Book The Armenians in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Armenians in America Classic Reprint written by M. Vartan Malcom and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Armenians in America It was the lack of a handy book on the subject of the Armenians in America which first induced me to undertake the preparation of this volume. My original intention contemplated a larger edition, containing more extended historical and statistical records. But the sudden cessation of the war and the consequent rise of great national and economic questions, particularly those touching the Armenian people, have made it advisable not to wait any longer. The primary object of this book, as indicated by its title, is to present a sketch of the history, life and activities of the Armenians in the United States. Circumstances, however, have incidentally added a greater importance to it. Those who are competent to judge and speak of the Armenians have described them as "The Anglo-Saxons of the East." They are unanimous in their belief that these people are not only one of the superior races in Southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, but by far the most fit and capable of self-government. Book Armenia and the Armenians

Download or read book Armenia and the Armenians written by Kevork Aslan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenia and the Armenians: From the Earliest Times Until the Great War (1914) In 1908 the author published at Paris, in the French language, an octavo volume of some 500 pages entitled "Etudes Historiques sur le Peuple Armenien," covering the history of Armenia from the earliest times to the eleventh century. This edition is now out of print. Subsequently there was also published in French a condensed edition of the same work, carrying the story, however, from the earliest times down to the present day. The first edition of this smaller volume having been exhausted a new and revised edition has been prepared for publication in French and it has been thought appropriate to issue contemporaneously therewith an English translation. The author ventures to express the hope that the English edition of his work will meet with the same favor that has been accorded the original French text. In issuing this English edition it has been deemed necessary, in quite a number of instances, to depart from the French transliteration of Armenian, Persian and other foreign names. The phonetic value of certain English letters differs somewhat from the sound which the French associate with the same character and this difference has made it necessary to modify the transliteration of the Oriental original. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenia and Her People: Or the Story of Armenia by an Armenian I was born January 20, 1853, in a suburb of Antioch; twelfth child and youngest son of a family of nine boys and four girls, and therefore considered the Joseph of the fam ily, and as a small boy went to a missionary school with my elder brothers. My father was a banker and merchant. His partner in the former business was Mr. Edward Barker, English consul at Aleppo; in the latter a Greek, Jabra An taki, their trafiic being in raw silk, for which and for silk worms Antioch is a great center. Millions of dollars passed through his hands, and he was considered one Of the wealth iest men in the city. A common saying was, If you can drain the Mediterranean dry, you can drain Filian's money dry. This saying roused the cupidity of the local governor; he imprisoned my father, and proposed to torture and kill him, and confiscate his property. Americans would relish living under this sort of government. His partner, the consul, saved him, however, and won his undying gratitude; and when Mr. Barker died, my father gave his son a part of his own orchard for a burial ground. The son erected a beautiful monument there, which still stands, the ground being owned by my brother, Moses Filian. When I was fourteen or fifteen, my father lost all his money through the failure of others became hopelessly bankrupt, and was too Old to regain hls position, and sank into a poor and broken-hearted Old man: his Mediterranean was not inexhaustible. He Often patted me and said, My dear boy, I am sorry - I helped your brothers and gave them good educations, and I meant to do the same by you; but I cannot, for I am too poor. You will have to make your own way. He was a devoted friend Of education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
