and everything that happened to them. This first book of a series presents thirty fascinating tales of imaginative and thought provoking reading. Each tale gives the lives and interactions of many interesting characters, more than a few of whom the reader will find something in common with. These capture the essence of what the true meanings of life could and should be here on our own Planet Earth. Science fiction told in the highly styled manner of vigorous vignettes, each a means to an end. Entertaining and readable, with just enough sophistication to keep it all memorable, for a millennium to come.

Book The Labour Hercules The Irish Citizen Army and Irish Republicanism 1913 23

Download or read book The Labour Hercules The Irish Citizen Army and Irish Republicanism 1913 23 written by Jeffrey Leddin and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish Citizen Army (ICA) was born from the Dublin Lockout of 1913, when industrialist William Martin Murphy ‘locked out’ workers who refused to resign from the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union, sparking one of the most dramatic industrial disputes in Irish history. Faced with threats of police brutality in response to the strike, James Connolly, James Larkin and Jack White established the ICA in the winter of 1913. By the end of March 1914, the ICA espoused republican ideology and that the ownership of Ireland was ‘vested of right in the people of Ireland’. The ICA was in the process of being totally transformed, going on to provide significant support to the IRA during the 1916 Rising. Despite Connolly’s execution and the internment of many ICA members, the ICA reorganised in 1917, subsequently developing networks for arms importation and ‘intelligence’, and later providing operative support for the War of Independence in Dublin. The most extensive survey of the movement to date, The ‘Labour Hercules’ explores the ICA’s evolution into a republican army and its legacy to the present day.
