Book Forum f r osteurop ische Ideen und Zeitgeschichte

Download or read book Forum f r osteurop ische Ideen und Zeitgeschichte written by Leonid Luks and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1997, FORUM has been an integral part of the landscape of European studies. In addition to contemporary history, it offers insights into the history of ideas and reviews books on Central and Eastern European history. It offers more than just history—for instance, interdisciplinary discussions by political scientists, literary, legal, and economic scholars, and philosophers. FORUM sees itself as a bridge between East and West. Through the translation and publication of texts and contributions from Russian, Polish, and Czech researchers, it offers the Western reader access to the scholarly discourse of Eastern Europe. This issue examines the fate of organized religion under state socialism. While totalitarianism means a rupture in the traditional idea of man, the church stands for continuity. That is why totalitarian rulers quest to expel the church from public perception and, at the same time, try to usurp the church from within. This volume is dedicated to investigating how this process took place in the countries of the former Soviet bloc.

Book The Un Polish Poland 1989 and the Illusion of Regained Historical Continuity

Download or read book The Un Polish Poland 1989 and the Illusion of Regained Historical Continuity written by Tomasz Kamusella and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses historical continuities and discontinuities between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, interwar Poland, the Polish People’s Republic, and contemporary Poland. The year 1989 is seen as a clear point-break that allowed the Poles and their country to regain a ‘natural historical continuity’ with the ‘Second Republic,’ as interwar Poland is commonly referred to in the current Polish national master narrative. In this pattern of thinking about the past, Poland-Lithuania (nowadays roughly coterminous with Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia’s Kaliningrad Region and Ukraine) is seen as the ‘First Republic.’ However, in spite of this ‘politics of memory’ (Geschichtspolitik) – regarding its borders, institutions, law, language, or ethnic and social makeup – present-day Poland, in reality, is the direct successor to and the continuation of communist Poland. Ironically, today’s Poland is very different, in all the aforementioned aspects, from the First and Second Republics. Hence, contemporary Poland is quite un-Polish, indeed, from the perspective of Polishness defined as a historical (that is, legal, social, cultural, ethnic and political) continuity of Poland-Lithuania and interwar Poland.

Book Vilnius between Nations 1795 2000

Download or read book Vilnius between Nations 1795 2000 written by Theodore R. Weeks and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inhabitants of Vilnius, the present-day capital of Lithuania, have spoken various languages and professed different religions while living together in relative harmony over the years. The city has played a significant role in the history and development of at least three separate cultures—Polish, Lithuanian, and Jewish—and until very recently, no single cultural-linguistic group composed the clear majority of its population. Vilnius between Nations, 1795–2000 is the first study to undertake a balanced assessment of this particularly diverse city. Theodore Weeks examines Vilnius as a physical entity where people lived, worked, and died; as the object of rhetorical struggles between disparate cultures; and as a space where the state attempted to legitimize a specific version of cultural politics through street names, monuments, and urban planning. In investigating these aspects, Weeks avoids promoting any one national narrative of the history of the city, while acknowledging the importance of national cultures and their opposing myths of the city's identity. The story of Vilnius as a multicultural city and the negotiations that allowed several national groups to inhabit a single urban space can provide lessons that are easily applied to other diverse cities. This study will appeal to scholars of Eastern Europe, urban studies, and multiculturalism, as well as general readers interested in the region.

Download or read book War Land on the Eastern Front written by Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-05-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War Land on the Eastern Front is a study of a hidden legacy of World War I: the experience of German soldiers on the Eastern front and the long-term effects of their encounter with Eastern Europe. It presents an 'anatomy of an occupation', charting the ambitions and realities of the new German military state there. Using hitherto neglected sources from both occupiers and occupied, official documents, propaganda, memoirs, and novels, it reveals how German views of the East changed during total war. New categories for viewing the East took root along with the idea of a German cultural mission in these supposed wastelands. After Germany's defeat, the Eastern front's 'lessons' were taken up by the Nazis, radicalized, and enacted when German armies returned to the East in World War II. Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius's persuasive and compelling study fills a yawning gap in the literature of the Great War.
