This book was released on 1994 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple- choice test battery administered to all applicants for active-duty and reserve enlistment in the United States Armed Services. In Addition, it is administered to approximately one million students each year as part of the Department of Defense (DoD) Student Testing Program. The battery consists of the ten subtests listed in Table 1. In addition, Verbal (VE)--which is the two subtests, Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC)-- is treated like a separate subtest in many analyses and applications. Various combinations of the subtest standard scores form composites that are used DoD and the Services for determining eligibility for enlistment and for classification into military occupations.

Book A Critical Analysis of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Administered to Community College Students Enrolled in Vocational Technical Courses

Download or read book A Critical Analysis of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Administered to Community College Students Enrolled in Vocational Technical Courses written by James C. Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In order to provide aptitude information for vocational place-ment used in all military services and to be used in the Department of Defense High School Testing Program, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) wlas developed. This instrument was designed specifically to be used in counseling high school students regarding military and civilian occupations and for aiding the military with selection, training, and assignment. This study involved an original sample of 157 volunteer students enrolled in one of four vocational programs at a community college. The groups were designated as: Heavy Equipment, Automotive, Electronics, and Industrial Electricity. Keith Kirkbride, Director of Vocational Programs for the Spokane Community Colleges, provided helpful assistance in obtaining useful student data for the study. The community college was interested in finding an assessment tool that would predict a student's success in a vocational program. The ASVAB was administered to each group and data were analyzed to determine the predictability of the ASVAB in this community college setting. Significant relationships were found between individual subtests of the ASVAB which identified three measurement areas: intelligence measures; achievement tests reflecting specific high school coursework, and vocational tests measuring first-hand experience in such areas as auto mechanics and electronics. The profiles constructed by regression equations to predict GPA were not significant within groups or for the ttotal sample. Also, these data were not effective in identifying students who withdrew from the programs. Several confounding variables were identified which suggest future research"--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard R. Gifford and Linda C. Wing Standardized testing has become a ubiquitous feature of American life. As a major source of information for reducing uncertainty in the alJocation of merit based educational, training, and employment opportunities, testing affects the life chances of individuals. Moreover, testing inOuences the way in which our societyjudgesitselfandprovides for ourcollective future. Test scores may determine a child's admission to lcindergarten and promotion to the fIrst grade. Most states award the high school diploma only ifa student has passed a minimum competency test. Major institutions of higher education typically require applicants to supplement their records of academic achievement with scores on college admissions tests. In the labor market, as a condition of employment or assignment to training programs, more and more employers are requiring workers to sit for personnel selection tests. Additionally, it has become commonplace to use test scores to calibrate our national sociopolitical condition and our capacity to compete with other countries in the global economy. In short, with increasing frequency and intensity, scores on examinations that purport to be objective and precise measures of individual knowledge, abilities, and potential are playing a critical role in the opportunity marketplace. Similarly, test scores are exercising growing influence in assessments of our social and economic institutions and in policy decisions about the relative invesunents that should be made in each. In all these instantiations, test scores are at the center of high-stakes decision making about the future of individuals and of the nation itself.

Book Study of the Department of Defense Student Testing Program

Download or read book Study of the Department of Defense Student Testing Program written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluates selected features of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Career Exploration Program (CEP) and its contributions to Navy recruiting. The ASVAB-CEP is a Department of Defense program created in 1968, operating in 12,598 high schools throughout the nation as of 2004. ASVAB-CEP data for all military services (1998-2004) were examined, along with previous studies and literature on the program. An online survey was developed and administered to Navy Recruiters-in-Charge (RINCs). Results show a steady decline of high school juniors and seniors tested, high schools tested, recruiter leads, and accessions. Survey results indicate that RINCs are generally positive toward the program as a source of leads and in gaining access to schools, but question the value in testing sophomores. Several recommendations are offered to improve the program. In addition, further research is recommended.
