Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenia's Ordeal: A Sketch of the Main Features of the History of Armenia; An Inside Account of the Work of American Missionaries Among Armenians, and Its Ruinous Effect; And a General Review of the Armenian Question The name of Truth is applauded by all, but Truth it self is very disagreeable and unwelcome to many. Know ing this, I have resolved to cling fast to the truth, to say nothing but the truth, and to say a good deal of the truth that I know in relation to my subject, unmindful of its consequences. The Turkish proverb says He that will speak truth shall have a hole in his head. It is risky sometimes to speak truth. But what do I risk except myself and what am I in comparison with the sacred cause for which I come forth to speak Q The sa cred cause of my martyred nation demands of me to speak out, and to speak the truth for the best interests and the only hope of my people lie in the revelation of the truth. Therefore I must speak the truth at all hazards. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Armenia Australia the Great War

Download or read book Armenia Australia the Great War written by Vicken Babkenian and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Armenian Genocide began on 24 April 1915 as the Anzacs were preparing to land on Gallipoli. Australian troops witnessed the Armenians' ordeal, rescuing victims in Palestine and in Mesopotamia, and as Australian civilians learned of the massacres they became involved in alleviating their distress. Stanley Savige, Isobel Hutton, Cecilia John, James Cresswell, Edith Glanville, Jessie Webb, among others, became the first of Australia's humanitarian heroes. Even after the war ended, they tirelessly continued to work for decades supporting survivors and orphans. Until now their stories have lain neglected in the pages of parish newspapers and defunct charities' newsletters. After 1945 many Armenians began to migrate to Australia. And now, with 50,000 Armenian-Australians sharing direct family links with the Genocide, this has truly become an Australian story."--Back cover.

Download or read book The Resistance Network written by Khatchig Mouradian and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resistance Network is the history of an underground network of humanitarians, missionaries, and diplomats in Ottoman Syria who helped save the lives of thousands during the Armenian Genocide. Khatchig Mouradian challenges depictions of Armenians as passive victims of violence and subjects of humanitarianism, demonstrating the key role they played in organizing a humanitarian resistance against the destruction of their people. Piecing together hundreds of accounts, official documents, and missionary records, Mouradian presents a social history of genocide and resistance in wartime Aleppo and a network of transit and concentration camps stretching from Bab to Ras ul-Ain and Der Zor. He ultimately argues that, despite the violent and systematic mechanisms of control and destruction in the cities, concentration camps, and massacre sites in this region, the genocide of the Armenians did not progress unhindered—unarmed resistance proved an important factor in saving countless lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American schools have always been locally created and controlled. But ever since the Title I program in 1965 appropriated nearly one billion dollars for public schools, federal money and programs have been influencing every school in America. What has been accomplished in this extraordinary assertion of federal influence? What hasn't? Why not? With incisive clarity and wit, David Cohen and Susan Moffitt argue that enormous gaps existed between policies and programs, and the real-world practices that they attempted to change. Learning and teaching are complicated and mysterious. So the means to achieve admirable goals are uncertain, and difficult to develop and sustain, particularly when teachers get little help to cope with the blizzard of new programs, new slogans, new tests, and new rules. Ironically, as the authors observe, the least experienced and least well-trained teachers are often in the most needy schools, so federal support is compromised by the inequality it is intended to ameliorate. If new policies and programs don't include means to create the capability they require, they cannot succeed. We don't know what we need to enable states, school systems, schools, teachers, and students to use the resources that programs offer. The trouble with standards-based reform is that standards and tests still don't teach you how to teach.

Book United States Policy Toward the Armenian Question and the Armenian Genocide

Download or read book United States Policy Toward the Armenian Question and the Armenian Genocide written by S. Payaslian and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive analysis of U.S. policy toward the Armenian Question and the Armenian Genocide focuses on the important role big business played in keeping the United States from playing a more active role in opposing the genocide, notwithstanding broad public opinion calling for greater action. Business interests feared antagonizing the Turkish leaders by too much of an intervention on behalf of the Armenians. It surveys the historical evolution of U.S. policy toward the Ottoman Empire since the early nineteenth century and examines the extent to which the missionary community, commercial interests, and international economic and geopolitical competitions shaped U.S. policy during the administrations of William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson.

Book Looking Backward Moving Forward

Download or read book Looking Backward Moving Forward written by Richard G. Hovannisian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades separating our new century from the Armenian Genocide, the prototype of modern-day nation-killings, have fundamentally changed the political composition of the region. Virtually no Armenians remain on their historic territories in what is today eastern Turkey. The Armenian people have been scattered about the world. And a small independent republic has come to replace the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, which was all that was left of the homeland as the result of Turkish invasion and Bolshevik collusion in 1920. One element has remained constant. Notwithstanding the eloquent, compelling evidence housed in the United States National Archives and repositories around the world, successive Turkish governments have denied that the predecessor Young Turk regime committed genocide, and, like the Nazis who followed their example, sought aggressively to deflect blame by accusing the victims themselves. This volume argues that the time has come for Turkey to reassess the propriety of its approach, and to begin the process that will allow it move into a post-genocide era. The work includes "Genocide: An Agenda for Action," Gijs M. de Vries; "Determinants of the Armenian Genocide," Donald Bloxham; "Looking Backward and Forward," Joyce Apsel; "The United States Response to the Armenian Genocide," Simon Payaslian; "The League of Nations and the Reclamation of Armenian Genocide Survivors," Vahram L. Shemmassian; "Raphael Lemkin and the Armenian Genocide," Steven L. Jacobs; "Reconstructing Turkish Historiography of the Armenian Massacres and Deaths of 1915," Fatma Muge Go;cek; "Bitter-Sweet Memories; "The Armenian Genocide and International Law," Joe Verhoeven; "New Directions in Literary Response to the Armenian Genocide," Rubina Peroomian; "Denial and Free Speech," Henry C. Theriault; "Healing and Reconciliation," Ervin Staub; "State and Nation," Raffi K. Hovannisian.
