Book excerpt: The present "Literature Qf Java, Catalogue Raisonne Qf Javanese Manuscripts" is a publicatiQn of the Library Qf the University Qf Leiden. It is no. Juynboll's "Supplement Dp "den CatalQgus van de J avaansche en Madoereesche Handschriften der Leidsche "Universiteits-BibliQtheek" in two volumes. The second volume appeared in 1911. It soon became clear, hQwever, that this was the Dpportunity tOo publish an English Catalogue which could be used as an introductiDn to the study Qf Javanese literature mOore easily than the previQus Dutch catalQgues eQuId. It is a matter Qf fact that Dr Juynboll and his predecessors wrQte their catalogues with the intentiDn of prQviding infDrmatiDn on Javanese literature in general, and fDr several decades their books did render excellent services tOo students Qf Javanese civilizatiQn. The differences in structure between the older catalogues and the present bDOk will be explained in the introduction to the second vQlume. In two vDlumes the contents of the previDus catalQgues, increased by an equal quantity Qof new material, has been rearranged according tOo a new system. The third volume, cDntaining illustrations, facsimiles Df manuscripts, maps and a general index Df names and subjects, is entirely new.

Book Writing the Past Inscribing the Future

Download or read book Writing the Past Inscribing the Future written by Nancy K. Florida and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located at the juncture of literature, history, and anthropology, Writing the Past, Inscribing the Future charts a strategy of how one might read a traditional text of non-Western historical literature in order to generate, with it, an opening for the future. This book does so by taking seriously a haunting work of historical prophecy inscribed in the nineteenth century by a royal Javanese exile--working through this writing of a colonized past to suggest the reconfiguration of the postcolonial future that this history itself apparently intends. After introducing the colonial and postcolonial orientalist projects that would fix the meaning of traditional writing in Java, Nancy K. Florida provides a nuanced translation of this particular traditional history, a history composed in poetry as the dream of a mysterious exile. She then undertakes a richly textured reading of the poem that discloses how it manages to escape the fixing of "tradition." Adopting a dialogic strategy of reading, Florida writes to extend--as the work's Javanese author demands--this history's prophetic potential into a more global register. Babad Jaka Tingkir, the historical prophecy that Writing the Past, Inscribing the Future translates and reads, is uniquely suited for such a study. Composing an engaging history of the emergence of Islamic power in central Java around the turn of the sixteenth century, Babad Jaka Tingkir was written from the vantage of colonial exile to contest the more dominant dynastic historical traditions of nineteenth-century court literature. Florida reveals how this history's episodic form and focus on characters at the margins of the social order work to disrupt the genealogical claims of conventional royal historiography--thus prophetically to open the possibility of an alternative future.

Book excerpt: At the completion of this critical bibliography which forms another step in the direction of the realization of the bibliographical project inaugurated in 1955 by Dr. Voorhoeve's survey of the languages of Sumatra, I acknowledge with gratitude the valuable assistance received from various people. I am indebted to my colleagues Prof. Dr. G. W. J. Drewes, Dr. J. Noorduyn, Dr. Th. Pigeaud, Prof. Dr. A. Teeuw and Dr. P. Book excerpt: A tight interaction of melodic, rhythmic and textural components sustains the powerful orchestral gamelan music of Bali. The building blocks of the music share many traits with the larger social organization of Balinese villages, which provide a compelling setting for music that is an integral part of daily life. The primary function of music in Bali is to accompany ritual activity, but it is performed in many recreational contexts also. The instruments, most often made from bronze or bamboo, are organized into ensembles and tuned according to a set of flexibly interpreted standards. Villages may maintain one or several types of gamelan and use each for a ritually predetermined set of occasions. Music is composed, memorized, and rehearsed at the village meeting hall. When a gamelan accompanies dancers, as it often does, the close connections between movement and sound are brought to life through a complex system of interactive cues and responses. Performance standards are very high, and even with Bali's current and rapidly expanding connection to the rest of the world, gamelan music remains almost wholly unaffected by outside influences. The tradition is still learned and developed with vigor, and it has found an increasingly broad international audience.

Book excerpt: Mangkunagara I (1726-95) was one of the most flamboyant figures of 18th-century Java. A charismatic rebel from 1740 to 1757 and one of the foremost military commanders of his age, he won the loyalty of many followers. He was also a devout Muslim of the Mystic Synthesis style, a devotee of Javanese culture and a lover of beautiful women and Dutch gin. His enemies—the Surakarta court, his uncle the rebel and later Sultan Mangkubumi of Yogyakarta and the Dutch East India Company—were unable to subdue him, even when they united against him. In 1757 he settled as a semi-independent prince in Surakarta, pursuing his objective of as much independence as possible by means other than war, a frustrating time for a man who was a fighter to his fingertips. Professor Ricklefs here employs an extraordinary range of sources in Dutch and Javanese—among them Mangkunagara I’s voluminous autobiographical account of his years at war, the earliest autobiography in Javanese so far known—to bring this important figure to life. As he does so, our understanding of Java’s devastating civil war of the mid-18th century is transformed and much light is shed on Islam and culture in Java.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether warlike or not, the peoples of South-east Asia have traditionally devoted a great deal of time each year to warlike undertakings. The emotions of war being so different from those of peace, it may be expected that a study of South-east Asian warfare will reveal aspects of national character and of civilization different from, and sometimes deeper than, those which find expression in the better known exercises and arts of peace. Such a study should help to broaden our understanding of the peoples of South-east Asia and their problems through a fuller knowledge of their cultural background. exercises and arts of peace. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book completes a series of three volumes cataloguing the Javanese-language manuscripts housed in four repositories in the Central Javanese city of Surakarta that were preserved in microfilm under the auspices of the Cornell University's Surakarta Manuscript Project. The present volume describes the manuscripts of the Radya Pustaka Museum and the private library of the late Panembahan Hardjonagoro, a body of materials that date from the early eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Detailing the contents of the 1,204 texts inscribed in these 478 manuscripts, Nancy K. Florida's fully-indexed catalogue guides the reader through a wide range of materials. The manuscripts catalogued include autobiographical writings; gamelan notation; works of calendrical divination; annotated translations of the Qur’an; compendia of colonial laws and regulations; Sufi poetry; royal genealogies; handbooks on horsemanship; histories of legendary heroes; and scripts for wayang performances. Each entry includes information of titles, authors, dates and places of composition, dates and places of inscription, identities of scribes and patrons, and concise descriptions of the contents. Each title is also provided with a subject categorization, along with notes on the physical size and condition of the original manuscript, descriptions of scripts and scribal styles, papers, and watermarks. It is an essential resource for researchers of Javanese history and culture.

Book Traces of the Ramayana and Mahabharata in Javanese and Malay Literature

Download or read book Traces of the Ramayana and Mahabharata in Javanese and Malay Literature written by Ding Choo Ming and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local renderings of the two Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata in Malay and Javanese literature have existed since around the ninth and tenth centuries. In the following centuries new versions were created alongside the old ones, and these opened up interesting new directions. They questioned the views of previous versions and laid different accents, in a continuous process of modernization and adaptation, successfully satisfying the curiosity of their audiences for more than a thousand years. Much of this history is still unclear. For a long time, scholarly research made little progress, due to its preoccupation with problems of origin. The present volume, going beyond identifying sources, analyses the socio-literary contexts and ideological foundations of seemingly similar contents and concepts in different periods; it examines the literary functions of borrowing and intertextual referencing, and calls upon the visual arts to illustrate the independent character of the epic tradition in Southeast Asia.
