Book excerpt: Four years had passed since a massive asteroid collided with Earth and triggered an environmental disaster that obliterated nearly all forms of life. Monumental tsunamis demolished coastal cities worldwide, and a 3,600-mile-long fissure incessantly belched out sulfuric smoke that girdled Earth, enhancing and extending the asteroid-induced dust pall that caused a new ice age. In this forbidding world under an orange-tinged sky, small groups of humans managed to survive, as the first book in this trilogy, Ark: Asteroid Impact, describes. Amid crushed buildings buried in snow on the beaches of California, survivors at Halcyon pieced together the means to begin exploring the wounded world to see who else may remain. Other survivors they rescued included NORAD personnel marooned in Colorado. A Russian missile installation that intercepted their radio transmissions saw an opportunity to use thermonuclear weapons to assert world domination. On the anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, the canyons of the Central California coast rumbled and the sky erupted in a brilliant flash of light that jarred the American survivors from their sleep. But the younger Russians revolted, and repented?.

Book Ancient Mosaic Pavements

Download or read book Ancient Mosaic Pavements written by Rāḥēl Ḥaḵlîlî and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is engaged in issues, trends, and themes depicted on mosaic pavements discovered in Israel, the Gaza Strip and Petra (the provinces of ancient Palaestina Prima, Secunda and Tertia) with comparable floors in Jordan (Arabia). The majority of the mosaic pavements discussed in this study are dated to the 4th-8th centuries CE. Mosaic pavements were the normal medium for decorating the floors of synagogues, churches, monasteries, and chapels, as well as public and private buildings. Inscriptions found on many of the pavements commemorate the donors, refer to the artists, and sometimes date the mosaics. The ornamentation of the mosaics in this region is remarkable, rich, and varied in its themes and provides many insights into the contemporary artistic and social cultures.

Book excerpt: "Optimally, the flare is twice as long, or more, than the distance to the target. This ensures that the target suffers the full power of the flare. The first effect of the flare will be an enormous EMP - electromagnetic pulse - that will destroy all electronic devices that have any kind of power still in them, stopping any way of getting out of the flare's path, or shielding any part of the target. Even starships are not able to shield from an EMP of this size. And even if they could, the heat would still be like skimming the surface of the sun. "The planet's surface is immediately burned up by the flare's heat. All the water down to two full kilometers underground will flash to steam in a millimin, causing a huge amount of pressure for an instant. That rush of pressure will carry almost all of the planet's air out into space. "What life on the planet that may not be burned will be squeezed by the pressure and then boiled by the super-heated steam. If anything could possibly live through that sequence, the vacuum left by the atmosphere being blown into space, along with what air might possibly remain being filled with water vapor and ash, will complete the goal of wiping out all life on that planet. The ash cloud will be so thick that no light will get through it, leaving the planet a bare and frozen rock. Nothing living could possibly survive for even a decamin under such conditions!"

Book Charting the Emerging Field of Japanese Diaspora Archaeology

Download or read book Charting the Emerging Field of Japanese Diaspora Archaeology written by Douglas E. Ross and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-29 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Japanese diaspora from the historical archaeology perspective—drawing from archaeological data, archival research, and often oral history—and explores current trends in archaeological scholarship while also looking at new methodological and theoretical directions. The chapters include research on pre-War rural labor camps or villages in the US, as well as research on western Canada (British Columbia), Peru, and the Pacific Islands (Hawai‘i and Tinian), incorporating work on understudied urban and cemetery sites. One of the main themes explored in the book is patterns of cultural persistence and change, whether couched in terms of maintenance of tradition, “Americanization,” or the formation of dual identities. Other themes emerging from these chapters include consumption, agency, stylistic analysis, community lifecycles, social networks, diaspora and transnationalism, gender, and sexuality. Also included are discussions of trauma, racialization, displacement, labor, heritage, and community engagement. Some are presented as fully formed interpretive frameworks with substantial supporting data, while others are works in progress or tentative attempts to push the boundaries of our field into innovative new territory. This book is of interest to students and researchers in historical archaeology, anthropology, sociology of migration, diaspora studies and historiography. Previously published in International Journal of Historical Archaeology Volume 25, issue 3, September 2021

Book excerpt: This book examines Hinduism from both a historical and contemporary perspective. It provides some interesting insights into factors that shaped and defined Hinduism in the diaspora. It also examines the challenges facing Hinduism in the twenty-first century. In recent years the growing conversions of Hindus to other religions, the complexities of caste, the impact of AIDS, and the need to reinvigorate the youth in Hindu teachings are just some of the issues that it faces. What shape and form will Hinduism take in the twenty-first century? What will Hinduism look like in the future? These relevant questions are the subject of debate and deliberations amongst religious scholars, academics and politicians. This edited collection addresses some of these questions as well as the relationship between religion and diaspora within historical and contemporary perspectives.

Book Ancient Synagogues Archaeology and Art New Discoveries and Current Research

Download or read book Ancient Synagogues Archaeology and Art New Discoveries and Current Research written by Rachel Hachlili and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Synagogues - Archaeology and Art. New Discoveries and Current Research presents archaeological evidence - the architecture, art, Jewish symbols, zodiac, biblical tales, inscriptions, and coins – which attest to the importance of the synagogue. When considered as a whole, all these pieces of evidence confirm the centrality of the synagogue institution in the life of the Jewish communities all through Israel and in the Diaspora. Most importantly, the synagogue and its art and architecture played a powerful role in the preservation of the fundamental beliefs, customs, and traditions of the Jewish people following the destruction of the Second Temple and the loss of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel. The book also includes a supplement of the report on the Qazion excavation.

Book New Immigration Destinations

Download or read book New Immigration Destinations written by Ruth McAreavey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current population movements involve both established and new destinations, often encompassing marginal and rural communities and resulting in a whole new set of issues for these communities. New Immigration Destinations examines structural forces and individual strategies and behaviour to highlight the opportunities and challenges for ‘new’ destination areas arising from new economic and cultural mobility. Representing a "second wave" in studies of in-migration, this volume examines patterns in "non-traditional" rural and peripheral migration destinations, with a particular case study on Northern Ireland. Indeed, focusing mainly on events in the host society, this book shows how processes of migrant incorporation are complex and rely on multifarious influences including the state, community, individuals and families. Accordingly, the book develops of migration and social integration within rural/peripheral destinations. This subsequently provides clarification of many of the contested concepts including transnationalism; integration, acculturation and assimilation; ‘new’ destinations; and migrants and ethnic minorities. Focusing on the local and the micro with a strong sense of research, social and policy reality, this timely volume critically engages with original theories of migration, thus providing a much fuller conceptual and theoretical understanding that is required in the emerging field of migration studies within a rapidly changing and uncertain world. This book’s interdisciplinary nature will appeal to policymakers, scholars, and both undergraduate and postgraduate students in a range of disciplines including Sociology (Race and Ethnic Studies), Human Geography (Migration, Demography), Political Economy and Community Development.

Book The Demographic Dividend and the Power of Youth

Download or read book The Demographic Dividend and the Power of Youth written by Eirliani Abdul Rahman and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As fertility rates decrease, a country’s working-age population grows larger relative to the young dependent population. With more people in the labor force and fewer children to support, a country has a window of opportunity for rapid economic growth if the right social and economic investments and policies are made in health, education, governance and the economy. Conversely, research shows that resource requirements to support a large population of children and youth can depress the pace of economic growth and prevent needed investments in human capital. The discourse on responding to this population growth frequently excludes the youth. The result can be an apathetic community of young people who withdraw from participation in political and democratic processes. The book is a compilation of articles that address the issue and highlight solutions from different parts of the world, from members of the Global Diplomacy Lab to external contributors: how they see their work promoting, enhancing and contributing to harvesting the demographic dividend.
