Book excerpt: There have been numerous books and periodicals written about Meteor Crater, the meteorites, and the crater’s scientific value, but this book, with supporting images, is more about people. The story covers some history of the crater’s founding and the many people who have been, and presently are, associated with the custody and maintenance of the site, preserving it for future scientific study and generations of visitors. These people include geologists, astrophysicists, astronauts, generations of families named Barringer and Tremaine, and local ranchers named Chilson-Prosser. All have, and continue to, influence and shape what the site has become, each adding their signature to the famous landmark. Today, these families, supported by Meteor Crater Enterprises management and staff of dedicated people, continue the legacy of sharing the history and science with 250,000 annual visitors from around the globe while they continue to focus on preserving the scientific integrity of the crater for future generations.

Book Impact Cratering

  • Author : G. R. Osinski
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2012-12-26
  • ISBN : 140519829X
  • Pages : 362 pages

Download or read book Impact Cratering written by G. R. Osinski and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-26 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impact cratering is arguably the most ubiquitous geological process in the Solar System. It has played an important role in Earth’s history, shaping the geological landscape, affecting the evolution of life, and generating economic resources. However, it was only in the latter half of the 20th century that the importance of impact cratering as a geological process was recognized and only during the past couple of decades that the study of meteorite impact structures has moved into the mainstream. This book seeks to fill a critical gap in the literature by providing an overview text covering broad aspects of the impact cratering process and aimed at graduate students, professionals and researchers alike. It introduces readers to the threat and nature of impactors, the impact cratering process, the products, and the effects – both destructive and beneficial. A series of chapters on the various techniques used to study impact craters provide a foundation for anyone studying impact craters for the first time.

Book Impact Craters in South America

Download or read book Impact Craters in South America written by Rogelio Daniel Acevedo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-25 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete and updated catalogue of impact craters and structures in South America from 2014 is presented here. Approximately eighty proven, suspected and disproven structures have been identified by several sources in this continent. All the impact sites of this large continent have been exhaustively reviewed: the proved ones, the possible ones and some very doubtful. Many sites remain without a clear geological "in situ" confirmation and some of them could be even rejected. Argentina and Brazil are leading the list containing almost everything detected. In Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guyana, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay and Venezuela only a few were observed. Only Ecuador is waiting for new discoveries. So far, the largest well stated impact site is still the Araguainha structure in Brazil with its 40 kilometers in diameter. However, two possible impact structures are larger than Araguainha: Malvinas, (with 250 kilometers in diameter) and Vichada in Colombia, (50 kilometers). This study also reports the existence of some Tertiary-Quaternary glassy impactite layers: the "escorias" and "tierras cocidas" of the pampas in Argentina.

Book Fire from the Heavens

  • Publisher : Xulon Press
  • Release : 2018-06-20
  • ISBN : 9781545635292
  • Pages : 124 pages

Download or read book Fire from the Heavens written by Eugene L. Maxwell and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meteor Crater is located about thirty miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona and is the youngest (about 50,000 years) and best-known meteorite impact crater in North America. Today we know that fiery objects from the heavens (asteroids and meteoroids) form such craters when they impact Earth at high velocity. Revelation 13:13 refers to "miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to Earth in full view of men." Given that the biblical scribes saw such fiery phenomena, why is the Bible silent about the formation of impact craters? This book suggests an answer to that question.
