Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenia and Its People Having recently arrived in America I have written this little book with not a little care, in a language that is foreign to me, and I need not state the difficulty I have had in adequately expressing myself in English. I have set forth in the following pages a brief sketch of the Armenian country and the mode of life therein, from social and religious points of view, as the result of my own experience during a life-long residence in Turkey and have introduced under the guise of fiction a true story about a brave Armenian young lady on which I have laid considerable stress. Book The Armenians in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Armenians in America Classic Reprint written by M. Vartan Malcom and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Armenians in America It was the lack of a handy book on the subject of the Armenians in America which first induced me to undertake the preparation of this volume. My original intention contemplated a larger edition, containing more extended historical and statistical records. But the sudden cessation of the war and the consequent rise of great national and economic questions, particularly those touching the Armenian people, have made it advisable not to wait any longer. The primary object of this book, as indicated by its title, is to present a sketch of the history, life and activities of the Armenians in the United States. Circumstances, however, have incidentally added a greater importance to it. Those who are competent to judge and speak of the Armenians have described them as "The Anglo-Saxons of the East." They are unanimous in their belief that these people are not only one of the superior races in Southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, but by far the most fit and capable of self-government. Book Armenia and Her People

Download or read book Armenia and Her People written by George H. Filian and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenia and Her People: Or the Story of Armenia by an Armenian The problem of Armenia and the Turkish atrocities there, is in the very forefront of the world's burning questions at the present time. In every civilized land it is ranked alongside their own pressing local issues; everywhere there is not only sympathy and indignation, but a feeling of real responsibility. We are a group of Christian nations, and the first Christian nation is being exterminated. Within a few months the unspeakable Turks and barbarous Kurds destroyed more than a thousand villages and towns, murdered a hundred thousand Armenian Christians, - men, women, and innocent children, - and left 500,000 others without homes, clothing, or food, thousands of women shamefully defiled, and thousands of men put to horrible tortures. Dying in the streets, in the fields, on the mountains; dying of hunger, of cold, of storm, and of diseases bred of all these; dying of broken hearts and despair, even more, of shame and mental torture. Yet all these Armenians who thus suffered and were driven forth to starve and die like deserted animals, were absolutely peaceable, - indeed, they were totally unarmed and could not have been otherwise if they wished, - perfectly respectable, most of them comfortably off, and some of them rich. One who was last week a banker is today a beggar; yesterday a merchant, to-day a tramp. Why? For the main reason that he is a Christian, and the Sultan has resolved to have no more Christians in his dominion; the doom of Islamism is hanging over their heads. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenia: Its Present Crisis and Past History While in Cairo last April, during my trip around the world, I received a letter from the editor of one of our American daily papers, requesting me to go into Armenia, and write from the ground, for his journal, an account of the condition of affairs that existed among this persecuted people, as contradictory reports had been published in America. This little work, that I now offer to the public, is the result of my observations and experiences during a two months' stay in the Ottoman Empire. I am indebted to a number of persons for many of the facts contained in this volume; but as, in every case, information was given me with the distinct understanding that the names of my informants should not be used, I am prevented from giving due credit to these heroic men and women, whose noble work for the suffering Armenians would be greatly hindered if word reached the Turkish officials that they were expressing through the American press their knowledge of the state of affairs in Armenia. In the preparation of the historical portion of the book, I was fortunate in having the aid of an Armenian professor of Armenian history in Constantinople. Know ing this, I have resolved to cling fast to the truth, to say nothing but the truth, and to say a good deal of the truth that I know in relation to my subject, unmindful of its consequences. The Turkish proverb says He that will speak truth shall have a hole in his head. It is risky sometimes to speak truth. But what do I risk except myself and what am I in comparison with the sacred cause for which I come forth to speak Q The sa cred cause of my martyred nation demands of me to speak out, and to speak the truth for the best interests and the only hope of my people lie in the revelation of the truth.
