Book Armchair Warriors

Download or read book Armchair Warriors written by Joel R. Davidson and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of public information and personal ideas, specifically ideas about war and the military over the last century. It examines the interplay between popular media coverage of the nation’s wars and the perceptions of ordinary Americans regarding military issues. Armchair Warriors begins with the premise that the press provided most Americans with their primary source of insight into the practical military problems confronting the United States. In a nation where military service was the exception rather than the rule, the public relied on news outlets to make sense of what war “really” was. Such articles and editorials not only celebrated the country’s successes in war, but also attempted to explain its setbacks, as well as the perils and opportunities that lay ahead. The American people responded to this abundance of information by taking an active role in the intellectual aspects of the nation’s military effort.Often encouraged by various media sources, ordinary citizens produced a wealth of proposals aimed at solving particular tactical or strategic conundrums. These armchair warriors often sidestepped the press, and sought to bring their ideas directly before those entrusted with directing U.S. armed forces.Together, the media accounts of military issues and the practical-minded suggestions from the masses constitute a heretofore unexamined nationaldialogue about one of the most important aspects of U.S. history.

Book Agent Oriented Information Systems

Download or read book Agent Oriented Information Systems written by Paolo Giorgini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-06-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thisproceedingsvolumeofthe5thAOISWorkshopisanopportunityforlooking back at ?ve years of organizing AOIS workshops. What did we achieve with the AOIS workshop series? Where were we ?ve years ago, where are we now? Did ourthemeimpactontheinformationsystems?eldinthewaythatwehadhoped for? AOIS workshops have taken place in Seattle, Heidelberg, Stockholm, Austin, Montr ́ eal, Interlaken, Toronto, Bologna, Melbourne, and Chicago, always in c- junction with a major conference on either multiagent systems in arti?cial - telligence (AI/MAS) or information systems (IS). We have tried to innovate in holding these workshops as biconference events (each year AOIS held two wo- shop events, one at an AI/MAS conference and one at an IS conference), as well as using the AOIS web site as a medium for communication among researchers. So, certainly, we have reached a wide audience of researchers around the world from both the AI/MAS and IS communities. But did we also manage to build up a dedicated AOIS community? Five years ago, we wrote: “Agent concepts could fundamentally alter the nature of information systems of the future, and how we build them, much like structured analysis, ER modeling, and Object-Orientation has precipitated fundamental changes in IS practice. ” Of course, a period of ?ve years is too short for evaluating the success or failure of a new scienti?c paradigm. But still we may observe that while most IS conferences meanwhile list agents as one of their many preferred topics, agent-orientation is generally not considered to be a fundamental IS paradigm.

Book Global Politics as if People Mattered

Download or read book Global Politics as if People Mattered written by Mary Ann Tétreault and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-16 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would international relations look like if our theories and analyses began with individuals, families, and communities instead of executives, nation-states, and militaries? After all, it is people who make up cities, states, and corporations, and it is their beliefs and behaviors that explain why some parts of the world seem so peaceful while others appear so violent, why some societies are so rich while others are so poor. Now in a fully updated and revised edition, this unique text on contemporary global politics begins with people, treating them as "social individuals" with free will and human agency even as they are limited and disciplined by rules and rulers. Offering a fresh approach to global politics, this dynamic author team trades perspectives with each other and with such eminent social theorists as Michel Foucault and Hannah Arendt to develop their resonant theme. Using practical examples as well as theory, the authors show students how they can take charge of their lives and the politics that affect them, even in the context of a vast global economy and impersonal international forces that sometimes seem out of control. Filled with idealism, yet firmly grounded in current realities, Global Politics as if People Mattered is a fresh take on the proper place and potential of individuals in world politics—front and center, actively engaged in a way of life that is as politically personal as it is politically powerful. This distinctive text, a perfect reading for lower-division politics courses, helps students to carve out their own political space in the contemporary global order.

Download or read book Warriors Seven written by Barney Sneiderman and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2006-09-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warriors Seven offers a fascinating collection of American commander "profiles" written in a lively and graphic style. The unique aspect of Dr. Sneiderman's approach is that each essay sketches the ironic twists of fate that befell these men at or near the peak of their careers. The subjects of this study include: Benedict Arnold, Andrew Jackson, Winfield Scott, Robert E. Lee, George Dewey, Billy Mitchell, and George Patton. These courageous leaders are successively featured in each of America's seven wars from 1775 to 1945: the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. Each entry highlights or focuses upon a single battle: Saratoga (1777), New Orleans (1815), Mexico City (1847), Malvern Hill (1862), Manila Bay (1898), St. Mihiel (1918), and Messina (1943). Each entry highlights the life and military career of each commander up to the moment of the featured battle, with a thread of continuity coursing through each chapter. For example, the essay on Andrew Jackson opens with a battle fought during the Revolutionary War that Jackson witnessed as a 13-year-old courier for the Continental Army. Twenty-seven original battlefield maps facilitate the reader's understanding of the momentous events described in these pages. Warriors Seven will be welcomed by anyone who appreciates gripping narrative military history leavened with a slice of historical irony. Barney Sneiderman served as a professor in the Faculty Law, University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Canada, from 1969 until illness prompted his retirement in 2006. He is the principal author of the acclaimed Canadian Medical Law: An Introduction for Physicians, Nurses, and other Health Care Professionals (3rd Edition, 2003, Carswell). The Connecticut native and former journalist is known for his lively and user-friendly writing style. Warriors Seven is a reflection of his longtime interest in American and European political and military history. He lives in Manitoba with his wife and children. PRAISE "Dr. Sneiderman has written a brilliant and fascinating book. . . . that shows how genius, resolve, dedication, opportunity, and hard work create great military leaders, but also how demons sometimes lurk in the hearts of famous men and dull their glory." - Noted historian Bevin Alexander

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unregulated technology threatens truth, democracy, and humanity itself... Following up on his groundbreaking book Digital is Destroying Everything, Army of Liars now unveils the sinister agenda of an army of liars, the digitally-driven bad actors seeking to destabilize the United States by eroding the very foundations of liberal democracy with a relentless barrage of fabricated narratives and poisonous, digitally promoted disinformation. Pulling no punches, Edwards identifies the culprits: social media platforms protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, audience targeting, real-time content recommendation, foreign state actors, and radical factions fueled by hate. Today’s social media has been weaponized by enemies of the United States and hate and discord are now the currency of thousands of anonymous “content providers.” Army of Liars unpacks how we got here, what exactly is wrong with digital enterprise, and how to go about fixing it so that humanity may survive even in an age of artificial intelligence and digital command and control. Should we implement an “engagement tax” on social media platforms and generative AI? These funds could be used to help fight off the worst types of disinformation and to help fund the efforts of content creators whose work has been scraped, stolen, and reconfigured by generative AI and large language models (LLMs). It’s a safe bet the tech giants won’t want to hear it. Army of Liars is designed to help humans not only survive in a digital age but to conquer digital and prosper in an age of truth in media.

Book Journalism in an Age of Terror

Download or read book Journalism in an Age of Terror written by John Lloyd and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-30 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The threat of terrorism and the increasing power of terrorist groups has prompted a rapid growth of the security services and changes in legislation, permitting the collection of communications data. This provides journalism with acute dilemmas. The media claims responsibility for holding power to account, yet cannot know more than superficial details about the newly empowered secret services. This book is the first to analyze, in the aftermath of the Snowden/NSA revelations, relations between two key institutions in the modern state: the intelligence services and the news media. It provides the answers to crucial questions including: how can power be held to account if one of the greatest state powers is secret? How far have the Snowden/NSA revelations damaged the activities of the secret services? And have governments lost all trust from journalists and the public?
