Book Kriegsmarine Auxiliary Cruisers

Download or read book Kriegsmarine Auxiliary Cruisers written by Gordon Williamson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-20 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being relatively unknown compared to famous ships like Graf Spee or Bismarke, or the more famous U-boats, the Auxiliary Cruisers were immensely successful, not only in the number of enemy ships they sank, but in the resources which were tied up trying to track them down. The Royal Navy's auxiliary cruisers tended to be merchant vessels used to protect convoys from attack. The German Auxiliary Cruisers, however, heavily armed and usually carried torpedo tubes as well as guns and even sometimes their own aircraft. These ships were aggressive predators, searching the sea lanes for unsuspecting enemy merchants, and were not only capable of destroying enemy merchant ships, but also of defending themselves against well-armed enemy warships. This book looks at the specifications and designs of the 11 Auxiliary Cruisers, as well as their combat histories, their eventual fates, and the careers of some of the most famous commanders.

Book excerpt: Here at last is the true story of the merchant fleet during World War II, the non-fighting service in which 32,000 men died yet whose essential role has never been fully appreciated. The author, himself a member of the service from 1941-47, relates the stories of merchantmen and their crews with unique insight. From the early days of the war to the day of victory on the Rhine, through combined operations in the Mediterranean and at Normandy, the complete operation of the fleet is examined, with vivid accounts of the horrific losses undergone, the heroism of the crews and the sacrifices endured to ensure that Britain received its essential supplies of food, oil, and raw materials. Highly illustrated, this book will be absorbing for the war historian, maritime enthusiast and general reader alike.

Download or read book HMS Arawa written by Allan A. Murray and published by Men and Ships at War. This book was released on 2016-12-26 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Series 'Men and Ships at War' describes the service of a number of ships from the middle of the 20th Century. The connective thread of the Series is the family members of the author who served either aboard or alongside these ships during World War II. The Series includes the service of the ships HMS Arawa and HMA Ships Nepal, Mildura and Australia as well as the merchant vessels SS Iron Chieftain and Iron Knight. The latter two were sunk during the War by Japanese submarines. The three key protagonists are Bobby Forbes, his brother Arthur 'Dukesy' Forbes, and George Anderson. The Forbes brothers are paternal great uncles of the author and George Anderson is the maternal grandfather. Between them, they served in every ocean, against every foe and their sea time encompassed every year of the War. All three survived the War. This first book in the Series is a description of the service in early World War II of the armed merchant cruiser HMS Arawa with Bobby Forbes on board. No stranger to drama, for 15 years she transported passengers between Australasia and England amid financial collapses, corporate restructures, route changes and even a name change. At the outbreak of World War II, TSS Arawa was hastily converted to an armed merchant cruiser in Sydney, Australia. With a top speed of 28 kilometres/hour, no armour plating, seven 1898-vintage 6-inch guns with no central fire control system, and a crew of mainly Australian Navy Reservists, this unglamorous warship was dispatched to Hong Kong before serving in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Her two years of service saw HMS Arawa at the centre of a diplomatic incident between the United Kingdom and Japan; be offered as a sacrificial lamb to German surface raiders and warships hunting Allied merchant vessel convoys; and duel with German and Italian submarines and aircraft in the Battle of the Atlantic. This book tells for the first time the tale of each of these dramas and more. They are indicative of the experience of many of the armed merchant cruisers in World War II.

Book excerpt: A naval historian reveals the full story of the HMS Jervis Bay and the merchant ships that valiantly saved lives during the WWII Battle of the Atlantic. On November 5th, 1940, the thirty-eight merchant ships of Convoy HX84 were making their way across the North Atlantic, escorted by the armed cruiser HMS Jervis Bay. In mid-ocean, they were attacked by the German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer. Though the Jervis Bay charged at the enemy, she was hopelessly outgunned. Within twenty-two minutes, the ship was destroyed. Meanwhile, the merchantmen scattered under the cover of a smokescreen. But the radar-equipped Admiral Scheer was still capable of picking them off one at a time. Captain Hugh Pettigrew, commanding the highly armed Canadian Pacific cargo liner SS Beaverford, began a desperate game of hide and seek with the Scheer, which continued until the Beaverford was sunk with no survivors. Thanks to this sacrifice, thirty-three merchantmen were able to escape. Later the neutral flag Swedish freighter Stureholm, commanded by Captain Olander, picked up survivors from the Jervis Bay. While Jervis Bay’s Captain Edward Fegen was rightly awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery and sacrifice, the history books only mention the Beaverford and the Stureholm in passing. This thrilling book puts the record straight.

Book Cruisers and Battle Cruisers

Download or read book Cruisers and Battle Cruisers written by Eric W. Osborne and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast cruisers, the eyes of the fleet, were the standard-bearers of empire, the ultimate warships of gunboat diplomacy—no other vessel class was so well equipped to serve as both a working war machine and a projection of national might. Cruisers and Battle Cruisers explores the pivotal importance of cruiser-class ships to naval warfare and, in a wider scope, world politics. In vivid but accessible detail, it describes the milestones of cruiser design and deployment from mid-19th century development of steam-propelled, ironclads to the World War I introduction of battle cruisers; from the decisive naval engagements of World War II and the addition of missiles and computerized systems to the most recent developments. Readers will see how specific technological changes progressively increased the destructive power of cruisers and altered their combat roles, how design innovations altered the quality of life aboard ship, and how cruisers came to be called upon to serve a variety of noncombat roles in war and peace.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Defensively-Armed Merchant Ships and Submarine Warfare Much has happened since August, 1914. Old problems in new forms have arisen, and a further examination of them, in view of new developments, seems called for. I propose in the following pages shortly to recapitulate the evidence and the conclusions reached in the former paper, written, it will be noticed before the outbreak of the war, conclusions to which I fully adhere to add further evidence which has been acquired since that paper was written; and to discuss the unprecedented situation which has arisen in view of the German use of submarines as commerce destroyers. Book excerpt: This WWI naval history vividly tells the story of the Royal Navy’s Northern Blockade and the battles at sea that brought Germany to its knees. At the outbreak of World War I, Britain established a naval blockade that greatly diminished Germany’s access to trade and vital resources. The Northern Blockade brought the German economy to its knees and greatly diminished home front morale. Patrolling the inhospitable waters between Iceland and Scotland, the 10th Cruiser Squadron played a vital role in winning the war on the Western Front. At the same time, the Royal Navy successfully countered Germany’s attacks on British commerce, preventing much suffering in Britain. Drawing on numerous first-hand accounts, Historian Steve Dunn vividly chronicles this long-running battle at sea. Beginning with the blockade’s initial formation, he recounts the changes in strategy on both sides, including the use of converted liners and armed merchant vessels as warships. He also vividly describes the final destruction of German surface vessel commerce warfare, culminating in the hard-fought battle between the raider SMS Leopard and two British warships.
