It describes testing opponents' strategies, through case studies of Texas and the SAT. It illustrates the profound media bias against testing. It acknowledges testing's limitations, and suggests how it can be improved. It defends testing by comparing it with its alternatives. Six-year-old Briar Damaj, a half Krasian boy in the tiny village of Bogton, is used to being tormented by his siblings, and the villagers who call him Mudboy. When an attack leaves him orphaned, Briar feels he has no choice but to flee into the demon-infested bog where chances of survival seem hopeless. Ragen, a Messenger and friend of Briar’s father, hunts for days through fetid swampland before giving the boy up for dead and retiring from his dangerous career. A decade later, Ragen receives news that Briar has survived against all odds, living alone in the wetlands like an animal. Unable to bear it, Ragen puts on his old armor and sets out for one last adventure to bring Briar home. A tale set between The Daylight War and The Skull Throne of Peter V. Brett’s internationally bestselling Demon Cycle series, Messenger’s Legacy can be enjoyed both as a standalone and part of the larger series, which has sold over 4M copies in 27 languages worldwide. Praise for Messenger’s Legacy: A great short story, and also a great lead-in to the fourth novel in the series, The Skull Throne. ... This series has my highest recommendation. A must-read.” — Civilian Reader “The amount of depth that Brett manages to get into his short stories and novellas never ceases to amaze me and Messenger’s Legacy is no exception [...] Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed getting stuck into Brett’s world and my only disappointment was that it ended so quickly.” — SFcrowsnest Friendship, love, bravery and survival against the odds are key themes in all of Peter’s work and you will find them weaved artistically within this novella – a wonderful addition to The Demon Cycle canon.” — Fantasy Faction

Book Women Creating Women

Download or read book Women Creating Women written by Patricia Boyle Haberstroh and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1996-02-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women Creating Women is a pioneering exploration of contemporary Irish women poets that should provide a frame of reference for all future discussion of this topic. Patricia Haberstroh focuses on five poets in particular, beginning with Eithne Strong and Nuala Nf Dhomhnaill, both of whom still write in the Irish language—each emphasizing the importance of the female perspective on the human experience. She then turns her attention to three of the best-known contemporary poets: Eavan Boland, the most highly esteemed; Medbh McGuckian, the most difficult and original; and Eilean Ni Chuilleanain, whose poems make some of the stronger statements about the need to balance a male with a female perspective to broaden the human vision. Drawing on a wide reading of the poets' works and extensive personal interviews with them, Haberstroh demonstrates the emergence of a more self-conscious and self-confident female poet who is ready to rewrite the story of Irish women and redefine and explore female identity and the image of women in Irish history, culture, and literature. Her final chapter explores Irish women's poetry since 1980. This book is a celebration of poets, poetry, and Ireland that allows the reader to discover the works of these fine poets.

Book A New History of War Reporting

Download or read book A New History of War Reporting written by Kevin Williams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-23 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a fresh look at the history of war reporting to understand how new technology, new ways of waging war and new media conditions are changing the role and work of today’s war correspondent. Focussing on the mechanics of war reporting and the logistical and institutional pressures on correspondents, the book further examines the role of war propaganda, accreditation and news management in shaping the evolution of the specialism. Previously neglected conflicts and correspondents are reclaimed and wars considered as key moments in the history of war reporting such as the Crimean War (1854-56) and the Great War (1914-18) are re-evaluated. The use of objectivity as the yardstick by which to assess the performance of war correspondents is questioned. The emphasis is instead placed on war as a messy business which confronts reporters and photographers with conditions that challenge the norms of professional practice. References to the ‘demise of the war correspondent’ have accompanied the growth of the specialism since the days of William Howard Russell, the so-called father of war reporting. This highlights the fragile nature of this sub-genre of journalism and emphasises that continuity as much as change characterises the work of the war correspondent. A thematically organised, historically rich introduction, this book is ideal for students of journalism, media and communication.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of the struggle to define womanhood in America, from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century “An intelligently provocative, vital reading experience. . . . This highly readable, inclusive, and deeply researched book will appeal to scholars of women and gender studies as well as anyone seeking to understand the historical patterns that misogyny has etched across every era of American culture.”—Kirkus Reviews “A comprehensive and lucid overview of the ongoing campaign to free women from ‘the tyranny of old notions.’”—Publishers Weekly What does it mean to be a “woman” in America? Award-winning gender and sexuality scholar Lillian Faderman traces the evolution of the meaning from Puritan ideas of God’s plan for women to the sexual revolution of the 1960s and its reversals to the impact of such recent events as #metoo, the appointment of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, the election of Kamala Harris as vice president, and the transgender movement. This wide-ranging 400-year history chronicles conflicts, retreats, defeats, and hard-won victories in both the private and the public sectors and shines a light on the often-overlooked battles of enslaved women and women leaders in tribal nations. Noting that every attempt to cement a particular definition of “woman” has been met with resistance, Faderman also shows that successful challenges to the status quo are often short-lived. As she underlines, the idea of womanhood in America continues to be contested.
